BOOBS!

now that that's out of my system, I don't understand this game, mostely because it's in a different language. The nudity wasn't necessary, either.

I summed up the game for you guys.

Heavy Rain
Heavy Rain is a cinematic and evolving thriller from Quantic Dream, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Fahrenheit. Dealing with a range of adult themes, the game revolves around a sophisticated plot and strong narrative threads that explore a complex moral proposition. You assume the role of multiple characters, with very different backgrounds, motivations and skills, in a world shaped by Bending Storylines. A dynamic narrative design where your actions and decisions will shape your story.

Plot
The message of the game is how far you're willing to go to save someone you love. A serial killer who goes by the name 'The Origami Killer' is on the loose and you must try to find him. The reason behind the naming of the killer is that the man leaves an origami piece in the hands of his victims.

Gameplay
The game heavily uses QTEs (quick time events). Players are controlled with the R2 button to walk and the left-analogue stick to turn and look around. The face buttons, the right analogue stick and motion sensitive controls will be used for interaction. Players are able to bring up a bunch of thoughts by holding the L1 button and pressing corresponding buttons to say or do what they're thinking. These thoughts will sometimes blur, and selecting them at the wrong time will affect the character's reaction, such as saying something in the wrong way.

Action sequences, such as when the player is being attacked, play out as quick time events. Players will be presented with various symbols, requiring them to either press buttons, move the right analogue stick in a certain way, or shake or tilt the controller. Failure to execute these commands take the story along a different path, and certain mistakes will lead to a character's death. For example, in one scene, Norman Jayden is interrogating a suspect named Mad Jack when he starts to suffer from withdrawal symptoms and button prompts will show up. If he fails to take his drugs, he will be taken to a scenario in which he will have to escape from a car before it is thrown into a crusher, killing him. In scenes like these, a 'timer' scene is shown at the bottom of the screen, indicating how long the player has to escape from his predicament.

If a character dies, the game does not end, and play control switches to another character, with the events of the previous character's death affecting the story. If all four characters die, there is a proper conclusion to the story and the game ends prematurely.

The music fit so, so badly with the stuff going on on the screen. It's not supposed to be epic, it's supposed to be emotionally engaging, and that sort of "ohmyfuckthisisepic" soundtrack would have worked better for something like Mass Effect. And in terms of what's going on, you're essentially trying to track down a murderer, though it's a lot more complex than what I can remember off the top of my head and I'll be damned if I'm looking it up. They're putting a lot of effort into getting you emotionally involved in the story, and if that means they end up sacrificing gameplay (which, as in the trailer, is a long string of quicktime events), then at least it's moving into potentially unfamiliar territory.

Ahh. I can see what the game's going for with the innovative controls. Plus it looks pretty as shit. I'm fairly interested now.

I've always wanted a cinematic game like that. It looks so cool. Well, minus the nudity and all but it did look really cool. I have to get a PS3 for this...

I heard the first impressions were mixed. About how you could play for hours and nothing would happen. One Dutch site Gamekings.tv, said that it was more like a book than a movie or game. I consider them a reliable source since they really speak their mind about all games.

PS: link for everybody who can speak Dutch. [link]http://www.gamekings.tv/index/videos/preview-heavy-rain/[/link]

So, bottom line is - this game is going to be an interactive movie, of sorts. You cant controll the character directly, but what they do and where they go is determined by how good you are in quick time event sequences.

Oh joy, QTE fest...
Shut your face. I'm tired of hearing people comparing it to a mess of Quick-Time Events. You can directly control the character. The QTEs are used mainly for choice-making. Until you hit points at which such choices are made, you can control the character directly. Even in the QTE moments, not all of them are "Quick! Pick one!" moments.

Check your information before forming opinions, please.

OT: I thought it was kind of old news that Heavy Rain would have nudity? Still pumped for this game either way.

Hmm, this game looks erm... dull? The plot sounds fairly average, and in the wonderful words of someone else on this thread, the game play looks like "sims on crack"

It sure is awful pretty though. It's just that I had no fucking clue what was going on.

I'll stick to MW2 thanks.

Some new footage of the cinematic game Heavy rain, has appeared on youtube. Only problem is that it is polish speaking and contains some nudity. When I say nudity, I dont mean a sideboob. You have been warned.

OMG! That scene where he was deciding on whether or not to drink the orange juice! SO EXCITING!

Seriously, this game has "We don't know the difference between 'mature' and 'banal'" written all over it. For all of their talk about the story being deep and compelling, they haven't produced a single thing so far that points to the story having the slightest bit of merit.
The problem with a game like Heavy Rain, a game that is so heavily centered around storytelling and choices, it's very difficult to show a scene without ruining the story itself. If they talked too much about the story, then a lot of it is spoiled since it's a murder mystery surrounded by your choices of what you are doing. And Heavy Rain is 100x more "mature" than most games out there, which by their definition of "mature" means buckets of blood, swear words, and boobies. While tieing a tie for your boss doesn't seem that great, it brings you that much closer to the character your playing, making you believe that you are him, that you are working for their interested, and that you will be sorry if they die.

I'm trying to look at nothing on Heavy Rain now so nothing will be spoiled for me. Personally, I am extremely excited for Heavy Rain as it could be a completely unique game with a completely unique style. So, from now on, no more watching/reading Heavy Rain articles!

Reminded me a lot of Shenmue [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenmue], especially the QT bits. And what was with the Johnny Mnemonic [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Mnemonic_(film)] "cameo"? ;) I like the interfaces; simple designs that make it easy to see what you can do without taking you too far out of the experience.

Indigo Prophecy was a pile of mediocrity so I'm more than skeptical about this game. I don't find it very fun or engaging to play a whole game based on quick time events.

Indigo Prophecy ended up feeling like the gameplay took a back-seat to the story. And I mean faaar back.. Like the very last row in the whole room. and it got the crickety chair with one leg shorter than the others.

I love a good story, in fact I hate shallow games without any story; but if you want to neglect the gameplay to give an epic story then just make it into a goddamn animated movie. As it stands, Indigo Prophecy was essentially a movie you had to press buttons to watch, and Heavy Rain looks like it will be the same. I do not like hammering my keyboard/controller or doing some arbitrary actions in the game all for the sake of seeing more and more cutscenes.
