We are detecting planets orbiting stars trillions of miles away just by watching them wobble. Pretty sure someone would've noticed it.
Other than that- CRIPES! IT'S THE KLINGONS!

That's a violation of the treaty Zachary. You know DAMN well this star system is in the Demilitarized zone! I hope you're Prepared to be censored by the Federation council.
ill make a distraction while we make our escape

It's always gratifying to see people jumping to the most logical conclusion. Good ol' anal-probe enthusiasts, at the forefront of scientific enquiry.

People with degrees in this stuff say it's Mercury. My basic understanding of astronomy/E&M/etc don't see anything too abnormal with this. On the other hand, people with no relevant degrees decide "holy shit it's an alien space ship because there is nothing else this could possibly be".

Guess who I believe.

If extra-terrestrial intelligent life visited the solar system the first things we would notice would be:

A) Tourists
B) Alien equivalent of David Attenborough
C) Worse, Alien equivalent of Darwin stealing random people in a rather obvious fashion and setting up on some random island
D) Total and utter annihilation of the species to harvest the resources of earth/stop us from ever becoming any form of threat.
E) Off world slavery.
F) Colonization.

I do not buy the "Aliens will have our best interests at heart" I mean, did WE ever have the best interests of anyone at heart when we colonized them? No, We went in, shot people, give the survivors diseases and took everything of worth at best, enslaved millions of people to grow shit that we wanted to sell whilst doing all of the above at worst.

Nor do I buy the "Aliens who have the power to travel the cosmos would then proceed to abduct random impressionable farmers/crash into earth for no given reason". Finally, There is no benefit from a ship the size of a planet nor parking said ship near a star (Stars are hot. Very, very hot) so I am inclined to go for what the scientists say over some dude on youtube who, chances are, wears a tinfoil hat.

I mean, Why create a ship the size of a planet? Sure, it can apparently be cloaked but... Space has debris, debris is dangerous. Ship the size of a planet would attract a lot of debris. Ship the size of a planet is a big target so is useless if someone wanted to blow it up. Ship the size of a planet is not covert so useless for studying anything.

Ship the size of a planet would cost so goddam much to build as to be pointless. I mean, look at the Death Star!
Much like the Native American had no concept of the ownership of land until it was forcibly taught to them we have yet to learn the concept of owning out internal organs. Basically if you're attached to having to lungs don't take the bead they offer you no matter how shiny.

On a serious note this is a publicity stunt for the new Prey game. They made a planet sized space ship and parked it off mercury. If you get abducted before launch night you get exclusive DLC...and your spleen harvested.

Scientist who's job it is to analyze said footage says that it's an image of Mercury.
Random YouTuber disagrees and says it's an alien space ship.
People side with YouTuber.
What the fuck?

Alien 1: Okay, explain to me why we chose the planet closest closest to this star to land our spaceship.

Alien 2: Cuz it will be cool!

*Both aliens immediately die of hotness*
Argh, don't mae me read things lie this early morning. I nearly woke up my girlfriend because when reading "Cuz it will be cool!" I"heard" it in the voice of the Martian hologram in Invader Zim...
(Sorry for the filmed-off look, it was the only video of it I could find right now)

But your scenario sounds plausible. After all, we might be taling about a species that keeps abducting people who no sane person would ever believe anything and performing the same experiments every time (Seriously, how interesting can a mammal's anus be that you have to check every last one?). Then again, it might just be their sense of humour...

Actually, I will side with the scientist's explanation. Not just because it was published by a scientist, but also because it sounds far more plausible than a planet-sized cloaed spaceship. Just imagine the power consumption of this thing (unless it's just using a huge "Other People's Problem" field, of course).

1. To the people saying an alien ship would be fried by the sun: Are you fucking stupid? You're talking about an alien ship the size of a planet, and you think you know what hypothetically could or couldn't damage it? Seriously?

2. It's not an alien spaceship the size of a planet. You know why? Because NASA says it isn't, it's their job and look at stuff and figure out if it's an alien or not. It would be awesome if it was, but it's not.

If it was an Alien craft, they got pretty fucking fried.

It was probably space debris(like asteroids) being irradiated by the solar flare.
That is pretty close to my first impression. Maybe one of Mercury's moons got in the way and the flash is the solar flare blowing a cloud of burning irradiated dust off of it.

This is the Mothership. There's no need for alarm, Captain Amaranth of the Phergarble Alpha, the Federation assures you that this is all part of the plan laid out by our glorious High Emperor. We cannot say much more over this insecure civillian channel, so have an agent renzevous with our agent at Drop Point 314, where you will be given your new orders.

All Hail the High Emperor!

There will be no need for a censor, Liutenant. As stated earlier, everything is happening as laid out by the High Emperor. The Human's reactions to this breach in security has been flawlessly conducted according to His plan, with the aftermath being crucial to the overwhelming of their defences.

All Hail the High Emperor!

Wouldn't that just be an Ice Comet?

I mean this is what he said in the the video: "What else doesn't show it self until it's hit by solar radiation?"

Well just about every solid object in the universe.
Pretty much that. It's probably a comet/asteroid/meteorite etc. Maybe even an undiscovered moon?
Either those, or it's Mercury itself. You know, like actual scientists said it was.
