A game that has aged well is The digimon world sereis in my eyes i play the first 3 (and ONLY 3 IMHO) regularly because they are still very graphically tolerable to me. also the story in each onw sil managed to keep me interested.

A game aged bad is the syphon filter sries I cant even play the first one again because of the bad look and the bad voice acting plus each one got worse by trying to do to much in my eyes.

Two that have aged very well would have to be Final Fantasy VII. Storywise you will not find anything more loved than that. Also Dawn of War. Still an amazing RTS.
One more that I still love but most would not is Warhammer: Dark Omen. To me that is one of the greatest RTS ever.
If you take the nostalgia goggles off, you'll probably see that popeye arms didn't age all that well.
Yeah that's great coming from someone who calls FF VII a VI rewrite... lets just put you down as biased shall we.... Plus VI was meh at best. There's a reason VII is still considered one of the greatest JRPGs ever.
Yeah, players who started the series at 7 and never looked back.
Bah, that's a cop out and you know it. I played VI before VII and still prefer VII. So claiming people only like VII because they have not play VI is bullshit.
Not really a copout because I find it true most of the time. Anyway, I can't get into replaying VII because it looks terrible, has aged terribly, and like I said, the story is just a rewrite of VI. Replace Returners with AVALANCHE, replace the Empire with Shinra, replace Magitech with SOLDIER, and instead of failing to save the world from destruction and just getting your friends back to kick a God's ass for spite, you save the world from being destroyed in the first place (cliche..)

As for MGS, I have to say that I was playing it a year ago, before MGS4's release and I felt it held up really well. Yeah the graphics are dated, but I think the character designs kind of transcend the limitations.
The only thing that bugs me about MGS is the camera, I'm quite happy with how the rest of it holds up though, all of them do really well.

I'd say Windwaker would get my vote, I know it's not very old but that game feels like it hasn't aged a day. If only it weren't for the silly long boat rides.....

Erm, I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but I recently tried to play Final Fantasy VII for the first time, it just didn't hold up for me, so I'd like to submit that for my game that hasn't aged well.

Edit: Oh, looks like there's already some flaming about it going on just above me.

I think Super-metroid has aged very well and it's still fun for me.

I used to think Mortal Kombat 2 on the mega-drive looked ace. I saw it again recently and it looked bloody awful!
Super metroid.. man.. the hours i spent hunting this down when i was about 14.. paid something like 60 (a HUGE amount of money for someone who didn't work at the time) only to have my lil bro ruin it like 1 month after. So much pain and anguish!

In the spirit of the thread.. i have to go with Starcraft as one of the better aging games. I still log onto bnet and get into it. Not so much for its graphics (i'd be happy if SC2 was the same game with better resolution!) but more because it is very well balanced, a lot of fun, and the 'User Map Settings' designed maps are awesome.. even if the whole 'lights on/lights off' thing got broke good.

I'm also inclined to a bit of Zelda: OoT, or even MM to a degree.. both these games have barely aged at all.

One that I found had aged horribly is the original Jedi Knight. I tried to play it since I'm a huge fan of Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy but I found it really hard to enjoy. I usually don't think graphics matter, but half the time you have to guess what it is you are shooting at, and finding where to go next is really freaking hard when everything looks the same. I'm guessing this game was innovative at it's time, but nowadays you can swing a lightsaber even in non Star Wars games, so it's kind of lost it's charm.
I'm inclined to go with this for a poorly aged game. Partly becuase i can't think of anything else right now.. and partly because i installed this for some nostalgic reason or another not too long ago. I think the problem with it was more that i was comparing it to Jedi Academy (which is still an awesomely fun game.. WTB another one in the series) which is, understandably, a lot better.

game that aged well.. i have a PS1 and only one game for it. Grandia
i played it at a freinds house, bought it and i still play it about once or twice a month.

and aged horribly Madden. They need to get it like power pro's MLB so instead of going though Superstar mode getting yards make it so you can use your money on stuff. buy a house a car i dont care. just more than it is now, fan points i want rival teams to hate me i want to see signs in the stands calling for my death. when i run in a TD i want to be met with boos and beer cans flung at my helmet. but it will never happen becuse its would make it fun.

sorry for the double post but...

well, to be honest, i prefer VIII to both VI and VII, it just felt more grown up and i still think some of the cinematics look nice today

VIII came after that precious few years into the 3d era that the art is at least passable. Unfortunately I disliked the story and gameplay of VIII, but I will admit it has aged better than VII.

Spyro thrillogy on the PS1 is still quite fun to play, so I guess that's aged well. A game that hasn't aged well will probably be the original Mortal Kombat, which is laughable compared to modern day fighting games. (I don't why, it was just the only one I could think of)

I'll agree that the original Mortal Kombat requires some nostalgia goggles to really appreciate today, due to the fact that you can just corner someone and uppercut spam them to death, not to mention, a small cast of fighters. MK2 I think aged better.

I've played Red Alert, Riven, Nethack, Deus Ex, Fallout 2 and Liero since they came out, and I'm not tired yet.
A couple of bad agers are Thief 1&2, though the sneak gameplay is great, the graphics are just too awful.

I think all the early point and clicks have aged magnificently. I don't think up-to-date graphics would help at all, as they are all about story and humour. It also probably helps that the genre is pretty much dead so there haven't been any major advances to the genre.
I think the classic FPS games (like doom, wolfenstein, etc.) have aged very badly. They are still enjoyable to go back to (though probably only for nostalgia's sake) but really the seem very bad now because of the fact that there have been so many advances in the genre (such as 3d models, in-depth story telling, intelligent AI, gameplay that has advanced beyond 'find red key to open red door', etc.)

Sure.. I was just saying my personal opinion, things that age in video games are things like graphics, sound, and presentation, and in some cases controls, as in now that the Wii is out and we've played a Metroid Prime with the Wiimote, it's hard to go back to Metroid Prime and Echoes without missing our point at the screen aiming.. so the games feel like they haven't aged as well because of it.

Things that DON'T age in a game generally are story.. that's why someone toting Final Fantasy VII as aging well due to story doesn't sit well with me because story doesn't age, but it's graphics, sound (the sound actually has aged well), presentation (cut scenes and the like.. visually they have aged but as a story telling device they haven't aged as much) have aged, and not very well. In most cases controls and gameplay don't age so much either, in FF VII's case the controls haven't really aged, or have done so well. However some of the gameplay with the really long summoning sequences.. well.. because the visual quality is so lacking by today's standards.. it's a detractor from the gameplay to have really long summon animations.

I don't really agree that Ocarina of Time has aged well. It still has that raw fun element to it, but its very unrefined compared to its follow-ups, and it doesn't have the sheer sense of wonder it had on release. I have the same opinion of Mario 64 and Final Fantasy VII (fuck you, I like turn based combat). Res Evil has aged terribly as well. I don't think any of the verb based point and click adventure games come across well nowadays either, but that may just be because it utilises such archaic gameplay elements (still a good experience though).

Metal Gear Solid I think has aged very well. The heavily stylised characters go some way towards helping that, and the enclosed environments aren't too restrictive.

I agree with the person who mentioned the Thief series still being very fun too. I recently played The Dark Project for the first time, and after getting used to it, I found it a very enjoyable experience. Horrific graphics and animations, but it was engrossing enough for me to mostly overlook that.

I was very suprised how well Nights comes across today. Sure, the graphical limitations of the Saturn are there for all to see, but such fluid gameplay, bright, vibrant backgrounds and warped character designs are timeless.

I could go on, but thats all I'm saying for now.

Street Fighter 2. Still can't stop playing it and nothing about it is regretful or off-putting. A game I don't think has aged well is Mirror's Edge. I've never even played it, but I haven't heard or seen it's name for months.

Games that have aged well:
Most great games with 2D graphics: Fallout 1&2, Starcraft (hell, even Warcraft 2), Diablo 2.
Games that haven't:
Games with reletively early 3D graphics.

Halo 1 aged well. In my game collection it's sort of like the expensive eight year old wine that I covet in my celler you know. And when I give it a sip (playthrough) man it justs tastes great (plays all fun-like).

Can't think of one that didn't age well.
