Whoever made this obviously went to a helluva lot of trouble to construct the website, too. It seems odd a student/fan film would make such an enigmatic site to host one video. The quality, and the mystery, of the site says 'commercial purpose' to me.

I took a screenshot of when you put your mouse over the cube and when you don't.

Here they are:

When I clicked on the link I saw "fact" or "fast" in the four little letter/number spot below the cube for about half a second.
Wait... in the second one it has question marks where some letters should be... maybe someone a little more patient than me could decode the message.

Also, this video looked pretty good. Looks like Episode 3, considering the sky was turning in a similar style as the sky above the citadel.

I suppose the Black Mesa reference, clearly readable on the HUD's news ticker, solidifies the video's involvement with Half-Life.

I get the sense that the audio track as it stands is temporary. The maker may yet synthesize their own sound effects for the "Combine", maybe put in the track for the main character, and do some more foley.

Certainly, it's a work in progress. I look forward to seeing the next step.

Good lord, that was awesome. Hope that this is either:
A) A promo for a new Half-Life game
B) A new IP
C) City 17

It's too good to be unprofessional.

If you read the post on the original website now you can see it is fan made.
Can you trust valve, though?

Mysterious Video: Is Valve Going Viral?

A new video that's popped up online has Valve [http://orange.half-life2.com/hl2.html] game.

The video features graphics and sound lifted from Half-Life 2 and a setting that strongly echoes Valve's bleak Combine-infested world. There's also the fact that the title of the video, What's in the Box?, is a strong allusion to Valve's last Half-Life-based release, the Orange Box [http://orange.half-life2.com/].

The site linked in the video, whatsinthebox.nl [http://www.whatsinthebox.nl/], leads to a single Flash-based page with movie-style credits, a pulsating box and the header, "Soon the world will find out."

Find out what? Portal 2 is coming? Half-Life 3? Or is this just a commercial for a really durable line of coveralls? Watch here [http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3173344] and commence speculation!

It's fake according to the link...

It turns out that the video is not officially connected with Valve in any way. It may be well put together, but Doug Lombardi, Valve's Vice President of Marketing, talked to GameSpy via email, saying, "The Box video was a cool piece from the community. Two in just a few weeks. I hope there's more on the way." The other video he's referring to, a short film series called "Escape from City 17," is another fan made internet feature set in the Half-Life universe.

I also noticed that earlier today. Are we sure the YouTube user is also the person hosting the site? (And potentially the maker?)

The drawing just appears to be a cube, but we see the return of that mysterious name, "TimSmiT." What does it mean?

Under the video it says it isn't officially connected to Valve. In which case, very good job from whoever made it.

I thought this looked sweet. "Looked" being the best word. For me this trailer (or whatever it ends up being) went down hill at the point when the protaginist drew a weapon which looked like it came from a Happy Meal.

Anyway, i could be wrong and will keep my eyes open for more.

Keep an eye on it, that is an "S", it could spell a word? Eventually?

Actually, I checked again today, and now it's a big ASCII "4". So I guess that's actually a "5", not an "S".

It's already been through 7 and 6, but at the time I don't think anyone recognized what they were. It's counting down! I think it's counting down the days, but not sure. Seems to be, though.

4 more days? Then will the world "find out"?

As long as, at the end of the countdown, it doesn't turn out to be a Resonance Cascade. I'd really rather not be conquered by the Combine. Again.

It's half life two ep 3 (valve even said ep 3 THEN half life 3) next, not half life 3, portal two hasn't been talked about by valve in over 10 months, don't get your hopes up, no where near time for another crappy box package.... (as long as they don't release it for consoles.... im happy! I better somehow stop those EA retards i hate so much......)

also, if you watch the video, this isnt valve made, since when did the combine look like that?

more proof that im right.... read the information on the bottom of the video here: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3173344

Actually, as far as I know, VALVe plans to be done with the series after Half-Life 2: Episode 3. There are no plans for a Half-Life 3. However, the creators have admitted that it may have been prudent to name the episodic sequels to HL2 as "Half-Life 3: Episode 1, etc."

What do you mean, "crappy"? The Orange Box is heralded (rightly so) as one of the best things VALVe has ever done for the consumer. You can't beat value like that.

Also, why the hate on for consoles? Lots of people have The Orange Box for their console. If you don't like playing it on the console, don't worry about it.

Yes, thank you. We'd already covered that in this thread. You don't get points for successfully guessing what's already been established in previous posts.
