Hello, all!

I'm sure this has been asked before, but in the light of Fallout 3, I think it's worth asking again.

I'm completely new to the Fallout universe, and to Bethesda - somehow I missed these two monumental games, so I'm asking, which game should I buy (first) and why?

If you'r buying for console, Oblivion. No patching on the bug-ridden Morrowind.

If you're buying for PC, Morowind. Better game and half the price.

And just make sure you're getting GotY editions.

If you start with Oblivion, Morrowind will seem a lot harder and you might have problems getting into it. You should play them in the correct order. Also, Morrowind is the better game :).

if you have a pc get morrowind, the xbox version wasnt much good compared, if not, get the xbox version, its great!

generally i'd say start as early as you can in any series so you have a broader understanding of the universe/setting/themes etc, although i spent about 800 hours on oblivion and 600 on morrowind so i guess it depends how much time you have as well.

if you've only got time for one (they can both be completed in about 50 hours or so, you dont HAVE to spend as long as i did) then play oblivion, its prettier, newer and will connect to the rumoured Elder Scrolls 5 being released sometime in the future.

if you need any help playing either i'm fairly well travelled in both....

enjoy :)

Morrowind has a lot more depth, but is much slower paced and the console versions are terrible. I would say Morrowind unless you can find Oblivion for a low price.

If you're buying console, Morrowind, if you're buying PC, Morrowind. After you feel you can pull away long enough, THEN get Oblivion.

I love both games, they both do some fantastic things, Morrowind has less hand holding and it could be argued that it has more to discover.
Oblivion has much improved AI, graphics and physics. The enemies in Oblvion scale to your level, meaning you're never at a complete disadvantge against enemies, but you also lose that satisfaction in coming back to creatures that gave you trouble at a lower level and wiping the floor with them.
Morrowind doesn't scale to you with the exception of certain enemies.

I'd say you should deffinately get both, but maybe go with Morrowind first, as it does come before Oblivion.

Vs thread never end well >.> just saying.

But Morrowind, specially the GotY one, it just seems more fun than Oblivion to me.

I love both games, and own the PC and console versions of both.
Really, the only thing that hampers my enjoyment of Morrowind is knowing the joys of Oblivion's fast travel. Then again, fast travel also had a downside. While it allowed for MUCH easier movement, the world of Oblivion didn't have the same huge, epic feel as Morrowind.
Overall, I agree to get Oblivion if you want it for console, Morrowind for PC.

I would definitely suggest Morrowind. It's one of my favorite games of all time. Game play is great, story is great, music is great, leveling system is great, and you can play the thing four times through and still not manage to even find some of the factions. Also, Morrowind is about ten bucks for the game and both expansions.

I can't remember if morrowind actually scaled or not, but the scaling in oblivion can completely mess you up if you level because of some skill that is not useful in combat like security(lockpicking), speechcraft or the wrong magic skill.

Of course, there's a difficulty slider so you can easily fix it yourself but still.

If you get morrowind for PC you should look into some mods to make the faces look better. There's tons of different kinds of mods but that was the one thing that really improved my game experience.

Oblivion

Morrowind is outdated, and you'll probably never enjoy it after having played Fallout 3

I played Oblivion first on PC and I absolutely love the game. I got a new comp in Nov. went to install Oblivion, found the disc all scratched up. recently bought both Morrowind and Oblivion(again) when they came out on steam. $25 USD for both games and all expansions/DLC. Don't think the prices are still that tho.

I like the Elder Scrolls universe from Oblivion, so I tried Morrowind. Can't for the life of me get into it. Combat is hard, I don't even know if I'm hitting those little worm things in the beginning with my dagger or not. So idk, I suppose I should give it another chance.

Morrowind is vastly superior. It's an interesting world with distinct politics and graphical design. Game mechanics work well and the world is a joy to explore.

Oblivion is a generic fantasy RPG with broken mechanics, lack of charm or depth and generally and a world that's utterly monotonous.

Oh, Oblivion has better graphics.

You decide.

Morrowind is definitely the better game of the two, but after playing Oblivion and Fallout 3 it seems quite flat and lifeless in comparison.

Morrowind is far more immersive, it has a more fascinating and diverse culture, and it's generally got a fantastic feel to it. It also has a pile of online mods and expansions for when you get bored (which will take a long time) with the core package.

Oblivion, however, has significantly improved game mechanics (especially the combat) and is more accessible to a more casual audience. It's also prettier, if you care (you really shouldn't). I should also mention it's better balanced (in Morrowind you'll find yourself useless at everything at the beginning, and an unstoppable juggernaut so powerful it gets a bit boring later on).

Which one you prefer will largely depend on whether you value immersion, depth, and breadth with the potential for heaps of exploration, or a simpler and more streamlined but more technically proficient game.

Personally, I'd start with Morrowind. But, again, it depends on what you value out of your experiences. Either way, be prepared to lose some serious time.

I am a massive Oblivion fan and have never played Morrowind, so I would say Oblivion, purely because it looks better, the AI system is much better aad its a realistic (some would say generic but I disgaree)environemnt to play in. Also a modded oblivion adds untold amounts of hours to gameplay. I think I could only play morrowind if I modded graphics and AI first.
