A lot of good songs in this thread, and since I've been ninja'd a few times already, I offer you these three songs from three different genres. All of which might as well get me high, I enjoy them all so much.
Portal's Still Alive. It always makes me happy. But a song that always makes me sad is Disturbed's I'm Alive because i related that to a story i made once. The guy dies for his girl =(
Anything funny like Psychostick or Stephen Lynch. Most of the time i listen to angry or depressing music though.

And just what is wrong with anime soundtracks? I could see your argument if you were referring to typical j-pop, as in that case, 'typical' means 'horrible engrish.' However, lots of songs from animes are just as filled with emotion and good singing as American songs, because ethnicity doesn't really matter when it comes to skilled vocal work. Take the band Oomph! (Yes, I know it's a stupid name. Just bear with me.) or the song Baba Yetu from Civilization IV. Anyway, Japanese songs sound distinctly more poetic than almost any other country when translated. They don't need to use the childish way of rhyming every two sentences, because the language does that well enough on its own. Instead, they sound like what songs really are: poems with instruments and rhythm. Rhyming shouldn't be required.
It might of been said already, though I can never feel bad with this.
Oddly enough however, the lyrics are a little depressing...
