Don't just post lists, guys. Just posting a list and not elaborating on the list can get you a warning/infraction. Source: the warning/infraction I got for posting a list and not elaborating on it.

I'd post a list of my own, but as I am a PC gamer I don't really think in terms of "gens".

Enslaved
Vanquish

Well these two are of those rare games I have actually finished and yet almost none of my friends have played them.

It's hard to see if a game falls in a range of two dates...

Er, wouldn't that classify as last gen, not this gen?

Seeing as how the Wii U has been released, I mean.

Hmm, for me ... no particular order as well ...

1) Warriors Orochi 3 (PS3)

I know this is one of those games people would complain - "it's doing the same thing again and again" ... the real incentive is to see the storyline and the character interaction that really steals the show for the Warriors Orochi series (part 1 especially) - basically due to the fact that they have mixed 2 famous dynasties of Chinese and Japanese warlords and warriors into 1 universe and see you can see how different or alike they really are when waging war against a great foe.

It's hard to get non-DW/SW fans to buy into this game, so it's kinda shunned by most players i know of.

2) Toro! Let's party / Toro to Morimori (PS3)

If you love Sony, chances are you would know who Toro is! The mascot's first and i think only English game - it's actually quite a decent game to whip out to play during a party! The amount of minigames is quite a bit and the difficulty to get the trophies are just plain time consuming and difficult too! My niece managed to beat the main storyline and we still whip it out once in awhile to get the minigame related trophies - if it's available for the cheap, it could be an enjoyable purchase.

Again, people would shun this because it's too cute and too silly as well. Well, remember that it's a mascot cat after all, so don't expect it to be serious anyway.

3) Samurai Warriors Chronicles (3DS)

Yes, another Warriors-related game ... this time for the 3DS. I think it's a pretty decent gem - considering they never released an English version of SW3 on Xbox360 and PS3; it was only available on Wii - the Japanese Wii system got the Xtreme Legends expansion, while the full experience was made only for Japan via the PS3 (which i have) and PSP ... so if you're a fan who only wants to deal with English language, the only way is via the 3DS!

The nice part is that they actually allow you to create a custom general for the game, which you will be using most of the time through the missions and again, it's your interaction with the SW warlords and warriors that make the game interesting. Unlike the SW series on the consoles - the storyline is centered on your created general than the different factions or in-game general's story outlines.

Not to mention the streetpass battles are also a good way to interact with a community of fellow hand-held gamers. I got to know a nice bunch of 3DS owners through our streetpass battles using this game. We still do meet up once in awhile as a community to exchange game data with each other, so this game's streetpass data gets passed around quite a bit!

4) Lego Rockband (Xbox360)

Because it's cute and it limits your playlist of RB DLCs to family friendly tracks doesn't make this less of a Rock Band game! It's actually quite interesting and funny as well, plenty of brick related humour and Lego puns to go around to keep everyone entertained! Lego fans would enjoy the amount of customization of the different characters, as well as the familiar Legoland universe that is all cramped into one fun music game!

The only downer for me is the limiting of songs - the game has pre-determined which ones are friendly for family and which are not ... so not being able to perform some of my downloaded songs with Lego people is my only minor complaint about the game!

5) Dynasty Warriors 7 (PS3)

Okay, i know you all must be saying - this guy is just going too far with pushing out DW/SW/WO games ... but hear me out, i would stand for DW7 more than the older series - simply because it became more serious in tone compared to the older series - the story lines are now driven closer to the actual RoTK storyline, so you would expect the tone to be less comical than previous games. And the fact that now it even expands to the story of the Jin kingdom coming into play against the 3 weakened kingdoms - it's interesting how KOEI has decided to go on the more serious tone for the series' 10th anniversary!

Because of this, i am expecting the next one - DW8 which is coming in Feb 2013 in Japan first, to remain as hard, serious and possibly more accurate than before!

If it is very shunned by players, then they would certainly have missed out the huge change in the story telling and the overall tone of the game; which is something i've looked forward to experiencing for awhile.

Yeah you are correct these don' really make a good case for each game.

Dondonpachi Resurrection and Akia Katana are both Bullet Hell shmups by CAVE interactive Co, shmups are a very niche genre so these would be automatically under rated but what makes it worse is the quality of these games is excellent, a feast for the eyes for anyone who enjoys colourfull 2D artwork but with refined fast flowing gameplay to boot, and like the fighting game genre it takes skill to master them there are noob friendly modes for casual players. Considering boxed shmups are some of the cheapest games to buy new online there's no excuse. Akai Katana is only around £5 new on Amazon for a game less than a year old and of that quality it's criminal

Binary Domain, I think has much better gameplay than Gears, ppl dismissed the game as a cheap Gears knock off, but it's gameplay is better refined, faster paced plus has some of the best boss battles ever seen this gen. The AI of your team mates is improved too.

Vanquish plays nothing like a normal cover shooter, Binary Domain is Gears +, Vanquish is unique, very fast and arcade like in its gameplay.

As someone who loved the old 2D Street Fighter 2 and hates how Capcom has gone 3D, SkullGirls is the game to itch that scratch and then some. Love the 2D artwork and animation, 30s style and jazz music, shame it never really took off online and was ruined by MS and Sony's charging $10k each per patch. The game really needs to be on PC asap where it can shine. What is weird is that gamers ignored it called it a rip off due to the lack of a full on practice mode, even though it was a budget XBLA release that probably has the most bang for your buck out of everything on XBLA. How often do NEW arcade games of that quality come out? Shame on those gamers! no wonder everything is rereleases of old games.

Sin and Punishment 2 and Child of Eden are both rail shooters which went under the radar, shame the genre has fallen from popularity as a good rail shooter like those and Panzer Dragoon are FUN and great for casual play. Maybe gamers are ignoring the genre due to motion controls however S&P2 is great with a wiimote and nunchuck and CoE plays better with a pad than kinect and is a very visually stunning game.

Anarchy Reigns considering it's unique in that it's DMC/God of War with MP and £20 RRP launch price why they hell isn't everybody who likes console MP buying this game? It's a blast.

Seeing that some people have tossed on Halo 3: ODST on the list, I feel that I must say that even though I DID enjoy the game, I don't think that it justifies its $60 price tag. It was a great shift in presentation and felt very different than any other Halo games, but it was pretty short for its price. Also, it had quite a bit of eyestrain for me.

I'm not entirely sure how underrated this is, but I feel Skate 2 was an excellent game that I really don't hear too much about anymore. Aside from the awkward walking physics, it had plenty of replayability for me.

The only other one I can think of that I really enjoyed but isn't mentioned TOO often is Rayman Origins. It was a fun and fresh platformer that had the most important thing the New Super Mario Bros. games didn't have: A SOUL. Similarly to Rayman Origins is LittleBigPlanet, but that got a bit more buzz.

Hmm, well, in no particular order and I guess I have to constrain it to console games since we're talking generations?

Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk.2
Asura's Wrath
Atelier Totori
Record of Agarest War 2
Lollipop Chainsaw (Thank you Jim for acknowledging this magnificent piece of game)

(I'm including Wii titles, because we all know what the OT meant when he/she said "this generation".

1: Spec Ops The Line (Xbox/PS3)
2. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (Xbox/PS3)
3. No More Heroes Despertate Struggle (Wii)
4. Sonic Generations (Xbox/PS3) (a lot of people seemed to hate it, even though it's the first time in a while Sonic Team got a Sonic game right)
5. Loz Twilight Princess (Wii) (I thought this was brilliant, yet some people seem to discard it as an only okay Zelda game)

(Also, Rayman Origins, because seriously, what. a. game.)

I can't think of more than three, so here I go.

3. Duke Nukem Forever

This game was released to widespread venom and bile spewed in its general direction as a result of what was perceived as "offensive" humor and bland, uninspired gameplay. While both of those things are true to an extent, Duke Nukem Forever is far from the abomination it's accused of being. The gameplay is mediocre at worst, and the humor hasn't changed from Duke Nukem 3D at all. The hive was in that game too, in case your memory fails you.

2. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

Better than Gears of War 3? You betcha! This game is a roaring good time, with visceral, satisfying combat that seamlessly blends third-person shooters with hack-and-slash action games in a way that more games really should recognize. I even enjoyed the multiplayer, although that peer-to-peer crap needs to stop.

1. Nier

Simply the fact that the current generation's best game is rarely recognized as such is enough to earn Nier the number one spot. When games like The Walking Dead are praised for their stories but Nier is disregarded, I die a little inside, because there is no game in the world with a better story than Nier(or, come to think of it, a better soundtrack). Nier is an epic tragedy spanning three acts and taking place over the course of over 1,000 miserable years that forces the player to walk miles upon miles in the shoes of a man whose sheer unwavering love for his daughter gives him the strength to do anything in the world. This is how you portray a father figure. Suck it, Heavy Rain.

1. Halo 3 ODST, yh it had its flaws and was too short but it was really good.
2. Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine. ok net work problems and was a bit mishandled but...god you feel so awsome
3. Overlord
4.Dragons Dogma, it was unrifined and unpolished, but it was stll a gam
5. Assassin's Creed Revelations, not sure if it under rated but every thread where its mentioned it gets trashed

Casual Shinji

Should've gone before we left.

The only one I can think of at the moment is Red Faction: Guerrilla.

The story and characters were bland as hell, but the 'destroy every man made object' gameplay was just so lovely. Having firefights in a slowly crumbling building while goons outside are blasting the structure apart from around you is an experience no other game this generation has met.

And near the end you get a frikking jetpack, too.
