I know you've play your share of X-Com but if you haven't given The Long War mod a shot I'd try it. Doesn't work for me so I can't speak from experience but I've watched some videos and it's basically just a longer-term X-Com with steamroll tactics coming into play less.

Weeeeell... I have played JA2. If by played you mean installed the program and started a new game.

Played through? That's another matter altogether.

I'm afraid it was just too, well, old. Along with everything else that implies.

YOU'RE old!

Did you download the 1.13 mod/patch to get higher resolutions?

I might hasten to point out that Valkyria Chronicles is no spring chicken itself.

Okay, it's not a strategy game, it's an RPG, but Shadowrun: Returns plays a lot like XCOM: Enemy Unknown and it's really good. I recommend it, especially Dragonfall which is now available as a stand-alone expansion. The base game isn't bad but Dragonfall is much better.

Expeditions: Conquistador

Great little game with a very refreshing setting (Spanish exploration of America). Some surprisingly good writing as well, and a fantastic presentation with well drawn artwork. Can get pretty challenging in some places as well, but never ridiculously so.

This War of Mine - not exactly turn based, but kind of similar.

Good stuff there.

Valkyria Chronicles is for all intents and purposes X-COM, but with a story and characters. And squinting ain't gonna help you, that thick anime cheese will force its way though every orifice.
Ye gods. I should have listened.

I should have listened.

It's so anime that it hurts. There's strange little reaction noises in the dialogue, a very very very adopted sister, some chick who's one stray baka away from being a full blown tsundre and... and everything.

I have a high tolerance for this kind of stuff and even I quite after a certain point. I've seen some of the most cheesy anime that wasn't as "anime" as Valkyria Chronicles.

Combat Mission 2: Barbarossa To Berlin and Combat Mission: Afrika Korps[i/] are a pair of fairly ancient but utterly brilliant WW2 turn based tactical games. Insanely complicated but utterly brilliant and between them and the European Theatre of Operations mod for CM:AK they cover almost every theatre and major battle from the Normandy hedgerows to the suburbs of Moscow, with Italy and North Africa to round out the offerings.

There were later additions to the series which focused on "near future" warfare, but the WW2 games were always my favourites.

Looking for recommendations of turn-based strategy games.

Preferably something of the squad-level XCOM-ish variety.

Will also consider 'grand strategy' type games, so long as they're not too mired in economics.

I notice that Valkyria Chronicles has appeared on Steam, is that any good? (Assuming I can sorta squint and ignore the anime stylings.)
You're hearing everyone say Valkyria, let me add my name to that chorus. SO WORTH IT.

What about the Banner Saga? I've never played it personally, but I've seen some gameplay footage, and it appeared to be XCOM-like in it's combat scenarios.
Good, but extremely easy to exploit to the point you have to do it to survive later in the game. Once someone takes enough damage, they stop doing damage, killing them just gives the bigger guys more free turns, so you have to let an annoyance stay alive so that you can actually fight without having your guy have one turn while one of their's gets to move six times to your own characters only getting to move once.
I recently started play BS and I never thought of this "cheating". Good to know it is useful to be a dirty player.

mainly it jsut has alot that other games do not.

I also highly recommend banner saga if you've yet to play it.

ive got those and yeah dragonfall was better in my opinion.
great story, far less linear than the base game, extremely well written and unique companions (telltale quality) and an interesting hub area you are based in

If you can go back, I would recommend the Front Mission Series. Try to avoid Front Mission: Evolved though.

It has Mechs, upgrading characters to fit specific roles, and very little economy.

Battle for Wesnoth. The graphics are very 1995, but the AI is quite clever and the campaigns are challenging.

Fun fact, Zhukov's avatar is from there. Some artwork that was in Battle of Wesnoth at one point in time (I don't think it is any more, though). I think it's actually artwork he, himself, submitted to the game.

I think I remember him mentioning this at least once.
