If you want a good story Modern Warfare 2 is pretty good I've heard the first is better.
If you want an extremely fun game with an alright story get Battlefield Bad Company 2.
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 are both very fun.
Portal.
If you want good Online Shooters, Get Battlefield 2142.

I would say if you're going into multiplayer, avoid modern warfare 2 like the plague. It gets really really frustrating really fast. It's not a bad game, but there are too many things that will screw you over all the time (danger close pro springs to mind...) I'd personally take the previous COD, world at war as most of the people on multiplayer are new, yet its single player has a pretty engaging and decent length campaign, which will keep you going for a long time on the various difficulty settings. On the topic of Star Wars Battlefront 2, it's one of the most fun games i've ever played. And before I forget, avoid halo 3, matchmaking is packed full of generals and 'second profile' boosters. If you're new, you will get whooped repeatedly.

I would have to say Killzone 2 for the PS3.
Its the most atmospheric wargame Ive ever played, you atually feel like your at war on a distant planet. And theres no crappy gimmicks, its basically kill everything with red eyes.

For the PS2, A Timesplitters game would be good (preferbly Future Perfect).
They are ridiculous on so many levels, the story, the characters, the dialogue. Really I can't say a bad thing about them. And best of all you can creat your own maps for multiplayer or even make your own story mode.

I can't help you on the PC front as I am not a PC gamer myself.

I had some fun with timeshift, but a very niched style of gaming. If you like a sort of puzzle added to your experience, get that.

If your PS3 is backwards-compatible, get Timesplitters 2 and Timesplitters: Future Perfect (I can't believe no one has said this!). Edit: Dammit, ninja'd.

Also, Left 4 Dead (1 or 2, both have awesome co-op), Team Fortress 2, and Condemned are fun.

I'm in a similar boat - not so much new to FPS, more that I'm completely useless at them because I don't play them. But yeah:

Team Fortress 2 is good fun if you can handle a bit of a learning curve... by which I mean, until you're competent, getting killed every few seconds by the people who've been playing it for years. I'm not a Half-Life fan so I won't bother recommending those - besides, everyone else has already said it.

If you're on 360, Halo 3 might be worth a look. It came up quite a few times when I posted a thread on here asking for a nice easy FPS for beginners, so I bought it on discount and played it a bit. I ignored the story - it's sort of pointless trying to work out what's going on when your first experience of the trilogy is the last part - but the gameplay is entertaining enough if you're looking for gun-goes-bang-man-falls-down (or gun-goes-pew-pew-alien-or-something-falls-down) action. I didn't touch the online multiplayer though - I'm strictly a single-player person (with the exception of TF2) and... well, what I've heard of the player base doesn't really endear it to me.

Oh my, i remember a long time ago having an argument over on the old Bioware forums, before ME2 came out, on whether Oblivion was strictly an FPS because you could shoot arrows. That was a fun/irritating day.

OT: To the OP, all the Half-Life's have good storytelling as far as FPS's go. The Mass Effects are technically third person, not first-person, but they have great stories nonetheless. The second definitely has better shooting gameplay, though it's harder to understand without playing ME1.

All the big titles you'll want to avoid. I love BF:BC2, but story is definitely not its forte. Imho, MW2's multiplayer and singleplayer are both rubbish, but the story of CoD4: MW is decent (but short) if you like action movies, at least.

Fallout 3 is a terrific role-playing fps hybrid, if you're into that oblivion-style open world kind of rpg.

Also, i hear The Darkness is pretty good, but i haven't had the chance to try it myself.

No One Lives Forever

A fun shooter taking place in a 60's spy romp.
The story is goofy yet entertaining and well-paced, the weapons feel just right, it has fun gadgets like exploding lipstick and a robot poodle, and there's tons of side-splitting gags - the humour is the best part of the game. I love it so much, I've beaten it once every year since its release, which was in the late 90s so don't expect very fancy graphics though.

But it is - even in a world with gems like Halflife 2 - my favourite shooter of alltime. If you can stand the somewhat dated graphics, you're in for a real treat.

My personal favorite is Deus Ex, should cost like $2 by now.

For a more modern game, the STALKER series.

I'd recommend HL2, or if you're wiling the sublime, and slightly similar to it's predecessor Red Faction (seriously the game is fun as anything).

Call of Duty and Battlefield are good games but the mechanics and need for quick reactions could be a deal breaker for someone not used to the genre.

Well, Portal is technically an FPS, so you could always go with that. As for others, Fallout 3 is also "technically" an FPS. Both have very good stories and gameplay.

As for more standard FPS's, most everyone has already stated CoD 4, Umm, the Battlefield Bad Company games are great FPS's, (both 1 and 2 are quite fun)

Those are the greats, but I'm sure there are many others.

To add to the list, Max Payne, a shooter with an impressive story, taking the age-old cliche of vengeance to new heights.

Battlefield Bad company 2 is amazing, and although it's a TPS rather than an FPS, Just Cause 2 is immensely fun...

Well, lets see. CoD is great for story, but i find the multiplayer gets old after a month or so. BF:BC2 is great for multiplayer, but I prefer Halo 3. Yes, it is old. Yes, there are a lot of dicks playing, but the mute button exists on purpose. If you are creative, even the slightest, then Halo is the best choice because of its excellent map editor (Forge) and saved films (for Machinima). As for it's playlists, you can find just about everything, from hard core competitive (Ranked/MLG) to casual fun (Action Sack/Social). Also, if you hate that, but have friends, custom games is your best friend. You can edit everything about any game type and map to suit whatever you want to do for fun. Hell, you can run an Halo RP if you want.

To top it off, if you get ODST instead, you have all the DLC maps (Heroic/Legendary/Mythic I/Mythic II map packs), Fire Fight, Halo 3 multiplayer (Custom games and Forge included), an excellent (But short) campaign with a good story, and access to the Halo:Reach Beta in May. Pretty good deal for $60 bucks in my opinion.
