Lets be honest, it's all about the dicks. For a long time girls have been objectified in movies, 'sex sells' after all. When you get down to it, Twilight is probably the only movie that comes to my mind where it's objectifies men more then the woman. And in a way, this makes me incredibly sad. And even more so, it's one of the only Fantasy stories that follow a females perspective.
The latter is perhaps what made the book so popular, and the former is perhaps what made the horrid movie popular. I read the first book, and I'll admit it was all right. The writing was flimsy, the plot holes were tremendous, but the book was a good distraction from reality.
After the book, I watched the movie. I didn't have super high expectations. The book will always be better then a movie. And this book I found was mediocre. Of course though, what I didn't expect was that this movie would become one of my most hated movies of the year.
I'm pretty sure a lot of girls don't like it when a female is only tits and an ass in a movie, that's respectable. Sadly though the girls who disdain this objectification of their gender may be the same girls watching this movie, to look at Lautner's muscles.
When I watch a movie, I watch it for an experience, and regretfully that I find is what this movie lacked. And to be honest I found the idea behind Twilight was solid - it had potential.
However, it's done wrong. Terrible execution, bad actors, and perhaps what I find the worst - two dimensional characters.
And I'm a guy that preferred the character development in Titanic over the disastrous second half - Hell, I even cried when Jack died. So, I love characters, I love learning about them, and in the Twilight movie, I simply couldn't.
I just couldn't find anything about twilight romantic. I don't really see a loving couple, I don't see affection. And hell, if we step into the fact that Edward is a vampire, I didn't even see lust. *Then again, I don't see a vampire either* What I did see was basically marketing. 'Step right up girls! This is your very own fairytale, your fantasy. Forged by a girl, for girls. Oh, and we have a vampire!' And by vampire they basically mean they don't have a vampire. It's sort of like putting a bunch of potatoes in a case of chocolates. In the end it's still just a bunch of potatoes. The only difference is they fucking know we'll by them because it says chocolates on them.
Another thing I think worth bitching about are the the guys that say they like the movie only so they can have a piece of ass. Now, is this a movie, or a damned meat shop? So there, what became out of Twilight?
Well, for one an idea which could have been good only peaked at below mediocrity. And many people have settled at mediocrity because it's the best they can relate with. Secondly,
instead of objectifying woman this movie basically objectifies men. Which, is no worse then how woman are objectified in a movie, but all the while, absolutely no better. The thing is however, this is a movie. I want a story, not a porno. I want to see a romance actually flourish, not just this guy flexing his muscles or a girl taking off her top. (Of course I'm drawing a parallel.)
Three - Expectations in female leads have lowered.
It's nice to see a movie where the woman aren't objectified (I know, it's getting redundant) but men are still objectified, and despite Isabella not taking off her top...she is actually one of the most desperate...most...helpless characters I have ever seen. I just wish the expectations girls had in a fantasy world made specifically for girls were higher. Why couldn't Bella have more inner strength? Aw well, at least I always have Hermoine and Eowyn.
