Soul Eater and Full Metal Alchemist. Also, I don't care what your preferences are, watch Angel Beats!

I enjoyed Elfen Lied, although I was disappointed in the ending, and would have preferred to have seen them adapt the entire mange. But my favourite anime is still Code Geass. I think Lelouch is such a great character, and it had some real emotional moments.

Two words, F*ck yeah!

I'm going to rewatch that series next chance I get, everything about it was so strangely awesome.

OT: You will probably like Hellsing Ultimate, it is a mostly gritty/violent anime with awesome action and possibly the most badass vampire ever to exist in fiction .

Wait, I almost made this post without mentioning Cowboy Bebop, HOW COULD I FORGET BEBOP?

Seriously bebop is awesome, go watch it...now!

Animes with mature themes that dont fall into the usual (moe)-scheme of anime?

Baccano (Was already reccomended, wont explain further)

Death Note
The story of an extremly intelligent teenage boy who finds a notebook that kills whoevers name you write into. He decides to use it to kill criminals and make the world a better place. The story mostly revolves around him and a similar intelligent PI and their battle of wits.

Gankutsuou
The old story of the Count of Monte Christo, reinterpreted with a very unique artstyle.

Gungrave
A mafia story that can be best described as a mix of Scarface and Blade.

I would recommend Blood+. I just love how fearless it is. So many characters die in that anime, it's enough to make the 7th Harry Potter book blush.

Also, if you hate cuteness, avoid Azumanga Daioh like the plague! That show's backbone is cuteness.

I think it was Death Note.
A must watch for every anime fans out there.
(I haven't read the manga though...)

I'm kinda mainstream manga/anime fan now anyway xD

*Going to find and watch Elfen lied*

You like Lucy? Right. I just see her as a violent psychopath who needs to be shown no mercy and just be put down for the sake of everyone. Call me crazy, but I don't like psychopaths who like killing people just because. Even if they had a tragic past that started it all.
-.- Obviously you didn't see it.
I did, about three years ago. I don't remember anything about Lucy that made her even the slightest bit likeable. And the irony is that I'm the first one to like a psychopathic character. Cleetus Cassidy, The Joker, Two-Face, any antagonist from Hellsing, Femto from Berserk, Katz from Courage the cowardly dog. I could go on.

I had no idea why I decided to watch Elfen Lied besides, because.

I knew nothing about it when I watched it, but I've watched the Anime/Manga and I liked it.
I'm glad I watched it, the characters were decent, the story was good and the over-the-top gore really tickled my mind.

Should definitely rewatch it.

As for everyone Else's recommendations, I thank ya. I just discovered this form of media and I have to say, there is a a loooooooooot of shows and series to this. I never understood why anime was popular until now.

Death Note is a really good serious anime. It's also, coincidentally, my own "very first love it forever" show.

Cowboy Bebop is really cool, too. It's about a team of mercenaries with terrible secret pasts having fun adventures in space, and it coincidentally has the best soundtrack out of anything ever.

Death note and Cowboy bebop.

I keep getting those two as the highest recommendations (clannad very close though!), are they really that good?

That I remember? I lived in Singapore at the time and I got to watch this ridiculous Chinese Anime named "Cooking Master Boy"

It was subtitled into English on a certain channel and I have no idea why but I was a fucking addict.

It was like all the chef reality TV shows on now but with MAGIC. Awesome times.

I very much recommend Baccano!, although it can be a little confusing sometimes.

The first anime I really fell in love with was Weiss Kreuz (a.k.a. Knight Hunters here in the USA). It's terrible. No, really, it's absolutely AWFUL. The writing is terrible, the animation is shite, but the music and (Japanese) voice acting are where it really shines, and I will forever love it.
