please leave me your thoughts and I have one request of yall. Is there anymore anime like this that is mature in theme and does not falter into normal anime shit halfway through? If so please recommend me some seeing how I have an completely different view on anime now.
chapters.

Elfin Lied was decent, though I hated the English voice acting, they just seemed flat and dead. I prefer to watch subbed anime mainly because English voice acting is so hit or miss.

If your looking for something with depth and good story check out stuff like:

Serial Experiment Lain
Ergo Proxy
Hiabane Renmei
Paranoia agent(or anything by Satoshi Kon)

Oh, and Eve no Jikan and Pale Cocoon too.

If your looking for something as bloody as Elfin Lied with a little fun added:

Hellsing (or Hellsing Ultimate)
High school of the Dead
When they Cry.

A few tips for finding a good anime that suits your taste would be first learn the genres and find a decent review site. Them anime reviews is decent, but lacks a good search function. Second, don't watch anything over 12 to 24 episodes unless you know its good. Third, don't bother watching an anime trailer, check out the opening of the anime on something like youtube instead (do a search for Gunslinger girls op there, that's a good one too).

My first anime was Naruto... I though it was cool back then.

Elfen Lied was pretty meh. It's the same boring crazy emotionally unstable teenagers with daddy issues and superpowers. Then throw in amnesia and multiple personality disturbances for added crazy, and tons of sociopathy by pretty much every character in the story. It's like the perfect recipe for pointless blood and gore.
I really dont think it was about daddy issues. I Believe it was merely about wanting to be human and wanting to be accepted and having a normal life instead of the horrors that the diclonis went through.

Did not have work in the past 2 days so I sat down got cozy and watched as much after story as possible.

Holy shit. I am up to episode 18 but I feel like im about to go into a chronic depression..
*spoilers* I could barely get past nagisa dieing
but that scene in the flower field....I dont think I can even make it past to the next episode. This story feels like it ripping my soul in half, stomping on its remains and spitting on it. I dont think ive ever cared so much about these characters (outside Lucy) before than now.

I will finish the rest tomorrow or the next day but christ I hope the ending is not so depressing.

Rurouni Kenshin was my first Anime and it will for ever be one of my favorites with the Manga being my favorite Manga of all time.

It had an wonderful story, amazing characters that each got to grow over the course of the series, great action, comedy, drama, some horror at times, and even romance and sadness.
And it did it all without resorting to ecchi fanservice.

I love it so much, it has something for almost everyone in it.

Now as for Elifen Lied, its just not for me.
The fanservice was a major thing, it would have a touching moment only to be interrupted by unnecessary and ridiculous fanservice.
I found almost all the Characters to be retarded and hollow, and IMO i saw Lucy nude more than i say her character develop.
It was also Boring, the Gore was interesting but, iv seen it all before and done better.
But i did like the music and i thought the story had potential but i didn't think very much was done with it.
*shrugs*
but that's just my opinion.

And as for recommendations,
Berserk is an excellent Manga that deals with much more mature themes and handles them very well, plus its very Gorey, a plus for me.
Tekkaman Blade is an older series but a amazing one none the less, it is a MAJOR influence on Anime, even today.
Baccano! is also another more mature anime with an wonderful cast and an awesome story, admittedly i haven't seen it all, i really want to finish it.

Elfen Lied never really did much for me. I watched the series with my friend 'cause she had the box set and kept me company while making art. While it does touch on a lot of emotions, I just felt like its too much of a stretch for me to connect with most anime. Admittedly, the pink hair and cat ear-horn things didn't help its case with me.
Of course, it wasn't 'till they slit someone's throat in a bloodstained room in the Ghost Hunt that I realized it was supposed to be a horror anime.
I guess its that in a lot of more violent anime, you see that characters went through traumatic events, and you see that it changed them, but rarely do they actually impart the thought and emotion that goes on in the mind of someone with PTSD, or something like that.
Usually, if a character has an episode, you just see them kneeling down, facing the ground with a blank stare and trembling eyes. Possibly some tears or a description of the events, but the only time characters seem to have mixed or confused emotions is when it serves as a plot point.

I suppose I'm harsh on anime, but I just don't feel ready to lend my empathy to fictional victims if I can see how their trauma is being used so callously by writers these days. And that goes for all media.

Still, that's my problem. If you can ignore somethings' flaws and just enjoy it, then by all means, go ahead. I wish I could enjoy anime...

Just one more thing- while one should treat serious issues with respect (even if fictional), don't overdo it and make your enjoyment of anime some sort of obligation or work.

My first ever anime was the movie Akira. It's quite dated, around the 80's I believe, and I immediately fell in love with anime from there on out. I believe I was about... twelve. And I just got Dish Network with free movies. And I woke up to it at around 3 am. I watched it, was confused as holy hell, then waited for it to come back on and chewed my nails through it.

I will never forget it.

You like Lucy? Right. I just see her as a violent psychopath who needs to be shown no mercy and just be put down for the sake of everyone. Call me crazy, but I don't like psychopaths who like killing people just because. Even if they had a tragic past that started it all.

I'm going to jump on this one and give a stronger warning beyond, "you will either love it hate it," because frankly, it deserves mention.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love Evangelion. I love it even more now than when I first watched it, as I recently had an enlightening experience that allowed me to accept the series' bizarre ending. But there's one fairly big problem with recommending it - it's just too big for its own good.

What I mean by that is that this really is The Big One (tm) when it comes to anime, and as such everyone has a strong opinion on it. This means that it is nearly impossible to watch Evangelion without having some sort of preconceived notions about it, because everyone else has already seen it and is thrusting their views upon you. Compounding this is the fact that the show is anything but what it initially appears to be, and anyone not going in with an open mind and a high degree of attentiveness is just as likely to be confused, disappointed, or angry as they are wowed and amazed.

So, to the OP: if you're going to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion, don't bloody look up anything regarding it until you've at least watched the main series. Watch it, form your own opinion on it, and then go and read everyone elses' rants about it. Whether you ended up loving the series or hating it, you'll be better off.

My first was Pokemon, but I don't recommend that. Since you don't want cuteness...

Calumon: Hiya! Wanna play?

Jack: Sorry Calumon, he doesn't like cute.

Calumon: Awwww... I'll be in the pantry.

Jack: Yeah soo... I recommend Death Note. It's awesome and mature. People hold Elfin Lied higher than Death Note, but Death Note's fanbase is enormous, not to mention the popularity. Why is it so popular if there are better things out there? I may never know this.

Yea if you have a girlfriend whom you have deep affection for or even a friend with romantic intents, definitely sit together and and enjoy it as a couple...your bond will will grow for sure.
I mean hell, it almost makes me want to call my ex because she was in a situation like tomoyo but then I remember she a heartless witch.
Here is a music piece which I regard one of the best of the whole serious.

Personally, I would recommend Fate Stay Night.

Ghost in the Shell is something of a classic. If you're looking for a series rather than a movie, the GitS: Stand Alone Complex is good.

I'm also rather fond of Blue Submarine No. 6. Though I will be the first to tell you that it doesn't feel complete and that a lot of explanation is missing and that the main idea behind the story would be hard pressed to be less subtle.

Ghost in the Shell. Cowboy Bebop. Baccano. You should watch those.

If you want another one, although its a bit on the 'cute' side... "When they cry" or, aka, Higurashi as its known in Japanese. Dont be fooled by the first episode... well... If your not slightly unsettled from the shows opening, and the first 10 seconds... well, thats just a hint of the massive mindrape the show is... IT doesnt take off till after the first episode... and when you finish 4, and reach 5.. well, try to make sense of it. look for clues and patterns. Thats all I can say.

i recommend the original dragon ball series. its just got a certain charm about it that was lost when dragon ball z went for over the top action. even if the narrator thinks differently it never really takes itself too seriously and is always entertaining:)

I'd recommend these two myself;

Saikano - Perhaps the first anime I ever watched and the only one to ever bring me to tears.
I cannot say for certain that if it was because, at the time, I was only thirteen-
but regardless its worth atleast a gander I find.

Canaan - This one was a more recent of mine that I found to be quite intense which made it a most enjoyable experience
for me through out and because of this makes it one of the few i'd ever tell anyone they ought to watch atleast once.

Hmm..An anime to recommend.

Well, I would like to recommend Kanon (2006) anime but that contains cuteness...But it is very good.

If you want over the top action and pure awesomeness(it's a word!)check out Tengen Toppan Gurren Lagan(Might have spelled it wrong.)
