Ok, so I finally got my tax return in the mail today, meaning that I now have something from the government that says where I live, so I can finally update my state ID. Thing is, I have no idea what to do. I mean, I'm inclined to say that all I need to do is fill out a form that will confirmed that I moved, but since I'm now 21 I need an ID that doesn't have the "Under 21' stamped on it. So do I have to apply for a whole new ID now because of it? And what kind of proof I'm me do I have to bring to the DMV, and how many?

This is hard enough for me to figure out since the DMV website hasn't been really forthcoming with the answers I'm looking for.

Not sure how much it matters, but I live in Brooklyn.

The website looks pretty straightforward to me. Typically, they like you to have two forms of identification. Your social security card and birth certificate are the most commonly used forms. If you have something with your picture on it (like your under 21 ID that you no longer need), bring that too. It says to visit with the MV-44 form, but they usually have those for you to fill out while you're there anyway, so you don't have to print out and fill in their version.

If your old ID isn't expired, they may update it for you to the new version for free. I'm not sure how it is in New York, but I've lived in both Georgia and Florida, and both states allowed you one change of address on an ID card for free. With you no longer being under 21, your ID will simply not have the "Under 21" stamp applied to it. They're otherwise the same, so it shouldn't require the fee to be paid again, unless your old ID is expired.
