So I recently decided that I wanted to build myself a gaming PC, as I want one and everyone I have talked to said it was a far better deal to build one yourself. I have a budget of about 800-900 USD for this thing and was wondering if any of you gaming folk here would be able to help me pick some parts to put this thing together with.

at least you can get something good with that

(NOt trying to be an ass but gaming pc parts are pricey)

Try:
Lambdatek if you're in the UK, and Newegg if you're in the US.
Apart from that, I can say that building your own PC gives you MUCH greater knowledge about its inner workings, and means you become more familiar with its hardware capabilities, since pre-built PC's often have unwanted peripherals and that raises the cost...

Done.
They also have a ton of other bare bone kits.

What the hell are you smoking? You can build a good gaming PC for $600-$700. And I have done just that many times.
I think people say that just because they bought their 4000 dollar PC and so they try and justify it by saying everything else is shite.

Go for AMD if you are on a budget. It's not the very top of the line but its good enough for gaming and their parts uses less power so you can save a bit on the PSU.
Also it looks like AMD is staying with the AM3 socket for a while, which will mean that you can keep the mainboard and RAM when you upgrade the next time.

Sure an Intel/nVidia combo is better but if its just for gaming and looking up crap on youtube you might as well go for the cheaper solution.

If it fits your budget I would suggest a Phenom x4 955, a HD5870 (or 5770), a 500W PSU from Corsair, 4GB RAM (make sure its compatible with the mainboard) any cheap case and speakers, a nice headset with mic.

Also ASRock mainboards has made a nice feature called Instant Boot presented here by "George" and "HUGO"! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BucIjXZVxXo] Yeeeaah! And yes it works, I have it on my HTPC and it boots to windows faster than my TV takes to come on. About 8 seconds and Windows is on and ready to go. It's basically the windows hibernate function but it works better.

The Radeon 5770 is a fairly inexpensive, and good quality card made for budget performance. Usually around $150-170, and should last a while. Buy a second to crossfire whenever you need more oomph, and you're set for a long time.

What Graphics card to go with this?
Don't pay more than $100 for a graphics card. It's the easiest part to upgrade in a couple of years, and also the easiest place to save money. A mid-range card will still play any game just fine.

Doesen't Nvidia perform better with Intel, or am I mistaken?
Just a rumor made up by people who are timid about ATI. My laptop here runs Crysis on high with an intel quad core 2.0ghz and a radeon HD 4650 gpu. It *can* run on Very High for about 15 minutes before it gets lap frying hot.

PCI Express X4 (for physics or dual monitor)
Two PCI Express 2.0 x16
So CrossfireX (no SLI since it is Intel)

Yup. Living in Australia (where parts are much more expensive than the USA) I built a gaming PC for under US$900, which included a quad-core processor, 4GB of RAM and a 24" LCD monitor. Not hard to get it that cheaply if you buy wholesale and build it yourself.

All you need is a core 2 duo with reasonable clock speed, any old hard drive, a mobo that will work, 4 gb ram, video card with at least 512 mb of gddr3+ gram, any regular old case that isn't shit, a 500v ish power supply, and a couple blue and green LED fans. If you want, I'll make you a list on newegg because I've got nothing better to do and I get some sort of perverse pleasure in choosing computer parts.

I built my own 1000 dollar beast that will run basically anything for the next 5 years but yours would probably cost 600+, or more if you thought it was necessary.
If you could put together a list for me that would be great. Like I said I have about 900 dollars to spend here, and I would like something that I don't have to upgrade soon and will run games like Mass Effect, Fallout:New Vegas, and Star Craft well. So yeah, a list would be awesome :D
And by well I mean relatively high resolution with a smooth framerate.
