So, I've only tried a few free/freemium MMO's. I've been trying to get more into the MMO world, but I honestly lack the wallet size. I'd love to play something like TERA or TOR, but I just don't feel I should need to buy an engagement ring for a game I'm not even sure I'll like.

Anyway, any one here play any free MMORPGs that they feel like recommending?

Realm of the Mad God (Even though it's not the size of a typical mmorpg).

I'm personally looking forward to GW2 - it will be buy once to play (so not entirely freemium, but still no big commitment).

World of Tanks is also pretty good.

Spiral Knights is almost entirely free to play. The only difference paying money makes is that you can do stuff quicker. Gameplay is actually really compelling; sort of like a cross between Diablo and Four Swords Adventures. Plus, it's clockpunk. Everything is better when it's clockpunk. If the Nazi's had stuck to a clockpunk motif, I'd be able to grow a certain style of moustache without fear.

City of Heroes is also one I'd recommend. You won't be able to get one of the obscenely powerful builds without paying, but the vast majority of the content is available for free. The combat mechanics are pretty standard, and I've been having trouble finding people to play with on my preferred server, but all of this is mitigated by the fact that you can use the character creator to make a 1930s gangster who who shoots fire out of his hands because why the hell not.

Allods Online. I keep telling myself I'm going to look into it but never do, so I can't say much besides it exists.

Age of conan and Aion top the list of free mmo's imo. Both debuted as pay to play and their production shows it, especially at the early levels. Both are not as old as some of the other free to play like lord of the rings or city of heros.

Ditto Vindictus. I know it's one of the few MMOs wih an actiony yet deep combat system, but that's it. I know Lunar Templar is a regular on it, though, so let's hope he sees this thread.

I really need to try Vindictus again. The opening level is awesome.... and then they nerfed you. Starting the player out as a badass and then taking it all away almost randomly is such a bad design choice.

And I shall check out Spiral Knights!

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa.

Aion is free?

And then Atlas had a happy life.

Runescape is a great parody of an MMO, it'll start you off and if you can afford the membership, 5$ a month, its rather big.

Just don't die or you're fucked.

Dungeons & Dragons Online, while being a bug-ridden glitchfest, is still very entertaining and fun to play.

Lord of the Rings Online.
You can earn points by doing things called Deeds, which are chalenges, like kill x of x and expore all landmarks in x. And those points you can use to buy new areas and other stuff.

The free account comes with a lot of limitations though, so be warned. But you should give it a shot.

Here's a link to a guy who does reviews of free to play MMOs.
http://mmogrinder.net/
Though the first one he reviewed has closed down now so whether you want to see that or not is your choice.

Maybe he's recommending them because he thinks they're good? Maybe he's never watched Extra Credits?
What about being a little more thankful next time takes the time to recommend something rather than being so ungrateful?

Global Agenda is an FPS MMO that you might want to have a look at, Imagine a cross between Mass Effect and TF2.

I also second the Spiral Knights recommendation, just be warned it's a bit grindy at times!

I'm rather enjoying Champions Online (although I do have a subscription) - it's a superhero MMO mostly known for its very robust character creator.

I think that as of the latest patch, it effectively has no content off-limits to free players, and the only things you're really missing out on are the ability to colour your powers, (no biggie, usually) a good amount of cosmetic content (roughly half or so is available 'for free' to subscribers, the rest is paid-for for everyone) and the ability to make your own power combinations and builds (this one is pretty major)

Without the free-form character building system you're limited to so-called 'archetypes' that basically position themselves somewhere along the tank-DPS-support MMO trinity while emulating 'classic' superhero abilities. 'The Behemoth' and 'Glacier' are tanks, for example, being nigh-invulnerable bricks and ice-flingers respectively, while 'The Inferno' (fire-user) is a DPS archetype and 'The Radiant' is an angelic support type. There are more free and paid-for archetypes available other than those, of course, and cosmetics and powers are completely distinct. You can make a wispy behemoth or a robotic radiant, whatever.

Anything paid-for in the store you can technically grind for in-game through obtaining 'questionite' and swapping it for store credit on a sort of auction house type deal, but the exchange rates are pretty bad. Still, it's possible.

Not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination, but I find that the superhero themes makes up for a hell of a lot.

Man you have the oddest fixation on Extra Credits don't you? Those guys talk about a lot of games, I don't really see the point of trying to avoid every one of them.

Plus, how do you have any idea when someone recommends a game, they heard of it from them? ROTMG and World of Tanks are quite popular.

But I dislike Dungeons and Dragons?
How the hell do you expect them to know that?
