In the early days of the new millennium, everyone had a sense that a new era in human achievement had begun. People looked forward to the start of a digital age, an age where science would bring about all the answers of the universe. Things were going to be streamlined, simpler and all the data of the world would be at our fingertips.

Until Alpha was born.

The first sign that the twenty first century would not be normal began with the birth of a child the UN later code named Alpha, in reference to it being the first of things to come. The child apparently displayed unusual mental readings when taken to the doctor for a normal doctor's appointment by the child's parents, eventually discovering the child could move objects with its mind, read thoughts and a multitude of other abilities. Once the press got wind of the story, it became the biggest headline the world had ever known.

Something neither science, nor religion could explain.

Locked away in a lab, Alpha's story soon became lost, considered an individual phenomenon. Then other cases started popping up, not just of children, but of adults suddenly gaining strange abilities and powers they had never known about before, as if someone had decided to throw on a switch inside of random people, giving them abilities beyond those of the average person.

Fear spread quickly throughout the world, as many of these people had no idea of what was happening to them or how to control their abilities. The army and police were called in, rounding up those afflicted with the 'psychic disease' and putting them in heavily guarded makeshift prisons. Overall, an approximate total of 500,000 people are infected with powers. This event became known as the Infection.

The source of the powers and reasoning of who and why received them is unknown. Deciding that the best thing to do would be to lock them up until a sense of control is established, the UN decided to use the one place on earth that would not be in danger in case of an uprising or attack by psychic users. Antarctica.

The former research base was quickly converted into a prison, with some psychics eager to be locked away, while others resist and escape capture. The world's reaction continues to be mixed, a grand majority of people still claiming fear and a want to be safe from those now infected. The governments of the world bow to the people's choices and by the year 2012, the Antarctic Psychic Facility holds 80% of the world's psychics.

You are one of those infected...or perhaps you see it as a gift. Being one of the more controlled psychics you find yourself selected for a special program, one that would have you facing off against your own kind in exchange for your freedom?

Formerly a research post, the UN converted it into a prison in order to hold those infected with abilities. The facility is an uncomfortable, depressing place, with armed guards at every corner, always watching. The most dangerous and uncontrollable psychics are kept in a separate wing, under constant sedation in order to keep their abilities in check. Inmates are given free time throughout the day, mingling in one central ?courtyard? where books, food, and entertainment is available. The younger psychics are given schooling, while the older ones usually train to keep their abilities under control. No one ever attempts to escape, as there is nowhere for them to run to if escape does happen.

Under the control of the P.D.I

Sustained - A power that is constantly active and cannot be shut off, such as a constant flame on the skin or mind reading. Some can be automatically activated, like a defense mechanism or an instinct, by touching something, looking at someone/something, etc. such as electrocuting anything you touch, swapping bodies when you kiss someone. These abilities tend to be more dangerous, as they are uncontrollable but are uncommon amongst psychics. Those with these abilities are often heavily sedated.

An example of a sustained ability

Activated - A power that needs to be triggered, such as telekinesis or changing physical form. The most common type of ability and the most controllable, there are few people with these abilities that are sedated.

An example of an activated ability

Psychic - A term normally phrased for those with the powers of the mind, it is now used to refer to all of those who have been infected with abilities of any kind. Coined after it was discovered that all those who gained abilities suffered from a powerful headache beforehand. Another term commonly used would be infected.

The Infection - The event that took place from March 13th, 2002 ? June 11th, 2002 when approximately five hundred thousand people were suddenly infected with abilities. While infections continue to occur, this was the highest amount of recorded infections in such a short period of time.

P.D.I - The international government agency in charge of monitoring the Antarctic Facility and capturing rouge psychics. Stands for Psychic Defense Initiative.

Alpha - The first recorded psychic, held a large amount of abilities in its mind. Real name, age, sex, unreleased. Current whereabouts unknown.

I am looking for 4-5 writers who are willing to make the commitment of consistent, well written posts. I am not making a standardized character sheet to be handed in, instead looking to see what will be handed in. Information that must be included is your name, age, physical appearance, background, and a description of your ability. Anything extra is your choice.

Please, read through the description of events I have provided. If you try to make yourself a dangerous badass who took out 100 guards with his mind blast, I?m not even going to bother. Your character is selected for this program because they are considered low risk and controllable. Not that your character has to be weak or that you have to be a boy scout, but you can?t be an all powerful god killer.

Really nice concept. I'd like to get a reserve for a special role, since I won't be able to put that much time into this, but I do want to be part of it.

I'll talk to you about the character. Looking forward to this! :D

I want to join so much right now, but I know I wouldn't be able to give it all the time and attention it quite obviously deserves.

It makes me disappointed really, something with so much effort put in not being graced with my participation, but this is how time conspires against us. Shame...

I'll read this thread, and be awaiting almost absolutely assured and alliterative awesomeness anyway.

Awesome. I was looking for more RPs to join and yours is now one of them. I have plenty of free time since I'm a high school student so I'm on almost on a daily basis and I excel in writing these kinds of stories. I would like to reserve a spot while I try to brainstorm a character. This may take a while but I'll try to get it to you tonight or tomorrow after school.

I'm definitely interested and would love to get involved. Out of curiosity, would our characters be issued weapons or equipment during hunts or would they be forced to totally rely on their powers?

Uniforms and communication devices would be given, with weapons and other equipment being issued depending on your ability

This sounds very tempting... I am rather busy at the moment though so I'll have to think about this... I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

I'm definately interested in joining this now that I finally have a bit of time on my hands. For the information on the character, do you want that PMed to you, or posted in this thread? Just curious. In any case, I'll start trying to write up my character.

Alright, let's give this a go.

Name: Elphaba Johnson

Aliases: Elphie, High Priestess

Age: 28

Description: Elphaba looks quite like an average woman. Though she is rather slim as well as a little short she has a strong and proud barring that makes her seem a little 'larger then life'. Her face is more angled then rounded giving her a striking visage. Elphaba has dark brown curly hair that she normally keeps cut no longer then her shoulders and brown eyes.

Power: Elphaba has named her ability The Tie of Spirit Between Chosen. She has the ability to sense the presence and location of other Psychics. Stronger Psychics can be detected from farther away. In addition, she can detect uses of activated abilities as well. Activated abilities also tend to leave a lingering feeling for a time where they are used while people with sustained abilities can sometimes leave a trail that Elphaba can follow.

Elphaba can also tell the difference between psychics because each one has a unique 'energy' though she has hidden this aspect of her abilities from the P.D.I. Strangely some items owned by Elphaba have shown a minuscule amount of resistance to psychic powers though she claims that it is due to perfectly normal magic. When in the Antarctic Psychic Facility she often wears a special veil that she made which, she claims, suppresses her power that otherwise 'just becomes a bother after a while'.

Background: Elphaba was born in Boston, Massachusetts to a pair of Wiccan middle-lower class workers. When she grew up she deeply embraced her religious heritage and joined the coven that her parents belonged to. Elphaba was 18 when the infection occurred and her powers developed about a year later.

While science couldn't explain the phenomenon Elphaba felt that she could. The 'psychic' powers were simply the manifestations of magic within those chosen by the Gods, and Ephaba was ecstatic to be one of the chosen. However, she knew well the fear of the masses so she kept her own nature hidden from those she didn't know; not difficult considering the nature of her powers. Elphaba's family and coven didn't necessarily all agree with her statements but the did help keep her secret.

However, when Elphaba was 22, attending University of Massachusetts Boston for a sociology degree, she was swept up in the pursuit of a criminal psychic. Elphaba used her ability to help the P.D.I. catch the criminal but despite that had to be taken as well.

Elphaba was kicked around several holding locations before the Antarctic site was established. Elphaba has been there since becoming something of a model resident and a bit of a cornerstone of the 'community'. Elphaba did everything she could to cooperate with and help both the guards and inmates. On several occasions she was taken to other places to help track down (nonviolent) rogue psychics due to her ability and excellent record.

Elphaba has garnered quite a lot of trust with the staff and inmates, even starting a small coven of her own among inmates which she is high priestess of.

However, Elphaba is not quite what she seems. While Elphaba cultivates a reputation as an honest, dutiful, rather simple religious enthusiast she is in fact cunning and ambitious. She has developed the opinion that the 'chosen' are destined to rule over the world (for humanity's benefit of course). She helps the P.D.I. only to gain their trust and to gather more chosen to where they can unite. In her view normal humans are too controlled by fear to achieve the true greatness that humans are capable. Elphaba is very secretive though and has only reviled these plans to her closest confidants.

Elphaba's favorite music is anything by Bon Jovi, and she is still an avid follower of Boston sports teams; particularly the Red Sox.

And that is that. Any constructive criticism (or whatever)?

Out of curiosity, will there actually be any snow-motorcycles around the facility or is that just for the picture?

Name: CJ
Age: 27
Description: CJ is fairly tall with short black dreads. He has medium brown skin with a muscular build. He also wears black gloves with circular disks on the back of them.
Powers: Energy asorbtion and displacement. CJ can channel any form of energy and displace it back to anything he touches. He can also store energy inside his own body to give himself a "boost" increasing his own metabolic processes to extreme levels thereby letting him heal himself or others with relative quickness. Bio-energy for some reason is extremely easy for CJ to absorb to the point that even being near a normal person their energy will become drained. Unfortunately, his ability is sustained and he has to wear special gloves and inhibitors in order to prevent himself from taking other people's energy.
Background: CJ was the classic womanizer. He had every girl he met wrapped around his finger. Just by looking at a girl he could have her weak at the knees. Every girl anted him and every guy wanted to be him. He had everything he wanted out of life. But then he became infected. At first he thought that simply his "game" was stepping up and everyone else couldnt keep up. Many of the girls he was sleeping with showed signs extreme signs of fatigue and many others said that they felt light-headed after touching CJ. Then, one night CJ's powers fully manifested themselves. After playing a tiring basketball game, CJ went to kiss one of his floozies and accidentally asorbed all of the energy out of her body instantly killing her. In the mass hysteria that followed, CJ's second ability manifested as he calls it "force lightning" hurting several others. After several failed attempts to live with his new found curse, CJ turned himself in to the PDI and lived in a self-imposed exile.

Alright, first time in an RP here, so I might be a little unfamiliar with the local idiosyncracies. That said, here goes.

Name: Dr. Tobias Calvin

Age: 41

Power: Tobias is both telepathic and telekinetic. Neither power is particularly strong - his telepathy is easily blocked by anyone aware of it and can mostly only glean surface thoughts, and is impossible to switch off. It should be noted he cannot send messages via telepathy, only receive them.

His telekinesis., meanwhile is only able to lift a small amount of weight, approximately seventy pounds, and strike with a similar amount of force - painful, but nothing compared to a trained fist fighter. However, Tobias has extremely fine control over the ability, it being as familiar to him as his own hands now. While he needs to see the target in order to use it and cannot, for example, pinch off nerves or arteries, he can poke unprotected eyes, grab the ankles of running men, and strike multiple places simultaneously.

Physical Description: Tobias or as he prefers to be called, Doctor Tobias Calvin has a bit of a way of catching the eye. Between the unkempt, shaggy graying hair and full beard, the sunken, wild eyes, and his lanky gauntness, looking like skin stretched taut over bones, he is not a sight you'd soon forget. Despite getting on in years a bit, he still walks with a straight back and seemingly boundless energy.

History: Tobias Calvin was born in Los Angeles in 1971, the child of an overbearing lawyer who pressured him from a young age into excelling and becoming a 'respectable member of society'. To that end, he attended numerous prestigious schools, finally graduating with an M.D. from Johns Hopkins, specializing in Neurosurgery. For the next four years he practiced with respect and some distinction - first as an intern, then a surgeon himself - until April 5th of 2002, when he collapsed while preparing for surgery. Examination showed no cause, and it was put down to stress. He was given a week to rest and recuperate. During his 'vacation', he discovered his telepathy during a quiet dinner with his then-finacee when he began responding to her before she spoke. Over the next several days, he found himself catching surface thoughts of those around him. He checked himself into a mental help facility for diagnosis. He spent a month at the facility, slowly devolving into insanity. Not over the constant hum of thoughts in the back of his mind, no, it was the sheer impossibility of actually being psychic. Being insane made sense, but psychic powers were on the same level as magic. The cognitive dissonance of being a psychic who did not believe psychics existed caused a mental breakdown.

During this breakdown, he was picked up by P.D.I., and over the next ten years assisted them in attempting to learn the truth behind the infection. Despite being somewhat unhinged, Tobias is a helpful if occasionally rude patient, only occasionally screaming for silence. Antipsychotic drugs have proven effective in managing his mental condition, however they also mute his powers. Due to his instability, he has been on a low-level dose of it for several years now, and it is possible that his powers will prove more potent now should he be taken off the drugs.

Thoughts?

Well, your post is quite well written and you seem to understand the concepts here better than most newcomers I've seen (And oh have I seen many) so I think you're on the right track. :)

Good sheet, minor spelling/grammatical errors but nothing to really worry about.

Name:Corrin Renaud; aka Cory, Cor

DOB: June 18, 1994. 18 years old.

Physical description: 5'7.5" Short, fine, dark brown hair. Light blue eyes. Lean, wiry frame; lanky adolescent. Thin jaw, runner's build.

Known psychic manifestations:
*Sustained electrosensitivity; sustained awareness of intense power sources, surges, sinkholes, or distinct absences thereof.
*At least three separate occurrences of electrokinesis, one unintentional, two activated, described by the infected patient as "conducting electricity without it hurting".
*At least one occurrence of electric discharge as reactionary reflex; this manifestation's status as sustained or activated is currently unknown.

Patient background:
Corrin is the son of a neurosurgeon working at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Before Infection occurred, he was average and healthy, a participant in his school's track team, and a smart young scholar interested in medicine. He occasionally volunteered at the hospital his mother works in, helping out with pediatric supervision, entertainment, or physical rehabilitation.

In the summer of 2010, after dealing with a persistent migraine for about a week, Corrin asked his mother what could be causing his headaches, but as even a typical migraine's specific cause eludes medical science, the best she could do was to offer him a low-strength prescription painkiller. Corrin felt better for a time, but soon noticed that his headaches were far worse in rooms with large or powerful machinery that stayed on continuously or for long periods of time, such as refrigerators, computers, water heaters, or air conditioning units. His aversion to power-heavy rooms caused him to seek quiet, dark areas of the house even if he was less comfortable or entertained overall, and he also began spending more time outdoors - but avoiding power lines and transformers especially.

When the headaches began to subside, Corrin felt well enough to resume his volunteering, but found he could not bear to come within a half-mile of the hospital. He told all these things to his mother, who had begun to hear on the news about the emergence of psychic phenomena all over the globe. Being a rational sort, and fearing for her son's safety during a time of worldwide panic, she sent him to a rural part of northern Montana before his senior year of highschool, to live in relative isolation - both from the media and from the power sources he had come to loathe.

However, as the PDI was formed and took control of the "infected" situation, Corrin was still not faring well enough to hide his sensitivity. His headaches came around during school hours - with lots of lights and computers - and with no friends except his cousins, rumors quickly spread around the ruthless senior class. During an indoors P.E. class held in the gymnasium in winter, students hissed hushed whispers as the lights seemed to brighten close to Corrin, and dim as he walked away. He reached for the handle of the bathroom door, and all at once was struck with a bolt of electricity as the power surged through the fluorescent light above, exploding the bulb.

Corrin recalled feeling his migraine peak intensely for a split second, and then nothing. He passed out, but came to in a few seconds with no pain, but a crowd of students staring at him on the floor, jabbering and shrieking amongst themselves in this now darkened corner of the gym. He felt great - the headache he'd been fighting for months was completely gone but the jig was up. Within a matter of days the PDI had been called, and all presence of Corrin's short time in Montana were taken and confiscated, down to the facility in Antarctica.

Corrin's mother was informed after about 48 hours, and they were allowed to set up communication methods, talking with video calls once or twice weekly. Since his arrival he has tested his electrokinesis twice, once by himself and once under supervision, but after the single incident of reflexive shocking when an unstable patient started swinging at him, he has been too unnerved by the possibility of harming someone to try anything further. All around he's friendly enough, knowing that most of the patients gathered here, don't want to be, just like the kids at his mother's hospital.

Sorry, that went kind of long. My character sheets always do...

The rugged Pyrrhus, he, whose sable arm,
Black as his purpose, did the night resemble
When he lay couched in the ominous horse,
Hath now this dread and black complexion smear'd
With heraldry more dismal; head to foot
Now is he total gules; horridly trick'd
With blood of fathers, mothers, daughters, sons,
Bak'd and impasted with the parching streets,
That lend a tyrannous and damned light
To their vile murders: roasted in wrath and fire,
And thus o'er-sized with coagulate gore,
With eyes like carbuncles, the hellish Pyrrhus
Old grandsire Priam seeks.
