Just general opinions, please, if you want to put in specifics could they be in

Doctor Who doesn't tend to be as strict with cannon as comic books do for example so you really don't need to know as much.

Let's be fair, a lot of the cannon-breaking occurred in RTD's stuff, and Moffat even breaks his own cannon. The old writers stuck to the cannon a lot better.
