OT: I *so* hope it's life. A single nonterrestrial bacterium or mold spore, dead and frozen though it may be, would upturn all notions of our place in the universe.

I expect they've found ice crystals, or complex pre-biological chemicals, amino acids or somesuch. "Earthshaking" was almost certainly an overstatement outside the narrow field of interest they're operating in.

What they have most likely found is life. Bacterial life, which they have been predicting for a few years now. They have already witnessed bacterial life forms survive meteor impacts. Its not exactly a far stretch. As well since we've discovered not all life on earth is carbon based it definitely opens up alot of other avenues.
