Last Exile. I like the idea and some of the episodes are pretty good, but for some reason, the show itself never seems to get better then "good at times".
Naruto and Bleach. I used to love them but it's been a long time since the story in either has been compelling. Naruto hasn't been quite the same since the timeskip and Bleach hasn't been good since the end of the Soul Society Arc.
One Piece is UNDERRATED if anything (in the West ofc). It's what the other 2 of the big trio would have been like if they'd taken more inspiration from DragonBall and less from Z - which is why I still watch it.
While valid, that doesn't answer my question. How is it overrated? It's hated, I get that. But overrated?
I suppose I can add another log to the fire: Rebuild of Evangelion 2.22
I'm sorry, I know you tried to defend me and all, but that movie ruined Shinji, Rei, and Asuka for me. And somehow, people like it more than the original series.
The first movie was decent, but that's only because it was almost a carbon copy of the first eight or so episodes of the series.
It turned Asuka from a mean, but sufferable ***** into an insufferable *****. Packing 15 episodes of ***** into one movie does that, but they could have gone a little easier on the bitchiness just a smidge.
Then we have Rei. In NGE, she was charming because we didn't really know what she was thinking and what her motivations were until later. At first, she was following orders from Gendo so he would allow her to die like a normal person. Now, she's in love with Shinji. That's her motivation. That isn't deep, that's cliche. She's become one of her clones, falling in love with the lead. They even made her shy. Ugghhh.
Take notice: Shinji Ikari never got back on the train out of Tokyo 3. It's a nice piece of symbolism: he never ran away. He may have "quit" twice, but he never left Tokyo 3 and he always came back because he knew it was the right thing to do. He didn't even know just how important stopping the Angels was until the second time he "quit" and do you know what he did then? He got back in EVA Unit 01 and kicked space Cthulhu ass, even though he hated every second of it. This makes him (to me) one of the most heroic characters in fiction and to date my favorite character in animation history. I don't care how badass everyone says Kamina is. He's not remotely heroic.
By the way, being emo only applies if the person in question doesn't have a good reason. If anyone has ever had a good reason to behave like Shinji did, it's Shinji.
What does he do in Rebuild? He tries to escape Tokyo 3 and the only reason he doesn't is because he is physically trapped there unless he takes the train out. In 2.22 he causes quite a bit of damage to NERV going on a temper tantrum because Gendo killed Toji with the dummy plug. In the original series, that was the second time Shinji "quit." Here, he does the same thing and physically leaves Tokyo 3. He ran away. He comes back, sure, but he still left on that train. So, Shinji already has why he's fighting Angels and the consequences of losing explained to him, and Unit 02 (with Mari in it) is mangled, but he still just sulks. You know what it takes to get him back in Unit 01? Rei being eaten by Zeruel. He then begins Third Impact to get her back. He (almost) ended the world to save a girl he thought was dead. Stupid. Selfish. Asshole.
I don't want a carbon copy of what I hold dear, but did Hideaki Anno really have to ruin it like this? NGE isn't perfect, not by a long shot. There was so much potential to repair the things Gainax got wrong at first, but they have only answered question and made characters seem like they came from Gurren Lagann. It could have been better, but it's only gotten worse.
To name one, the most recent i watched: Code Geass.
Code Geass was a huge letdown imho.
I expected a "smart" anime, i got a overly cliche mecha story full of hypocritical 'Sues (Suzaku being one the worst "mary sue" i have seen so far in anime, every scene he is in have him doing something perfect, and pulling a deus-ex machina out of nowhere). The only character i kind of liked was Lelouch, but only because he was the only one with some sort of personality and brain.
One thing I am glad about several of these animes is that as much as places like these threads makes their displeasure rather..... vocal, is that such thoughts really seem to be pretty much come down to subjecture.
I love NGE and Gurren Lagann, but I can understand if it's not others' cup of tea.
I cannot agree with the mass popularity of some anime, like Bleach.
Mainly for my pure disdain for Ichigo and several of the bimbos on it. But that's only me...
I was wondering why nobody said anything on One Piece. I love it personally, but I can't see why nobody seemed to have mentioned it.
I gotta Say Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I LOVED the original but I found Brotherhood (Which followed the manga) more convoluted and just plain dopey. And then the fandom ordered my death for heresy.
I totally agree with you. The first anime had this kind of intellectual fantasy story, and covered some pretty heavy topics about war and race and etc. Plus I actually loved the big twist. Apparently in the manga everyone had squarer jaws, stouter builds and was more of a battle series than anything else.
Also I agree with everyone about Death Note. It's the type of show/manga that kids in middle school like because they think it's all dark and mature and they want to seem grown up, but doesn't have much of an impact really.
And for a personal pet peeve of mine: Gundam Wing. It's like the only Gundam series the majority of American anime fans know, and whenever a new Gundam game gets release, they will always ask for either a Gundam Wing game or more Gundam Wing content, thinking that it's what everyone wants not realizing that it's not as big in Japan.

He's SUPPOSED to be like that. He's a deconstruction of the typical mecha pilot main character (like Kira Yamato in Gundam SEED for example) whose inexplicably skilled at what he does. By taking that kind of character and putting him as the adversary and the main character as the "chess master" type, plays around with the traditional skill sets that heroes and villains have.
For me, it's Fullmetal Alchemist. People are considering it one of the greatest anime series of all time when, in the end, its generic, doesn't quite come together, and the world makes more sense than the story.
Three of them: Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach. I know that chances are, they will never stop making more but I started from the beginning with all of them and I am ending with all of them.
You know theyre mostly for kids right? Id say one piece is probably the most hyped amongst fans of shonen and bleach is the worst but still theyre shonen and focused for kids.
The mangas certainly are not. I have kind of left off on the anime dubs and instead, just reading the manga. So much more violent and so much more mature.
every anime we didn't like is overrated.
it doesn't matter that we didn't understand it or simply it isn't our favorite genre.
if we didn't like it, then it is automatically overrated.
Death Note. Fucking stupid, plot is okay but people talk like its the best story ever written for anything ever.
The characters wernt that good, ending sucked.
And screw L. I have no idea why people hype it up so much, its okay. Not bad, just not the godchild of perfection people make it out to be.
Haruhi Suzumiya. I tuned in expecting them to take the whole "God is a teenage girl" and run with it. What I got was a basic high school anime made worse by grating, stereotypical stock characters
Actually, I think you might have just summed up Hellsing pretty well. It was a pretty brainless DMC type of affair. I liked it, but it was brainless at times.
I agree with everything that's been said thus far.
I dunno maybe it's coz I don't like being told what's good but every time I'm told that some series is "Like the best anime EVAR!" by my friends it never holds up. Or maybe my friends are into boring stupid anime and I just shouldn't listen to them. Which is logical considering one adores Dragonball Z, and One Piece. She has terrible taste.
99% of anime in general is overrated. The quality of the animation is pathetic, the voice acting is horrible and the plot/dialogue seem to have been written by a 13 year old.
Obviously there are always exceptions, but anime on the whole is utter dross.
For someone who followed Naruto a bit, this is kind of awkward. Now I'm just waiting for the end to come so I can find out who died, who lived, and whether Sasuke stops being a prick.
After season 2, I couldn't stand watching Bleach anymore. The main character annoyed the hell out of me, I disliked most of the girls on the show, and the plot seemed to just follow the DBZ format. You beat up one set of villians because you magically gained some awesome power at the last minute and then another comes up and you just repeat.
I just...I can't. My friends love it, but I can't stand it.
