A personality.

Or, failing that, Beyond Good and Evil 2. :|

Alright, alright, let's see... a proper levitation device.

A flintlock pistol, Have it replace the bow and use it to cause explosions, hit switches, ranged combat. Have it shoot various kinds of bullets to solve different puzzles. Yeah it's a knock off of the bow, but it would still be cool.

Have something like the Ocarina of Time that effects say just the dungeon your in to raise platforms, turn enemies into children or old people, and other things.

A massive axe acquired in some sort of forest temple, that is used for combat and cutting down trees and pillars for various puzzles.

I hope the next Zelda, every item is actually useful in combat so it won't go the way of the Spinner. Used twice and then forgotten.
This is would be pretty damn awesome too.

How about this, the ability to jump MANUALLY? (Excluding any of the GBA games of course, Roc's Cape ftw)

Bringing back the magic wand from the first game would be pretty cool, especially if they brought back the book of spells that allowed the magic projectile to become fire once it hit something.

A new shield made of adamant or something similarly tough, which allows you to surf in lava or other hazardous liquid.

A 3D version of the Roc's Cape. You still could not jump straight up, but could glide with every leap like with the Deku Leaf as well as keep your back protected against attacks. Too, I believe a late-game Link would look more accomplished with a regal blue or silver cape similar to Ganondorf's, particularly when riding Epona.

Speaking of Epona, some kind of item to let you take direct control of her even while not riding her. Link would no longer require a transformation to speak with animals for hints or a situational partner to hit switches or tag-team enemies with. Maybe even some character development; horses can be kind of charming in that they're loyal like dogs.

Rocket propelled grenade launcher!

The Monkey Staff is actually and excellent idea for a Zelda game, but it would probably be overpowered.

I can't think of anything that would work, though...

Gloves that give Link a stronger punch. A staff that shoots out light that can activate switches, let you see in the dark, and blind/stun all enemies. An orb that creates a good copy of an enemy and certain other objects. And I liked the idea of combining items like the bomb arrows. Maybe an expanded form of that.

Love the Monkey Staff idea! And it seems exactly like the sort of thing to be put in a Zelda game. Hugely applicable for puzzles and combat. Love it.

Some sort of personal glider or blimp definitely, jump of cliffs and go soaring over Hyrule Field. Or, more in keeping with established traditions, it could simply be a pet cuckoo, which give it other uses as well ( remote control to reach small places, bait for enemies, etc)

The Zelda series does need some serious innnovations on the item department.

Stopwatch--You click it and for a limited time everything stops. There would have to be obvious limitations, but I think it would be useful in fights and puzzles.

Bird Call--Calls a large bird for you to ride on, I imagine it would be like the horse or boat.
I was looking at my old forum posts and I came across your comment. I have to say I got a good chuckle out of reading your idea for the Bird Call. It looks like they heard you. Maybe you can use that power of yours to have them put your stopwatch and my Monkey Staff idea in the next game. Cheers.

The large hardon collider
Please tell me that was a typo.

How about some Japanese style weapons like Shuriken or Kunai? Or at least stuff that would actually be considered a weapon in standard culture. Killing stuff with a boomerang, really?
