Hello,

I've never posted on the escapist forums before, but I couldn't find the topic I was looking for so I'm posting this now. If this is addressed somewhere and I just couldn't find it I apologize.

I'm new to first person shooters. I've never really been able to get into the few I've tried...then I bought Bioshock. I am in love with it, and I feel like I have warmed to the idea of first person perspective in general.

But now I have a dilemma- I don't know what other games I should try. Any recommendations you folks have as to a good FPS with a good story? (I need a good story or I lose interest) (I have a PC, a PS3 and a PS2)

Thank you for your help!

P.S. Ok, I'm willing to forgo a "good story" if it's fun. I doubt I'll be playing much multiplayer, at least for a while- so consider my question to be about FPS games with good single player modes, I guess.

It depends. Mass Effect has a killer story and is a nice 3PS/RPG hybrid; but play the first one before the second, you'll thank me for it.

If you like a modern setting with a large multiplayer component, along with customizing your play style, I'd suggest Modern Warfare 2 (as much as I hate it personally, it is a good game for some people).

If you like a spacier setting with more rigid playing with lots of game types and maps, Halo is your deal for sure. It also has very good multiplayer support, but I'd grab ODST if you plan on doing online much, it comes with all the maps.

Finally, the sequel to Bioshock is slightly lacking in the campaign, but if you enjoyed the first game and like multiplayer, it has an addicting (if laggy) multiplayer component as well.

EDIT: Also, what the guy above me said. HL2 is good story-wise and if you get it on PC you're in mod city baby!

Well, Call of Duty 4 is the most obvious choice.

Half-Life / 2 are also phenomenal titles.

Despite what people say, Halo is a good choice. Especially the first two. Unlikw games like Call of Duty, it actually sets up a universe. So the story is pretty solid.

assuming you play on the pc

single player; half life
multiplayer; tf2 or cod. Getting the orange box would be a safe buy.

Half Life 2 is a modern classic. The first Half Life is cool too if you don't mind dated graphics.

Speaking of dated graphics, anyone interested in shooters should at least try Deus Ex and System Shock 2. They're still brilliant games.

Well, if you're looking for a good story without bioshock, you're pretty much SOL aside from Half-Life.

Well, the new Metro 2033 is good fun. If you're into scary movies, check out F.E.A.R., the first one, the second is not that great.

Half Life 2. I rest my case.
I third, fourth, or however-many-it's-up-to-nowth this. Just grab the Orange Box, and you're off to a good start. HL2 and the two episodes are rather good, and Portal's not so much an FPS but is awesome anyway, so getting it thrown in with them is nothing to complain about. The story won't completely blow your mind or anything, but it's definitely solid, and it has some likable and interesting characters and develops stuff pretty well. The next thing that comes to mind after Valve's games in terms of story in an FPS is the Marathon trilogy, but those are kind of...ancient. They gave people a good several years of debate over what all the details of the story actually meant (and a few of them are still at it now, 15 years later).

Half Life 1/2 + Episodes.

These games are not to be left out, they are classics.

Oh, don't forget Portal if you like puzzles.

Half-Life and Half-Life 2 (and both episodes) are both classics, distilled from pure excellence. I would highly recommend that you buy and play them. Portal too.

To me the Half-Life games start very slow and they failed to draw me in.
Don't get MW2, short and frustrating campaign with broken online multiplayer.

I recommend getting the granddaddy of all FPS games, Wolfenstein 3D. There is a freeware version and is actually quite fun. Of course the graphics are 16-bit era sprites, but what other game lets you kill Mecha-Hitler?

I would have to recommend the first 2 Halo games as they are both on PC. They have a great story and both the PC versions are moddable if thats what your into.

Even though you said you weren't looking for multiplayer games I would still recommend Left 4 Dead (2 is better in my opinion.) as its just heaps of fun and the multiplayer is mostly co-operative, not competitive.
