Hmm, the numbers thing is very interesting. I don't think it's days, as I posted the 7 a lot more than 3 days ago, but if not days, what is it counting

The truth is out there, but it is in dutch.

What's in the Box? Director Tim Smit interview in De Wereld Draait Door [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8rRb4z0gVA] (Dutch only, no subtitles)

It is a fan made video. Made on a budget of 150 euros and a pizza. The creator Tim Smit, a science-student at the radboud univeristy in Nijmegen, made this movie as a test to see what he could achieve with his limited resources and skill. The guy has for years (as a hobby) tried to understand how hollywood does its special effects. There are plans for a 90 minute movie.

It's actually quite weird to see this movie, i live maybe a 10 minute walk away from where it was shot.

So it's a preview/test for a fan made film.

off topic: Joined just so i could tell you all.

Thanks for shedding some light on the mystery. And welcome to the Escapist!

I'm starting to wish I spoke Dutch, now.

And that's awesome that you live so close to the location. Any idea how he managed to get all those streets cleared, and get to use a public transit bus in his movie? Normally that would be quite expensive.

A lot of the streets appear to be part of residential neighborhoods or industrial neighborhoods, and those can be pretty much deserted at times. (residential during the day when everybody is at work or school, industrial in the evening when everybody is at home) But one of the streets (Daalseweg [http://maps.google.nl/maps?hl=nl&client=firefox-a&q=Daalseweg+Nijmegen&ie=UTF8&split=0&gl=nl&ei=guTQSYuSEtTF-QaO9PHUBw&z=15]) is usually fairly busy, lots of shops etc so lots of people. I guess he just waited for the right opportunity, in the interview he did say it took him 3 days to shoot all the material.

And i wouldn't know how he got the bus, it does appear to be one of the buses used in the city's public transportation system.

In my dreams: Valve have thrown their money and expertise in with the guys making Black Mesa:Source.

In reality: Goodness knows, here's hoping Half Life 2: Opposite Force...

Also, he's using my phone, ckeeky bastard, I've been wondering where it went.
Its most likely for black mesa.

The description of the video has changed to this:
000000000000000000
000000000000000000
0000.......................0000
0000......OPEN......0000
0000........THE.......0000
0000........BOX.......0000
0000.......................0000
0000.......................0000
www.whatsinthebox.nl
000000000000000000

and the site, whatsinthebox.nl has changed to just show a red ring.

Even with the explanation from the interview, I'm still intrigued as to what's going to happen in the full version.

The host site has changed from the pulsating box to a single red circle.

It apparently requires a code to enter. If an incorrect code is given, it says, "uh uh uh, you didn't say the magic word" Clearly a reference to Jurassic Park. If you try "Please" as the password, it says, "Who are you, Denis Nedry?" Again, Jurassic Park reference.

There are more mysterious digits if you hold your cursor over the bottom quadrant of the circle. These may or may not be the code.

As far as I've found, no one has yet cracked the code.

Wow, that was a very cool video. I'm a bit late though, so I may just sit this one out.

I was looking through the community levels of LittleBigPlanet today and I found a level called "What's in the box?" The description was the "open the box" one and it was a perfect representation of the video. Just thought I'd put that out there for anyone still interested in this mystery.

It looks fan made. Valve would have probably been able to afford to make a better looking video. While this one is still well made, Valve would have made it look like Valve made it.

Also, what is in the box?

Has nobody else noticed this? Just barely visible below and to the left of the ring. (Photoshopped here for your ease of reference.)

I'm not sure how to do that upwards line or I'd try to plug that into the code box.

Looks a lot like Escape From City 17, as seen in Escapist News here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.88006

Think about it, sure, this has Valve knowledge of it, but considering the costumes of the "Combine", I would have to say it is fan/indy made, much like the aforementioned video. The rest? Fan hype and hope - sure, eventually we are going to get something on Episode 3, but unless you count Valve's very dedicated fans, I doubt very much this a viral campaign.
That's what I thought.

Who knows, this could just so happen to do NOTHING with Half-Life. I know the citadel and sound effects are uncanny but sometimes people like to get "inspiration" for things they do.

I wonder if the douche who made the site will get sued for copyright infringement..
If it's really a movie or a game, it had better be good, or I swear to god when he reveals his true name I'll kill 'im!

It's fan made. It is made by a guy named Thibaut Niels and one named Tim Smit. It's for the sake of fun. They were not hired by VALVe, but they are big fans. The video was shot in the city of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, from which my house is five miles. It was shot both on the Radboud university campus and the industrial district. Thibaut Niels got approached by several movie companies, including a lot from Hollywood, asking how he managed to get such high standard effects in what was practically a movie made by one man.

If you cut of the down half and mirror the top half downwards, it reads 'THE BOX = HELL'

Button at the bottom right of the video leads to http://babel-research.eu/

Black Mesa and Aperture Science logos down at the bottom.

On that site, advertisements for the gadgets used in the video. Seems pretty elaborate for a fan-made thing.

Using the remote access number in said site also refers back to Aug. 6th. Sure seems like an advertisement for something.

Along with the logos is one for the Hanso Foundation, which is apparently a LOST reference?

Searching results in http://www.thehansofoundation.org/

Holding the mouse over the word humanity plays a video. I don't even know anymore.
