Alright, I'm an unabashed Tom Clancy fan, and Rainbow Six has always been one of my favorite books. Likewise, the first two games, especially Rogue Spear, were awesome.

Then came a slew of bad games, and not even the Vegas series could pull me back in. I missed the mission planning, the meticulous tactical options and tension that came with seeing it unfold, or actively taking part in it. I moved on to other series as a result (SWAT and Ghost Recon).

And now apparently there's talks of taking the game into Call of Duty territory.

The problem is, R6 was never, ever supposed to be about big shootouts. The unit's not supposed to exist, and in the books, they go so far as to dress as the police forces of the country they're operating in, to ensure that secrecy. They even complain about how the boots need better rubber soles, so as to make less noise.

Turning the series into a Call of Duty-style shooter is like turning the Thief games into a hack-and-slash.

Vegas 2 was fine, I guess. But it was too action based. But they need to return the series to it's tactical roots. If they make it into just another CoD clone the game will flop. People already have CoD and Battlefield. Another shooter like that doesn't have a place in the market. We need a real tactical game.

The group believes that the American government is irrevocably corrupted by greedy politicians and corporate special interests, and they will do whatever it takes to reclaim their country. And those are the villains.
Not buying

Pop Quiz: What does "Rainbow Six" mean?

Just curious if people know the answer after all this time.

The leader of the unit, of course. :D

Rainbow is to signify the unit's multinational elements, and Six is the unit commander.

I loved the first two games, but come on. Raven Shield was the pinnacle of the series. The zulu go-code, first person weapon models, and the technology leap made it so much better for me. One of my favourite games ever, and one of very few games that I played a ton of the multiplayer.

The Vegas games were "good", but they weren't what the series was all about at all. But they sold well and so I knew the series as I loved it was dead. I doubt I'll be getting this, but I'll be sure to replay Raven Shield for the millionth time.

I dunno. Raven Shield is where it started to lose a bit of the spirit for me, maybe because that's when I also started playing SWAT 3.

Personally, I enjoyed the R6:Vegas games' gameplay and would like this newer game to be more like that rather than a bland Call of Duty clone. Matchmaking in multiplayer was terrible, but once you got a group together, you could have a good time.

"would like this newer game to be more like that than Call of Duty"

Whoops, missed a negative there. Thanks for pointing that out.
