This Cameron fella wants to send more troops to Afghanistan. Oh goody. The thing I dont get is why are Australian and British politicians so eager to please America, when the US didn't even help out the Commenwealth until they were directly threatened in World War 2?

Beats me.
Get your history from a box of cereal? The lend-lease act? American pilots in RAF squadrons? US yards building ships for Britain? Nothing?

All of which didn't apply to the commonwealth.

If the Lib Dems somehow wrangled it so Vince Cable is Chancellor, I'll be dancing in the street.
Gotta quote you mate and say that IS an interesting idea. Fingers crossed because Vince Cable is one politician I can actually trust and get behind.

Most of the cabinet is a joke - it is all run by the civil service and they won't let someone just walk in and make an utter fuck up of it so it doesn't matter one iota how "inexperienced" someone is. But the Chancellor (and maybe Home and Foreign secretary) really matter and it would not only be an incredible coup to have Cable at the table, it would be a fucking good idea.

George Osborne was just confirmed as chancellor I am afraid to say

um....I feel the need to tell you that the tories aren't gonna scarp that scheme any more (don;t think they ever were going to completely). They are going forth with the national scheme where all the universities will be given greater grants but have free rating of set financial costs for going to uni (they can pitch their fees). Even the most pessimistic perditions only put the fees rising by £5,000 and with teh greater ability for grants you should be ok....hope that put you at some ease
Actually...the Conservatives have stated in the past that they think it is "adequate" for places like Bristol, Oxford, Cambridge, Durham etc. to charge at least £20,000 a year - on the grounds that it will "discourage people who don't really want to go to university and end up doing Media Studies degrees, and will ensure that only those people who really want to be there, will".

But lol at the "only £5000" part!

That's a £8,295 university bill PER YEAR and just for TUITION.

So on a 3-year Undergraduate course, you complete your degree with £24,885 of debt. Add on at least £5000 a year in maintainance loan and so-on, and that's a total debt of around £40,000.

And people are expected to get decent jobs and pay this debt off, and move on to the housing ladder (MORTGAGES!) at the same time?

Feck, I struggle with the current cost of university & living. I would actually be forced out of my degree if fees rise.
IT could be worse....They could put them up by £30k if they wanted....

I'm not from Britain. Can someone explain why he's so bad?
Because it's cool to hate him and he went to Oxford (The best University here in the UK).
People think he is a 'posh twat' so they blindly hate him for no reason, they also compare him to Thatcher, even though he is nothing like Thatcher.

Yes, but that's like comforting a man who's just lost his house but telling him that at least he doesn't have to worry about paying his electricity bills anymore. It's something, but still not as good as having a house/ not getting fucked in the ass by rich Tory bastards and not being able to afford uni anymore.

I know I shouldn't but........Cambridge is better than oxford at some stuff e.g. medicine. And Cameron is hardly a blatcherite.]

EDIT: NEW DETAILS!!!

2356: More on the details of the coalition deal. The Lib Dems agreed to an emergency budget within 50 days and to Tory a budget reduction plan including £6bn in cuts to non-frontline services in 2010/11. The two sides also agreed a commitment to a replacement for the Trident nuclear missile system but the programme will be scrutinised for value for money

Indeed. People accuse the tories of class bias... when the people doing that are being that themselves. Judge him by his actions, not his party reputation.

On a personal level, Cameron's image is so carefully airbrushed and media-managed that I wouldn't be that surprised to find out he's not a real person and is actually an elaborate set of cardboard cut-outs.

I knew there was something off about him. Dammit, that actually makes sense.

People think he is a 'posh twat' so they blindly hate him for no reason, they also compare him to Thatcher, even though he is nothing like Thatcher.
Or alternatively, because you think his right-wing policies are going to rip apart social cohesion by undermining social projects such as youth centres and care for the elderly and disabled; because his plans for the economy simply do not make any sense; and because his party is still stuck in old, Thatcherite ways.

He doesn't have to be anything like Thatcher, but where the party still clings to similar ideals it makes little difference, as he has to get party backing on all legislation. Hence the problem with offering PR to the Lib Dems - Cameron was all for it, to get into power, but the backbenchers and other party members just said "no". Was only when they realised that Labour were seeing an opportunity that they capitulated to a referendum to decide whether the public wants and eventual reform.

In short, it's not all pop-culture and being "cool-to-hate".

Though the "posh twatt" does have some relevance when you consider where his tax-cuts were going to be aimed - at inheritance tax for the richest estates in the country. Basically, they have a history of supporting the rich and screwing over the poor (hence Labour's landslide victory after their last spell in power) which tends to do horrible things to the country both economically and socially.

Some people on this website are actually politically aware (and active) and disagree with the policies of the Conservative party, most particularly at this time. Please don't chuck us all in with the "Lol, shiny forehead, rich bastard" lot.

I hate him because for what he believes in, which is the same as Thatcher! Meaning lower class and Scottish will get fucked, he doesnt need scotland, he only won 1 seat here. The conservatives are responsible for a lot of pain in the past.

I am gonna throw this out there...It always comes back to this...If Scotland is so angry with British politics why doesn't it vote to leave the UK?

Indeed.

University is such a struggle to afford at the moment, particularly with limited job prospects (West Midlands) and absolutely no help from parents, and the pathetic Student Loans we get at the moment.

ANY rise is going to be a pain in the arse, especially if they implement it for *current* students. I would be seriously pissed off if I have to choose between:

1) Drooping out of 2nd/3rd year of my degree.
or
2) Getting in so much debt I'm never going to be able to afford my own home.

Hell, I'm a rarity (on the forums) in that I want kids before I'm 30. How is that going to be possible if I were to leave uni with between £40,000-£105,000 of debt?

Such policies are just undermining the educated, skilled, working generation of the future. Which is going to seriously suck for the country as a whole.

I am annoyed by this. That is all I really have to say.

...well, that and as if there was any doubt that he was going to end up the next PM, whether you agree with his party or not.
