Final update guys.

Got my 360 back today, been playing it and it works fine, although in a final act of ass fisting. It turns out my copy of Lost Odyssey needs resurfacing becuase of? you guessed it, the scratches it took as a result of the old broken 360 DVD drive.

Oh well, at least things are back to normal.

well, the resufacing shouldn't be that hard, if you're really cheap, you can do it with toothpaste, but you have to be careful.

they tend ot work better in colder environments. I moved mine around a couple of times, normally keeping it in a warm room. every once in a whil it would freze/lock up/crash etc. I took it to my dad's house, where I keep it at a nice and cool 58 degrees F. haven't had a problem since. don't have to worry about a/c in the great white north.

Ive used toothpaste before and its worked really well but I did'nt want to do more harm than good, becuase its practically a new game. Whats to lose at this point though.

I hope nightmare_gorilla sees this thread. Just have to say what is the point if your console eats the games you put in? Anyway cheer up you could be this kid:http://hawtymcbloggy.com/2008/02/28/another-gamer-screwed-by-microsoft/

Actually, with everything Microsoft and Bungie sent him in reparation I doubt he's that depressed. Almost makes me want to buy a 360... almost...

a friend of mine has went through eight 360s since the release date, he had one of them less than a month before it got ringed. that happened to 4 others as well, the others were disc scratching problems like the one mentioned above. thankfully, he was within waranty for all of them and he got a new console everytime. the odd thing is he takes WAY better care of his consoles than anyone i know. i guess hes just incredible unlucky. then again, isnt the failure rate at like mid twenties percentage-wise? im stickin' with the my ps3/wii, the 360 was pretty alluring to me right around the time that mass effect was released, but with horror stories like this, im happy that i chose the MGS4 route instead... and that bluRay killed the HDDVD.

I've had this happen twice. My first 360 had drive problems and gouged a nice circular groove right into my Oblivion disc. My second 360 has so far been responsible for gradually cracking my Halo 3 disc into a state of unusability. However I do suspect that it was the fact that the disc was practically grafted to the packaging that cause a small crack on this inside ring in the first place.
