I don't understand it, it was laying horizontally and it just started making a huge racket! I quickly turned Xbox off and looked at the disc, it had a perfect circular scratch around the edge. The really weird thing is that it only does it to my L4D disc and it won't stop doing it!
Has anyone got any ideas of why this happens? (Not technically I know why it happens in that sense just why it does it so randomly)
Aah yes, the Xboxus-disceatius. A rare but extremely infuriating evolution in the console family.

My best guess is that there something wrong with your disc if it's the only one getting damaged.

Yep, 360's like to kill your CDs if you so much as go near it. From moving my brothers while it was on it killed:

Operation Flashpoint
Fable II

On Topic: If your x-box 360 is starting to scratch up your discs it is a good indication that you should pry buy a new one. If you moved it while it was on I have heard that also scratches discs.
It's not that, the discs don't hold in place, because of the dated CD tray. I could throw my PS3 across the room while its on and the disc would be fine :D

I've learned, with having kids, that my PC gaming with mainly digital downloads on Steam solve this problem for me. I play all kinds of games on there, and WoW, which you can just download as well. CDs don't last very long at all once you have young ones running around. One night of forgetting a CD in the computer and it could be ruined forever.

Sorry about the game though bro, that blows.

Yeah It happened to my friends Halo 3 disc when the console was bumped. Off topic I cant think of many games more worthy of getting chewed than left for dead... Maybe dead rising.

Oh no, The consoles are starting to become sentient! First, it is games they eat, next it will be pets, and then people!

I don't think throwing your PlayStation 3 across the room would be the best idea. Yeah, the CD may stay in place but the console would get wrecked.

if you want to avoid these sorts of incidents all together, do what someone else said and install frequently used games on your hard drive. If you don't have a large hard drive, they're worth the investment for this ability alone

I install every game I play. There are several reasons why it's a good idea.. For one, the discs only move when you start up your system, so any sort of movement of your xbox will not result in destroying your discs.. for another, if you get a game with bad sectors, most of the time installing the game can actually bypass some of the bad parts.. Xmen Origins wolverine for instance, playing from the disc, I couldn't see the FMV sequences on the disc I was using. After installing it, I had no trouble. One of the major "Broken 360" bugs is the OTE, or Open Tray Error. It's caused by a misalignment in your dvd drive's laser.. playing from the hard drive limits wear on your DVD drive, allowing your system to remain useable for a lot longer..

Plus, it's a lot quieter, reduces heat in your system (potentially reducing RRoD risks), and probably even lowers power consumption of the machine (although honestly, I can't know that for sure, but logically, it SHOULD).

And all that for a 10 minute investment in the beginning, and 4-8GB on your Hard Drive.

PS2. Ha.

PS2's had a fatal drive error in the first US run. all of my friends, and many other people I've talked to, their First Run PS2s just stopped reading discs after about 2 years.

I've heard it had something to do with running the systems in an vertical position

This has happened to me as well, it messed up my guitar hero 3 disk really badly.

Another time, my Xbox wouldn't give me back the disk. When the tray came out the disk was still lodged somewhere inside my xbox but when I closed the disk-tray the game worked fine. Had to use tape on a nail file to get it out...

I've had this happen before, if you go out and rent it(or borrow it from a friend) you can download it to your Xbox's HDD and then use your scratched disc to play.

It's better than paying another 20$ for a new copy.

Well I have mine horizontal and I still have my launch model working, but perhaps the fact it's a New Zealand one makes a difference?

Damn, I kind of miss the cartridge days when this sort of stuff happens. Sure they were a dead end but no loading and what not... Damn useful.

Yea, they have to make it so you can fix the rrod by just blowing in the slot.

Speaking of that, considering how many people still bought the 360 even though it was having (and in some cases still has) all those problems, I'm betting you next generations consoles are going to rattle, smoke, launch the discs at your head, attack the pets, and make prank phone calls.
BTW. I ate my L4D disc and I can tell you it was delicious, You can't blame the 360; it's hungry.

Truly they were simpler times. I remember doing that anytime it froze and it would work like new again.
Yes.
My NES still works (and it was a launch model: came with the robot); I doubt any of my current consoles will still be chugging in 25 years.

I remember the games I used to play with the year old PS2 fatty. Try it vertical first. Then horizontal. Constantly ejecting the disc hoping that when I put it back in that it would work. After a few hundred tries (give or take depending on the day) I could usually get it going.
