I don't get what's supposed to be all that funny here, since that joke is rather old.
Other then that i see very little to be offended by. Sure, mandela can't defend himself here but everyone knows that so everyone knows what to think about someone who would dig out ancient jokes because the person the joke is about can no longer defend himself.

When i die, feel free to make jokes about my dead fat ass.

I don't know... I'm a fan of black humor, but this just felt vicious. I don't think that the intent was to say that he was a good but flawed man.
If the cartoonist wanted to do that, then I think even I could have come up with a better joke.

The context is important for a joke and I really need it this time around, because at this instant I would be at the level of saying that the guy would find a home at Stormfront.

Humor is subjective and political cartoonists sometimes try to be insightful more than anything, but this comic. IS. NOT. FUNNY.
People are missing my point. The bit about him being good but flawed is my personal opinion. No one is under any obligation to acknowledge that or agree. If you want to tear him to shreds, go ahead. It doesn't make a difference that he's dead. Like I said, the people close to him are a bit busy with their personal grief at the moment. They don't care what you think. If you're personally offended because you liked what he stood for, go ahead and argue in his favour. Someone's death isn't a "get out of jail free" card, where instead of making valid points you just get to shame someone's detractors for not living up to some dishonest, nonsensical convention of pretending the dead person was perfect for an indefinite period after they die.

Dude, if I walked in and called your mom a dirty skank like, three hours after she died, you'd probably be upset.

People just get sensitive about it soon after they've died, we kinda have a thing about not disrespecting the recently deceased. Especially if they did good things or things we liked.

A person does not become better just because he dies. If you did not feel empathy for him when he was alive you wont feel it when hes dead.
I can speak as much about a dead person as i do about a live one.

That being said, this particular cartoon is factually incorrect at best and should be called out as such.

Honestly, on this subject I think general social etiquette is applicable. Don't talk shit against someone unnecessarily. Bringing up constructive reasons for why you dislike a person is another thing. Being dead doesn't magically protect you from that.

Case of point: Margaret Thatcher.

Comedy is cruelty. Every joke is about someone else or something hurting.

Don't say it TO those affected by the death (friends/family etc), that's just tactless and entirely malicious. That'll cause emotional turmoil.

Feel free to talk badly about the dead if you're saying it to yourself or somebody who wasn't affected. The dead are past caring.

I don't really mind speaking ill/making jokes of/about the dead.

However I do have an issue with that cartoon, and its fairly simple: Why the fuck was this not made while he was still alive?

Because rather than it being a point of 'people need to have a closer look at the ones they consider heroes' it feels to me like hes using the fact he's dead to gain some ad revenue.
