PS2. Ha.

PS2's had a fatal drive error in the first US run. all of my friends, and many other people I've talked to, their First Run PS2s just stopped reading discs after about 2 years.

I've heard it had something to do with running the systems in an vertical position
I remember the games I used to play with the year old PS2 fatty. Try it vertical first. Then horizontal. Constantly ejecting the disc hoping that when I put it back in that it would work. After a few hundred tries (give or take depending on the day) I could usually get it going.
they're not infallible machines, all I was trying to say :p People think of them like these invincible behemoths, and they just weren't. I replaced my PS2 3 times in total, ending with a slim which I still have to this day. That's also the number of 360s I've replaced.. so if this one lasts until whenever the next gen comes out, my anecdotal failrate on the PS2 and the 360 will be the same :p

God bless the PS3, and PS2 for that matter (never had the issue on my PS2 either).
Either you've moved the console which is your own fault or the system is faulty.

Don't drag the PS3 into an Xbox discussion. You're just trying to start something, regardless if it be true or not. The PS3 has its own issues, as did the PS2 (many issues infact).

True, some people take the silly plastic and metal sitting next to their TV way too seriously.

Horror story from my 360 day before it broke and I got denied a warranty by microsoft: I couldn't find my Crackdown disc anywhere. Including the disc tray of my Xbox. I popped Halo 3 in for a quick game, and when it left my 360, it had the same scratch around it. Closer inspection showed that the crackdown disc had literally been eaten by the Xbox, and was resting above the disc tray, jammed.

After I managed to fish the disc out, I popped each back in, to find that Crackdown worked perfectly, and Halo 3 was simply missing one level where you saved Cortana from the zombies. I hated that level anyway. Well that worked for several months, until Halo 3 took a turn for the worse and stopped working at all.

L4D though that is pretty awful. I honestly would rather have it then Halo 3. XD

Yeah it happened to my Gears of War and Rock Band. :(

So unfair, but fair to say, I won't move or touch my 360 when its working.

This happened to my copy of Scene It (it was a present). I was upstairs playing the Wii, then someone shouted at me from downstairs. I came down and they showed me the disc with a neat circle embedded in it. I asked if anyone had done anything and my brother said 'Yeah I moved the 360 on its side while the game was playing' I proceeded to facepalm.

This is why I don't like Microsoft anymore. I haven't had it eat any CDs but I'm always afraid it will.

Yeah that's happened to my mate but my Xbox just keeps scratching the disc every time I put it in, no matter what's happening to the machine at the time.
definitely need a new one. if it starts eating discs, it's not worth keeping...

keep your eyes open for a cheap Arcade
i would have to agree mine was doing that for a while then gave me the evil red ring so i got a better new shiny black one and no problems!!

Plenty of people have chimed in about the PS2, so I figured I'd fill in the gap for the Wii. When SSBB came out, a bunch of people discovered problems with theirs. It was the first dual-layer Wii disc to come out, which is probably why people didn't notice sooner that some Wiis had trouble reading discs. The ones with that particular error got replaced/fixed by Nintendo, at least.

More recently, my Wii's drive has gotten ridiculously noisy, and I'm just waiting for it to die on me. It happens from time to time with any system with a disc drive instead of cartridges; moving parts are generally the most likely thing to fail, just because they get so much extra wear on them. I'm considering modding the stupid thing, not so I can download or copy other people's games or anything, but so I can rip my own games I've bought (since there's no good way to rip Wii games other than with the drive in the Wii) and play them off a USB drive and not have to worry about the impending doom of the disc drive. Either that or get the emulator working on my PC, since it should be fast enough on here.

I loved the slim PS2. Less moving parts meant less can go wrong. The only problem I ever had with my slim was those blasted blue discs (not to be mistaken with blu rays). Although you have made an interesting point. With the failure rate of both the 360 and the PS2 they still sold like mad because of the games. I am on my third 360 but in all fairness the first went with the disc drive and the second was a refurb from GS that lasted for 1 day.
