On the hair issue (and combat practicalities aside), I'm wondering if it's down now primarily because Bioware have finally managed to make some decent female hair models? Miranda in ME2 was an improvement on the ME1 models, but it still wasn't great...

This thread is very rapidly devolving into mindless flaming, people bashing Ashley, people bashing Kaiden in response and saying that Ashley is awesome half of the posts aren't even on topic anymore...I think that we might need a lock here.
No, I think it's just people expressing their opinion on a picture for which their opinion was asked. In contrast, anything you seem to have said in this thread seems to stem from you taking issue with people who don't agree with your sentiment.

As for me, I still think it looks like crap. She has a derp face in that image, and it looks her titty armor is gonna fall off.

But go ahead and talk about how much this thread has derailed. Really, the people commenting on an the image that is the focus of the thread obviously don't know what the thread is about.

She was in one of those ME3 game betas uploaded to YouTube. I recognized her immediately, so the hair doesn't impede my interpretation of her.In my eyes it signifies that time has actually passed.
I like the fact that she has armor. It was a bit strange to me that the majority of squadmates in ME2 wore clothes in combat.

That's the focus that Bioware has nowadays. Your party characters need to stand out, so you can't change their armor anymore.

I believe this informative illustration settles the matter on why ME3 should in fact have flat chest body armour.

on a serious note, she doesn't look like Ashley one bit. Not that it matters, unless her personality has changed a lot.

Do people here not play Female Shepard? Ash's armour looks almost exactly like Shepard's N7 armour, except that Ash's designation is S1, and she wears Spectre blue rather than Alliance Marine grey.

I was going to post the same thing.

Anyway, so much for 'Ash will only have her hair down while in her casual outfit'. Unless she's weird and that *is* her casual outfit.
That would have been really cool if she had her hair down in casual and up in combat, but I can't blame Bioware anymore than I can complain about them not moddelling full pressure-suits for when your squad is in a near vacuum environment in ME2. It's a minor detail that would have been a pain to add and not really accomplished much other than a few select people who know about the dangers of vacuum exposure going "that was a nice touch."

It is rather...tight fitting.
To be far its always tight fitting, male and female. Male and heavy armor just tends to be bulkier. She looks better, though I still prefer the ME1/2 model, looks more like a female marine like she is supposed to be. That being said, its just my personal nit pick.
Well, the armor was always tight fitting. On Ashley, Liara and female Shepard as well as the male characters with humanoid physiques, so it's hardly a new thing. I actually kind of like Ashley's armor, in fact I like it quite a lot.
While sex appeal is still present without a doubt, it's still a notable improvement over the blue spandex outfit that we've seen previously. This at least actually screams 'I am entering a battlefield, watch out 'cause I can kick your ass' which is what I've always associated with Ashley anyway.

I don't mind Ashley being sexy, after all there was never a point where I didn't consider her 'sexy', she's my favorite female character in Mass Effect and owns the record for 'longest running consistent love interest' as well. I kind of like the way they've managed to blend 'sex appeal' and 'practical' into one thing. My problem previously had always been that Bioware seemed to decide that 'sexy' was more important then Ashley's actual role as a soldier. The fact that all her male counterparts (Kaidan, Garrus, Vega) are all seen in heavy armor holding guns and Ashley's in a blue spandex outfit thrusting her hips seemed to imply that 'sex appeal' was all Ashley was worth to Bioware.
The fact that this picture exists is evidence that while Bioware have still made changes to Ashley physically with intent to give her additional sex appeal, at least they haven't forgotten that she's also a soldier and a fighter.
I can handle Ashley being confident and sexy, I wouldn't be able to handle objectification and exploitation like they did with Miranda. Fortunatley this picture gives me reason to believe this is not the case.

I mean sure it's still a drastic leap from her original design, with her long hair and armor closer to female Shepard's she looks less like a standard soldier and more like a superheroine. Like Wonder Woman in Space.
But hey, all the character designs seem to be heading down the path of 'rule of cool' rather then being grounded by 'normal' armor designs. So with that in mind I can live with form fitting armor and long hair into battle because frankly, she still looks pretty badass.
Plus, she is a Spectre. Not really a 'marine' anymore.

I guess what I'm saying is, I'm happy after seeing that picture. Fans reacted and now Ashley has been given a suit of stylish and sleek and very deadly looking combat gear. While the 'boob plate' thing irks me somewhat, it's not nearly enough to actually make me mad. Especially when you consider it's still miles ahead of the 'iconic casual outfit' design.

Tits.

They Sell Well.

Does this suprise you after Barbie won the popularity contest?
Only because all the others deviated much more form the original default; why do you think there was all the furore about her hair colour?

This.
Although I don't have a particular problem with her new hair style and make-up (nevermind that using it during the end of the universe is rather odd), she looks nothing like Ashley in ME1/ME2...

I don't think this looks much like her from the previous games and quite frankly the slightly tarted up style seems to go against her utilitarian no nonsense army grunt vibe from before.

Willing to roll with it though if we see a sweet new screenshot soon of Kaiden looking like space Lorenzo Lamas.

See above for example of modern armor that is built specifically for women in ways considerably less silly than the Mass Effect-style armor.
Whatever, it's far less gratuitous/embarrassing/revealing than the Greek Muscle cuirass, it has nipples -.-
You claim that the aesthetics of pre-modern (most of them) and post-modern is "unisex". The there a few reason why I can think that. For one, it's far easier to make the armour and as warfare has advanced, the need for symbolism and aesthetics is no longer there. The majority of medieval armour have a story behind it and it acts as a primitive form of IFF.

Today, soldiers are fairly bland. The only real way to tell the difference between countries/factions is by the flag or the gun that they are carrying.

Do you want ME to be Realistic? Are you kidding?!?! Both sexes in the game are insulting in real life and paint a gender type.As far as I'm concerned, ME style armour is no different than wearing a corset with no exposed areas.

One question I always have when I see a character in a suit of armor like that is, how do they fit in it? Is it pieced together? is there a zip up? I mean it always looks like it was almost painted on. I don't know maybe I'm thinking to hard on this.

Her nose, chin, and jawline look different. But that's just nitpicking. She looks good. So do Shep and Liara.

But my story will have Kaiden along for the ride. Ashely... is gone. So it really doesn't matter, unless I decide to do another play through with her around.

At this point it'd just feel weird to start over and keep her.

The humans in Mass Effect have always been a boring bunch. Ashley, Kaidan, Miranda, the lot. Bring on the aliens!

Given the choice I would have ended the lives of all the humans so that they stop stealing screen time from my aliens, however Kaidan still stands. I will end you Kaidan.
