Aw man, it's about freaking time, Gainax!

They're one of the few studios in Japan that still makes quality animation, so that alone makes me excited for this new movie. Add to that that the training wheels have been taken off - the story officially split from the original at the end of the second movie - and I'm ready to throw my money at this the first chance I get. Let us see what they can conjur up.

And Asuka looks intense, but I doubt she can top her performance in End of Evangelion.
You never know, she might be able to top it. With all this new animation and what she just went through, it could happen... but still, it's difficult. I also don't see Shinji doing much this movie with Unit-01.
I'd figure Shinji and Rei will take a bit of a back seat in the third movie, apart from maybe some introspective stuff here and there of them tripping in Unit 01. The rest of the cast will be busy trying to get them back, with Asuka, Kaworu, and Mari taking on the Angels, while simultaneously finding out new things about eachother. Should prove an interesting dynamic as well as some much needed character developement/motivation for Mari. Shinji and Rei will probably re-emerge at the end, ready for the fourth and final movie. Though the new movies have been really light on all the philosophical weirdnes of the original, so we'll have to see.

Aw man, don't say that! The thing I'm most interested in this movie is specifically Rei! Hopefully they don't pull crap like that, it'd really suck...

Hey guys glad to see my fellow escapists excited for this film. I'm excited how different it looks from he original, which draws my greatest question about rebuild. You guys think this alternate story is a a result or a possibility created by the events of end of evangelion/ or episodes 25/26, since they show alternate realities in those. I think it'd be pretty cool if that was the case since it would me the remake isn't really a remake.
That sounds terrible to me. Gives me the mind image of at the fourth movie's ending being told "it was all a dream" and then the rest of the movie being the ending of the original 26th episode.

End of Evangelion is just stupid.

I just finished watching the series (hated the last few episodes) and was wondering if these movies where worth watching. I must admit this trailer does look fucking awesome.

Gainax isnt making it FYI, they just own the company that does.

I wonder though, is this gonna end with a giant naked woman the size of earth growing a ------ on her forehead and then shinji spearing it like he did last time?

The movie end of Evangelion fixes the last episodes, and this new movie series has been pretty good so far.

What's this anime like anyways? I've watched a few eps and felt like cutting myself afterwards. Reviews from people who watched the whole thing are no different. Although they did still give it good scores.
I almost felt like cutting myself after watching the series ending.
And I was depressed for a few minutes after watching the movie that "fixes" the shitty ending.
But other than that, it's really awesome... if you can bare some daddy issues and some utter nonsense thrown almost at the end, but at least the battles and the animation are amazing.

It's the only way I see them giving the new characters their due screen time. Kaworu has entered the fray as a more determined and less gentle character then before. And unless they plan on having Mari add jack shit to the plot like she did in Rebuild 2, they're gonna have to put some meat to her character as well. And then we have Asuka who seems to be pushed forward as a reborn and crazed pilot. To me it seems like having these three together would make for an interesting movie.

And at this point we already kinda know Shinji and Rei, and what they're about. And it's not like we won't get to see them, just not in the physical world. [sub]btw I'm speculating my ass off at this point.[/sub]

Yeah, but I'm sure Gainax is overseeing the production like a hawk, making sure everything is ship shape. Plus, Hideaki Anno wrote the scenario, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto did the character design, and Shiro Sagisu provided the score (eventhough they ripped music straight from Kare Kano for the second movie, the lazy bastards). That's pure Gainax in my book.

ok, the trailer is a traitor.

the real question i have is, 'as some one who hated Eva to begin with, there anything in these remakes/retelling to make me change my mind?'
I would say the answer is yes. 1.0 you almost don't need to watch, since it's closer to a remastering than a remake, but 2.0 really improves on every sector. It makes the characters genuinely likable, eschews most of the pretentious religious crap and makes the story more coherent. Plus the animation is grrreat.
is Shinji still an intolerable little *****? or at the very least focus less on him? i kinda hated his ass with an unrelenting passion

wow I don't think I could have said it better myself.

I think the only way this would really interest me is if the opening scene was him being decapitated or something.

Remove Shinji and I'd give it another shot.

I never really got into Evangelion, although it seems like a really well written anime with a great universe and atmosphere.
I'll try plow through the first series during the weekend.
Otherwise, the trailer looks quite nice and the animation is fantastic, especially for the character movements.
Gosh I just remembered the first time I did that (also watched the movie after finishing the series), it actually left me in a dark mood due to all the mindfuck and depressing things that happen non-stop after a while.

I have yet to watch this remake though, might also dive into it this weekend, hehe.

Sums my feelings about the series up perfectly. Once I actually found myself laughing while watching EoE, because I despised all the main characters and was just wondering "What the hell were they smoking when they made this?"

Also, while the trailer is a load of garbage, I'm still excited to see this film. 1.0 I didn't like very much, but 2.0 was a real step up. The character I'm most interested in seeing is Rei, as in 2.0 she actually had a personality and I rooted for her. I really want to see what direction they're taking her.

I didn't mind 1.0, but it certainly kept a lot closer to the anime than 2.0. The second movie is where things really began to diverge and become more distinct. To be fair I think that was intentional too. Ease people in, thinking they are seeing a remake, but then make it something else entirely. By the end of the second movie we've completely jumped off the rails and are in a totally new endgame than in the anime, by the look of things.

Hah, yeah. Rei really was a surprise. I mean... it's Rei. She's supposed to brood, and be kind of a *****, and have no personality. But they actually had her character grow and develop a little this time. She actually got a personality, and I actually found myself rooting for her as well. Same with Shinji really. He actually grew some balls and decided to fight for a change. In 2.0 he actually fought that ribbon-armed angel himself, to try and avenge Rei, instead of just whining and letting his EVA go berserk. Like I said, I actually didn't hate Shinji and that is a massive improvement from anything else Evangelion-related :)

Always kind of had a weird relationship with this series. I wanted to like it, because it does have some neat ideas and imagery... but the show, and EoE just screwed things up so badly by the end that I couldn't. So here's hoping the movies keep going well, because I'm actually kind of liking it this time.

Well we see a lot of Shinji talking to Kaworu so I assumed he'd be put into confinement or something with perhaps only Kaworu allowed to see him, perhaps to manipulate him. This film is supposed to be darker though so I really hope they bring in the crazy mind-fuck stuff and philosophical things a bit more.

I think Asuka will be a bit traumatized by what she went through, especially since she lost (we presume) an eye. This happened because she chose to go so Rei could do her dinner, in part and it was also a time when she was opening up a little bit, so I think she'll definitely be angry and less open... especially since Mari wrecked Unit-02.

Like you said, hopefully this film will provide development for Mari but apart from that I wonder what they're gonna do with Rei and the plot in general really.

While he does retain some of his unbearable spinelessness in the second film, he also has a side he never had in the series. He seems genuinely content, is not whining all the time and seems to make an effort to find himself a place in the world. During the final battle he really grows a pair. But if you want to, you can just ignore him and focus more on the other characters.

For the best interpretation of the series I would recommend reading the manga version of Evangelion (if you're into it). It gives a LOT more insight into Shinji's character. He's a slightly different person and his angst is justified a lot better than in the original series. The manga version is simply better in all aspects: more consistent tone, actually quite good artwork, less of the pretentious bible garbage and more fleshed out characters. And the opening scene of EoE (you know the one I'm talking about) is done with better taste and in a way that builds Asuka's character.

It was never going to happen.

It was Gainax making fun of the fact that everyone knows they end their series on some massive troll.

I watched the original series and didn't enjoy it in the slightest, probably because I just couldn't get myself to sympathise with the characters. Especially Shinji, that whiny little prick. Are these movies any better in that regard?

Shinji is not nearly as insufferable in 2.0. Without spoiling anything, he actually gets off his arse and does something because he wants to, for once.

Yay.

On another note, my friend has this crazy theory where Rebuild is actually a sequel rather than a reboot. He cites the fact that the Lance of Longinus is on the moon from the beginning rather than it being thrown there midway through the series as proof. I've not heard of any official confirmation either way of this, but if it is true... well...
