Since you have a PS3 i would honestly suggest Killzone 2.

Its a really well tuned machine of a game but the storyline is vapor thin.

Its essentially "Bad guys there! Go Rip them apart Sev!"

Its a fun, tight shooter. You might have some fun with it, its what drew me into shooters. Though after playing it i have yet to find a shooter that feels as well paced as it...

Bioshock 2 is great fun. For fun I'd recommend Modern Warfare 2 for the multi-player and the pretty ridiculous action set-pieces.

Prey.

You play as an Indian who's been abducted by aliens along with his grandfather and girlfriend. You get free, and have to find and save them, while stopping the alien invasion.

The game is really cool, because it plays with gravity a lot, allowing you to walk on walls and ceilings, which really changes up the combat. It's also a good game for those who are new to the genre, because you can't really die. When you die you go on a "spirit journey" where pretty much you enter the afterlife, do some shooting, and then you come back to right where you were before.
This is also pretty awesome but isn't it only X-Box 360?

I've also heard Borderlands is really fun. Lastly on PS2 I'd recommend Star Wars: Battlefront 2. It can be played as both FPS and TPS. It is also a load of fun. Plus its great with friends.

Hmmm... I'd say play Halo, then Half-Life, then Call of Duty.

Why? Because that's what I did, and it's worked out fine.

Well, relatively fine.

Nope, Prey is out for PC too.
Same goes for Battlefront 2 (stupid friend made me buy it on steam saying we'd play a lot of multiplayer. Played 2 hours. One of these days, I'll kill him).

Ok, I'm definitely getting the Orange Box right now. Then I'll look into some of these other titles. Thank you! (still open to suggestions, should someone want to add another favorite)

Well, now that you've joined us VALVe drones (trust me, you WILL be assimilated. And then deliciously eaten in the form of a sandvich), I'll say that Metro 2033, as some others have said, is pretty good.
The Darkness, which you can get for PS3, although it might turn out to be rather difficult to find, is also quite good. An underrated little gem, specially in the PS3, since it's a port from the 360 version and the graphics aren't quite the same, but nonetheless, a very story driven and different FPS.

Yeah, Half-life pretty much sucks, all of them. You probably don't want those. Portal is excellent though. Team Fortress 2 has no story, and while it's charming for a few minutes, no, it's not really that much fun.

FEAR, Penumbra, Thief, Deus ex, that's the stuff you want. Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines is excellent as well, and depending on how you feel about Star Wars there's some stuff to look into there. Stalker and Metro 2033 I haven't played myself, but they seem to be nice.

Well, the new Metro 2033 is good fun. If you're into scary movies, check out F.E.A.R., the first one, the second is not that great.
Yeah Metro was good same can be said about FEAR.

OT:Bioshock 1 & 2 are good shooters

Prey.

Seriously.

You can't die, it's great fun, great atmosphere, and even has a gun that regens ammo. You also regen health up to 25%.

It was my first FPS, and I can now proudly declare myself more than competent at the genre.

Any of the games I'd suggest have been put forward already:

The Half Life series does an excellent job of storytelling with no cutscenes and a mute protagonist.

CoD:MW, either game, both have a good story that is set in our world but dramatised. Coherent not-so-much, but good nonetheless. They are, also, only 8 hours or so long.

If you don't mind getting older games, then both Deus Ex and System Shock 2 are excellent. Deus Ex is a brilliant fusion between RPG and FPS, with an involving and deep story. System Shock 2 is a survival horror FPS, which has strong ties (ie these games borrowed heavily) to BioShock and Dead Space, two recent gaming franchises.

Mass Effect, while not an FPS, would be a good option for you, concentrating on story over gameplay as it does (especially the first game).

Fallout 3, from the masters of sandbox Bethesda, while not having a driving plot, does create a world that is enjoyable to explore and influence in the way you want to.

Have a look for more information about these if you like the look of them, and welcome to The Escapist.

Any recommendations you folks have as to a good FPS with a good story? (I need a good story or I lose interest) (I have a PC, a PS3 and a PS2)
For Single Player: Half Life 2 + Episodes for your PC, not the PS3 version. I'd recommend the Valve Complete Pack, it's pretty expensive ($100 or $80 I think) but a good discount on buying separately. It's also got enough to keep you going for months in it.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and STALKER: Call of Pripyat, also for PC. Big FPS adventure games, extremely atmospheric.

Call of duty 4: PC or PS3, it's up to you. Single player is identical, if you think you'll be getting into online at some point in the futur then I recommend the PC version.

PS, welcome aboard!

Well, Call of Duty 4 is the most obvious choice.

Half-Life / 2 are also phenomenal titles.
<color=purple> Call of Duty 4 is one of the greatest FPS of all time....so yeaaa.
And Battlefield Bad Company 2 is great. While these games are both great choices for you, they will also serve a greater purpose, because when you finally get around to multiplayer, if you find that you like it, these 2 games have extraordinary multiplayer. I also just read that DICE vowed to never charge money for new multiplayer maps, there is another bonus for you. :)

If you play in the PC:

Half Life series
FEAR
Serious Sam
Call of Duty 1-4
System Shock 2 ( it's like BioShock, just 8 years released earlier, it has the same story, but it has a much better gameplay and horror)
Escape from Butcher Bay
Thief series (probably the best stealth series so far)
Halo 1 (it was my first FPS, and it has a special place in my heart, although I don't like it so much now).

Team Fortress 2 is fun, and if you get it with he orange box, you also get Half-Life 2, two expansions, and Portal. Also, the Call of Duty series is nice, Modern Warfare 2 also

Lots of people have said this, but Half Life 2 is great. Star Wars Battlefront 2 doesn't have much of a story, but I find it pretty fun. Battlefield: Bad Company is good, too.

If you are new to FPS, avoid the original Half-life. Playing games with very recent graphics like HL2, Mass Effect, COD4, and then playing Half-Life will make you realize the graphics to be frustratingly ugly. Once you grow into FPS, I highly recommend HL as its the Godfather of good story telling in FPS.

Also I would recommend CSS and UT2k, but those are multiplayer games with not much of a story but kill everyone. If you want just the story stick to HL2 and COD4, but once you want to dabble with the rabid masses of multiplayer, play CSS and UT2k.
