Seeing as I haven?t done so before, I feel it is high time I make a list of my top five all-time favorite games and why I like them.

#1. Halo 3: As if those of you who know me couldn?t have guessed this. Halo 3 neatly tied up every significant loose end in the primary story arc in a satisfying and believable way. This in conjunction with some of the best multi-approach set piece battles I?ve played put the game?s single player squarely in my top 3. As for what cements the game at position 1, look no further than the multiplayer.
Halo 3?s multiplayer is very well balanced, yet still fast and fun. Yes the shotgun feels a mite anemic and yes vehicles did get out of hand at times, but not much is quite as satisfying as pulling of a perfect four shot with the BR or Lasering a scorpion from the back of a mongoose.

#2. Battlefield Bad Company 2: The story may not be much to sneeze at, but if you?re playing this game for its story, you need your head examined. Bad Company 2 is a multiplayer game through and through. Featuring a deep progression system and one of the most balanced and realistic experiences on the market, it truly boggles my mind that Call of Duty sold better.

#3. Mass Effect 2: For those of you who have not played any of the Mass Effect series, shame on you. I was once one of the unenlightened haters, but upon playing the first Mass Effect, I was hooked. Yes the combat was mediocre at best. Yes the inventory screen was cluttered and obnoxious and yes the vehicle sections were so bad that they caused brain hemorrhages, but I didn?t care. The Story and characters were simply that good.
Mass Effect 2 Took mass Effect 1 and improved just about everything. Combat was upgraded to the point that it nearly rivaled Halo?s, the inventory system was totally overhauled and the vehicle sections are far less nightmarish. The only complaint I can level at the game (other than planet scanning) is that they seemed to cut back on character development by about 15-20%. Granted, this meant they developed more characters, but I?d prefer deeper, more nuanced squaddies.

#4. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: I really can?t put my finger on what makes this game so amazing. Between puzzles and combat, the game never outpaces itself and you can travel a huge area from the word ?go?.

#5. Age of Mythology: Much like Ocarina of Time, I have a tough time pinpointing just one thing about this game that I love. So precious little is wrong with it that I really can?t think of anything bad to say. Well, I guess the campaign is a mite lengthy, but when has that been a bad thing? The standard RTS ?rock, paper, scissors game of infantry beats cavalry beats archers beat infantry is shaken up by the additions of god powers, heroes and myth units, and each civilization is distinct from the others.

You have a very varied list of games there.

My list (this is going to be hard)...
1) Saints Row (the series)- The best sandbox games of all time. Great story. Amazing game play.
2) The Megaman Battlenet series- hard to classify it in a genre. Still really good games.
3) Oblivion- 'Nuff said.
4) Fallout 3/ New Vegas- Both really great games.
5) I want to say Call of Duty 2- the game that started it all of on the 360. Amazing game.

... My 3 and 4 might as well be the same game

I can't do a top 5 of ALL time, that'd be way too hard to do. So I'll do my Top Five games that really got to me, so I guess good story. I have a rule, only one per franchise and preferably one per developer

5. Braid
Shame that most of the story was through text, but the final game sequence was more satisfying than ten boss battles.

4. Half Life 2
Simply playing the first fifteen minutes of this game is a huge treat. Going around talking to citizens, getting pushed around by cops. THE best intro sequence to any game ever.

3. Pheonix Wright: Ace Attorney
More of an interactive manga than a game but still really funny dialogue. The characters are all memorable and fun with the funniest breakdown reactions I've ever seen.

2. Fallout 3
Ironically, I found the sidequests to have a more interesting story than with the main story. Hell, not even a sidequest, sometimes I'd just find a random place or meet an interesting character that would just make my day. One of the few games that proves that non-linear games can have advantages over linear games.

1. Mother 3/Earthbound 2
Out, fucking, standing. To be honest as far as every game I've ever played goes, this is the best of all. I go back and play it every now and again, it's like reading a good book. The characters, the atmosphere, the story, the dialogue, the unique fighting mechanic. Everything was fantastic. It's just a shame so few people can get ahold of it, but if you can I very much suggest you play it.

1 Civilization Series
2 Batman Arkham Asylum (Probably series)
3 Uncharted Series
4 Arcanum
5 Mass Effect Series

Wow, that was actually hard. I have many more that deserve to be on this list but this is all based off of how likely I am to put in the disc and play at any given time.

Pfft, Halo 3. The campaign was as unexciting as it was pointless, and the multiplayer was good, but loses replay value quickly. By Halo 3, the series had lost it's Haloness - it lost the point of the original Halo

1) Halo: CE - the game was an original shooter with what was almost a survival horror element to it - the flood was an awesome shock in the story, the whole concept was brilliantly done, and the game was just awesome from start to finish - the fights in Two Betrayals were awesome; four separate armies all fighting each other. Incredible. And the warthog scene at the end was the best way you could have finished such a game.

2) Mass Effect 2 - taking everything that made Mass Effect 1 good, and making it twice as good, and you have Mass Effect 2. With an expansive world, lots and lots of opportunities, believable characters, and an immersive story, with great moral choice system & dialog.

3) Assassins Creed 2 - again, taking the first game and making it twice as good, AC2 introduced a believable, interesting story, again with opportunities and an expansive world. And focussing a lot more on the actual assassinations, making them more varied and more interesting, and introducing stealth elements.

4) Portal 2 - while the original game focussed on the puzzles, and was nothing short of amazing, Portal 2 added a story to the game, and it did it brilliantly. It incorporated the story as the main point, but the puzzles were not at all sacrificed, the humour was not lessened, and the characters were great. With a whole lot of extra set pieces, and the story elements coinciding with the puzzle difficulty, Portal 2 is better than the original - it's like the original puzzles, with more variety, and an awesome story. It's just better in almost (almost...) every way. And the co-op is the most fun i've had in multiplayer for a long time

5) Modern Warfare 2 - assuming we're only talking about single player, MW2 had a brilliantly written story with great characters and an awesome concept. What I love is that it's set in modern times, and as such is very relatable - on that topic, MW2 is one of the only games which makes you feel sympathy and empathy for the characters. An emotional war game. The story portrays concepts of militant minds, betrayal, the philosophies of war, political motivations for military intervention, and being part of a squad of marines with whom you must bond with as brothers. And it makes you feel that bond - you don't want your characters to die because you like them. Another thing it does awesomely is switch between characters, and fighting styles - the stark contrast from US full-frontal assault, to extremely tense British stealth-based missions, MW2 is another game which is nothing short of amazing. Multiplayer is the most fun online multiplayer game I've ever played. Ever.

I wanted to put Crysis 2 on here, but the other 5 are better. A lot of sequels, too...

#5. Age of Mythology
It's nice to see this game get some mention. I can't quite put my finger on why I like it so much, but for some reason it's possibly my favourite RTS out there (and I'm not a big RTS player). I always found the background music in this game incredibly soothing, as well as the mythology contributing to a much more interesting and unique experience. The game is also simple enough to learn quickly, yet has enough depth not to easily become boring.

Personally though, I don't think I would ever be capable of putting together a top 5 list. I might be able to put together a list of my "Top Games" but I most likely wouldn't be able to number it, and it'd probably be around 30 games long :p! What can I say? I'm indecisive!

Cheers!

My Top 5/Top 10 change depending on what day you ask me it (both in ordering and content), because I nearly always forget "that one" game that was totally awesome but I'll give it a go with games that will nearly always be in there.

In no order:

-Shenmue 2
-Baldur's Gate 2
-FFVII/VIII/IX (this is one choice, dammit)
-Sonic 3 & Knuckles
-Advance Wars

Too hard - honorable mentions go to Civ 2, C&C Red Alert, Age of Kings, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Super Meat Boy, Halo 1, Perfect Dark... ehh this list could go on forever.

I always preferred Age of Empires 2, but if there's one RTS I want remade it's AoM - I'd lap that up so hard. Go go Norse!

See, I know Reach's multiplayer was maybe more complete, and I know Halo 2s was more important, but damn if I didn't have more fun with Halo 3 than anything else.

There is no excuse not to play this, given that you can emulate it in about 5 minutes.

1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - I can't explain. I'd always liked Metal Gear, but I never really classified myself as a 'Metal Gear Fan' until I played Snake Eater. I'm trying and I can't find a single flaw to pick on. The graphics were fantastic, the gameplay and mechanics are the best of the series and the story and connetations are second to none.

2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Of all of the Zelda titles A Link to the Past is the one I identify with the most. It feels the biggest our of the lot and to this day I'd choose it over any other Zelda title.

3. The Witcher - Possibly my favourite PC RPG of all time, just narrowly beating Ultima 7: The Black Gate.

4. Resident Evil 2 - I feel this was the peak of the series. Refined enough after the original series and before Leon Kennedy became Dante.

5. Valkyria Chronicles - If there's a JRPG that's exceeded my expectations and managed to endear me to both its characters and story it's Valkyria Chronicles. Plus the art style is gorgeous and the music is incredible.

I'm not one for RTS, but if I had a favourite it would be Age of Mythology. There's something about the game that always drew me in, perhaps my love of Greek Mythology helped. The campaign was fantastic by RTS standards, I even went on to use Kastor and Arkantos' relationship in an English essay.

1. Counter-strike (circa 2002-2009ish):
Hmm, interesting. It's hard to explain why this game is so terrific in a few sentences. Well, here's my attempt:

The skill cap in this game is intimidatingly high (and not because of twitchy aim, as most people assume), but has a ladder that is possible to climb, and as such offers such amazing amounts of re-playability there are still tens of thousands of people playing it actively.

Steam's Statistics for today:
27,240 65,469 Counter-Strike
24,755 66,373 Counter-Strike: Source
12,920 35,524 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer
11,880 23,342 Terraria
11,319 30,695 Football Manager 2011
10,748 27,362 Call of Duty Black Ops - Multiplayer
8,876 16,030 Team Fortress 2
7,675 15,738 Sid Meier's Civilization V
5,302 11,191 Left 4 Dead 2

The mechanics in the game are simply perfect for a 5 on 5 multiplayer FPS.

2. World of Warcraft
I was thinking about this the other day. I got sick of this game and quit a few months ago. The combat mechanics are fluid, vast/useful, and unique between 10 different classes.

So many good things to say; expansive, interesting, unique areas.

Mostly though, this is one of those games where you get a drug-like buzz from completing objectives and advancing your character.

3. Guitar Hero
This game, I think, is mostly a personal favorite. For whatever reason, the satisfaction from successfully playing a difficult, beautiful song is one of the best video game experiences of my life.

Actually, it's kind of like smoking. Really good buzz the first time, and a decent buzz if you only do it once a day. Eventually it gets to be just something you do, which is why I don't rank it higher.

4. Portal
The first time I tried to play portal 1 I got bored with all the tutorial levels and quit the game.

After I played Portal 2 (which had less of a shitty introduction to the game mechanics) I played it again and was satisfied beyond my expectations when I completed all the puzzles later in the game.

5. Half-Life 2
This is one of the few games that I've played start to finish the very first time I played it. Just a great, immersive story with interesting characters.

1. Portal
2. Portal 2
3. Mass Effect 2
4. Dragon Age: Origins
5. World of Warcraft

As you can see, I'm somewhat of a Valve and Bioware fan. I adore RPGs and overall 'brainy' games. Currently I'm playing Witcher 2 but it's too early to tell if it'll replace WoW on that list. I played the game semi-hardcore for 4 years after all.

1. Homeworld

Brilliant in every respect, and so unique and far ahead of its time it's barely aged in the 12 years it's existed. It's a shame it doesn't like being defocused (and my comp randomly defocuses stuff due to me apparently "not running genuine windows", which confuses me since I'm pretty sure I am), and thus I can't really play it on my comp.

2. *picks one from the series* Halo 3 - pretty much the same reasons as you, LTA. If I'd finished Halo CE, I suspect it'd be here instead,, but I haven't so it's disqualified (sadly - the 2/3rds I've done were undoubted classic material).

3. Mass Effect, both - They both occupy the same space, because I like them both equally. First one had a brilliant story, built a really interesting sci-fi universe and had vehicle sections so awesome they gave you brain haemmorhages (shut up). Second one had better and more characters, improved combat mechanics and was nicer to look at. Go space opera!

4. Metroid Fusion - Brilliant sidescrolling shooter, with a great story, nice puzzles, very memorable boss battles and some interesting hidden areas (which I still don't know the half of). Also, the music is the best thing ever to come out of the GBA's tinny speakers.

5. Hmm. *looks at rather pathetic game library* Umm... Bad Company 2: Vietnam, to fill the multiplayer slot. Had so much fun being a medic in a squad with friends.

Honourable mention: Half-Life 2 + All Muse playlist. The G-man ending becomes so much more awesome with the classical bit of United States of Eurasia playing in the background (which fits so well in a dissonant way).

thought for the day: USAPal project.

1. Final Fantasy IV - favorite RPG
2. Persona 3/4, I can't decide which to put above the other. - close second
3. Golden Sun: The Lost Age - pretty sure it's the first RPG I ever beat
4. Halo 2 - probably the game that really got me into shooters
5. Legend of Dragoon - likely the first RPG I ever played, though it's hard to remember that far back.
