I always keep "Link" the same. It's a matter of nostalgia and love. I LOVED that LoZ:TP let you change the horse's name. I named that ***** "Agro" (Shadow of the Colossus, anyone?) sodamnfast. I hate "Epona".

In Pokemon, I name them after mythological figures. And in RPGs... my first run, keep the defaults. The second run, I extrapolate what I know about the characters and name them appropriately.

There is a single exception. In Rune Harvest, I was so appalled at the boredom inherent in the name "Raguna" and named him "Astraeus," Greek god of astronomy and father of the four wind gods- One of which is "Zephyrus", where I get my catch-all multiplayer name. If you ever see a "LadyZephyrus" on a free MMORPG, it may very well be me.

When I have to make a "quick character" in Mass Effect I just name them "Shepard Shepard" - for LoZ it's always link, and for everything else, it's whatever name I think fit's them best, even if it's "fagballs" or "titty".

I generally go with "Shad."

I think you can see why.

Unless I'm playing a second time through or am naming an NPC [Epona and Gary Oak, for example]. I usually name them something funny and immature. Prime example [http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h318/Shipwreck1/IMG_0512-1.jpg].

I almost always use Spleeni nowadays for just about everything.

I don't know why, I just like the word spleen.

I sometimes used my own name for simplicity.

Other times I search for obscure Biblical, Arabic, or Jewish names that reflect the character. For example, a feminine name I use often for KOTOR 2, Junyada, comes from the male name Junayd, which means "small army".

I picked up Daemon ages ago from some fantasy novel... used it in D&D games and so naturally when they started letting you name yourself in video games I kept it up. The 8's are just cause Daemon is always taken and 8's are supposed to be lucky. I catch enormous hell on XBL... people just cant seem to pronounce the "ae" thing... but that makes me just like it better.

Usually I stick with the default unless it really sucks...

I usually name female characters after types of music ex. Aria, Harmony, Melody etc.

I don't have a naming scheme for male characters, except Link, I always name him Ark for whatever reason.

I used to pick Magic: The gathering cards at random for naming my MMO characters.
Isperia Wolfblood, Hidetsugu, Krosan etcetera.

I do have an Helga Shepard though, she's hot.
