jokes aside, there are, i think, various signatures they can detect now for planets which would suggest advanced life on it (via the gasses in the atmosphere affecting the light given off and certain things showing up in the spectrographic analysis)

possibly they have found one
While that is technically true I'm not sure it could actually be used to detect signs of life on other planets outside our solar system. The way they look for extrasolar planets is to look for very, very, almost imperceptible variation in the luminosity of stars caused by a planet orbiting between our line of sight and the star. The light planets radiate is so slight that it's washed out by the immense luminosity of the star it orbits. So I'm assuming although this method would work for planets in our solar system I'm not sure it would for extrasolar planets.

Anyone remember that whole thing years ago about the rock from Mars that supposedly had, what was it, fossil evidence of bacteria or something? Not sure if it turned out it actually was or no but as I recall scientists had a good argument about whether it was actually life or not. I bet it's just something like that, I'll wait to get excited until they actually tell us what it is.

If there are micro-organisms it would only be a matter of time before it evolves into a intelegent life.
("a matter of time" meaning millions of years)

Perhaps it's just about their discovery of oxygen on Rhea that happened so very recently? Let's not jump to "ALIENS!" conclusions...

We would be doomed to endless dialog and power-charging/ energy gathering.
That mime-rapist has a gigantic black erection.

I was not expecting aliens to be like this. :c

My guess is it's related to this article:
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/solarsystem/features/titan20100603.html

But that's boring, so I'm going with announcing that Stargate SG-1 was actually a documentary and MacGyver kicks alien ass.

According to the NASA homepage,

http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2010/nov/HQ_M10-167_Astrobiology.html

there is to be a news conference on December 2nd, 2pm EST, to discuss "an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life". Science Journal is in on this, but have embargoed details until the conference.

While we are waiting for scientific facts, which I personally believe to be extraplanetary bacteria or similar single-celled organisms, let the speculation run rampant. Do we have a Tyranid invasion fleet orbiting Saturn? Have we found a Rosetta Stone made from artificial, extrasolar elements? Are the Goa'uld coming? Or have we found the proverbial mud-puddle we originated from and spread here via Panspermia?

Discuss and speculate!
I hope it's a discovery that allows for some advancement of our species. Maybe something to push the world out of it's current rut. Hopefully it doesn't spark some alien war though at the same time... x.x;
I'm hoping for space turkeys. Delicious, delicious space turkeys. Everybody will want to have one, we won't be alone in the galaxy anymore, and if it comes down to war? Free food! :D

At my middle school, we had a poster in the library that said 'Today's science fiction is tomorrow's science'. I feel so honoured to live in a time when this is coming true, to some extent.

You mean something like this?

Hahahahaha! :)

The whole alien civilization part would probably be what intrigues me the most. What are they like? Are they green, or blue? Are there cool spaceships? ;O
Large barnhouse-shaped ships, and they all worship the god of cranberry sauce. Oh! And they're all like.. blue, because they're alien.
