http://kotaku.com/5692552/rumor-biowares-new-mass-effect-is-a-multiplayer-spin+off

The BioWare project teased earlier today by Spike TV's Video Game Awards is not an early look at Mass Effect 3, according to a development source, but the multiplayer-focused Mass Effect spin-off currently in the works at BioWare Montreal.

That Mass Effect game is not a massively multiplayer online version of BioWare's sci-fi RPG series, but a game that's designed to appeal more to the Call of Duty market, according to that source. We're told to expect player progression in the vein of Activision's wildly popular online shooter along with some sort of single-player component that does not feature Mass Effect's Commander Shepard in a leading role.
For those that know the ME universe Ashley Williams Grandfather fought a guerilla campaign to defend a colony from a Turian invasion during the first contact war. A game set during that would be eighteen kinds of awesome.

A CoD-like Mass Effect game, with online shooter components?
This... could be interesting. And successful.
If they do it right.
Plus, first contact war... Turians... Humans... sci-fi...

Bah, I'm not a fan of the idea. Smacks too much of the reason for ME2's backslide into 'thermal clips'.

Mind you I'm not much of a shooter fan, but I still think that if they wanna make this into a Mass Effect shooter, since it'll be human-centric, then because ME canon states that there are very few human biotics, they'll most likely cut them entirely. They might have Tech classes but again they'll be limited, so we're left with the soldier class stretched out into another game.

Like we don't have a million of those already.

I'm not against a multiplayer shooter set in the Mass Effect universe.

I am against comparing it to Call of Duty. Please let it be very different from that monstrosity.

Ehhhh...

Not sure how I feel about that.

I mean, a shooter based around an alien invasion? Come on Bioware, surely you're above that sort of dross. And the Mass Effect universe doesn't strike me as being a good fit for that sort of thing. I wouldn't be too thrilled to see all that complexity boiled down to, "Oh no, the Turians are attacking! Send in the rugged space marines!".

...

Then again, it is Bioware. So they get the benefit of the doubt.

Exactly... chances are, the kind of people who play Call of Duty are not the kind of people who would like Mass Effect... and trying to have it appeal to people who don't care about the franchise to begin with sounds like the worst of both worlds. And please, guys, don't quote me saying how you're a fan of both games... I know that there are some exceptions.

A third person online shooter with heavy emphasis on cover based/strategic fire combat, set on fictional planets where humans battle aliens...

So Bioware is developing Gears of War 3?

We don't need ANOTHER First Person Shooter littering the consoles, especially one that's just a spinoff...

If this doesn't go well it could will be very very bad for the Mass Effect franchise. I thought Mass Effect was one of the best games ever made and I'm quite liking ME2. A black mark like this on a such a steller if short record would almost break my heart.

I will remain optimistic. Bioware is a great developer this game has the potential to help flesh out the intriguing Mass Effect universe.

I'd have to agree 100%. I don't mean to sound condescending here but Mass Effect is quite a bit more intelligent than CoD. Some people like that in a game, others don't. Trying to appeal to both camps is probably a waste of time. The ME fans will be annoyed that it is too shallow on the mythology (I couldn't think of a better word there) or the CoD fans will be bored with all the exposition.

I think the reason they compared this project to CoD was because CoD is the biggest FPS franchise out there at the moment.

Eh. I don't really play COD games. I know I should because my buds say they are great, but I just can't get into the multiplayer thing.

But I have no problem with Bioware doing this. Just so long as they still do ME3, I'm good. I don't care if they are doing it to make more money. I like the company. Aside from the DLC, they make games I love playing. If they think putting out something like this will boost their bottom line, then I'm all for it.

*sigh*

I wait longer and longer for some kind of DLC to be made for Ashley/Kaiden after the Liara fans got their fix and instead of doing a simple DLC to please part of the fanbase that they have ignored for so long, Bioware go ahead and make a whole new game.

I've got hurt feelings.

Okay but seriously, a first contact war thing could actually be pretty cool. Just as long as there is a reference to Shanxi and General Williams, that would be pretty cool.

I don't know. I'm not really a COD kind of gamer. Regardless, I'm sure it may come out alright.
