Half Life 2 is a modern classic. The first Half Life is cool too if you don't mind dated graphics.

Speaking of dated graphics, anyone interested in shooters should at least try Deus Ex and System Shock 2. They're still brilliant games.
Problem is to get your hands on System Shock 2 without pirate it since no one owns the legal rights to publish it.

You can still get it from Amazon or eBay.

My favourites are: Half-Life 1 and 2, Call of Duty 4, 5, and Modern Warfare 2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal.

Far Cry 2 was heaps of fun too but be warned. It gets really repetitive so does demand a good attention span. If you play a lot of RPGs then you should cope

Borderlands is fun if you dont expect much of the ending, can get a bit repetitive too.

Crysis and Crysis Warhead are good too, just dont have high expectations for the story.

If you pick up games quickly I do believe there are still people playing Counter Strike: Source.
It will be HARD as all these people have been playing for years now so I would recommend Modern Warefare 2 over it but its still an option if you dont mind older outdated games

EDIT: Nearly forgot. Left 4 Dead 2. Great game. Dont bother with the first one theres no continuation of story just a change of setting and characters.

As always I recommend the PC for all of these games.

We need bots back. Timesplitters was awesome and COd would be cool if you didn't have to put up with angry nerds who love to "PWN" and "T-Bag". Very cool

Of course, a bajillion people have said The orange box, but I'll harp on too, because it totally converted me to pc gaming, everything there is amazing, and it's pretty cheap nowadays you should have no trouble finding it for about 20 quid.

Hmm... I think all or almost all of my suggestions have been mentioned already.
Half-life (series) for story, Painkiller for blazing action, Timesplitters for just plain fun. System Shock 2 was really great, and System Shock 1 had some far-out ideas for its time.
The first F.E.A.R. (haven't played the second) was fun enough, but I thought the story needed serious work and the "scary bits" and "shooty bits" weren't integrated very well.

If you don't mind dinosaur graphics, you can download the original Marathon trilogy for free. Even if it's only presented through static text screens, the story is vastly superior to Halo's.

Clive Barker's "Undying" was pretty cool. The storytelling is a little wonky in places, and you may have to mess with the settings to get it to run at a reasonable speed, but being able to shoot with one hand and cast spells with the other is nifty, and it's the only game I know that gives you a spell which forces people to commit suicide.

And if you're looking for something totally different, try Killer7, which is only an FPS in the sense that you shoot things from a first-person perspective (with no other conventions of the genre.)

Any of the recent Call of Duty games mind you its popularity derives from online but it gets extremely intuitive and then addicting the moment you start getting kill streaks

otherwise if you want a more tactical approach I would definately reccomend any of the battlefield series at the moment bad company 2 has my deepest love and affection

Welcome to shooters get some red bull and hot pockets and get ready to be EXTREMELY angry because there are alot of shall we say: faggots online :D

Since you doubt you'll be playing much multiplayer.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl,STALKER: Call of Pripyat, Call of Duty 4,Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2,Fallout 3,The Orange Box,Bioshock 1+2, Metro 2033, Mass Effect 1,Mass Effect 2,F.E.A.R,Killzone 2 and Prey.
** Fallout 3 and Mass Effect are FPS-RPG Hybrids**

I'd try out TF2 if you pick up The Orange Box...Multiplayer is where FPS shines to be honest.

I'd say get The Orange Box. Not only do you get Half Life 2 complete with Episodes 1+2, you get Portal (a first person puzzle game) and Team Fortress 2 (A multiplayer class-based FPS). This will give you a lot of variety and will keep you pretty busy. I'd also recommend the Timesplitters series. (specifically 2 and 3). They're available for PS2 and the original Xbox. (360 is backwards compatible with old games, right?).

If you're not up for multiplayer at the moment try avoid the likes of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as the multiplayer is prevelent since the campaign isn't particularly long.

Bioshock 2 has a mediocre story, but is still pretty fun and has some multiplayer if you feel up to it, although it's not the best mind you. Mirrors Edge isn't exactly a shooter, but it's definately first person and extremely fun. I'd probably also recommend Fallout. Try get the Game of the Year edition as it comes with all the DLC because once you finish the main quest you're character is basically unplayable and one of the DLC packs (Broken Steel) allows you to replay said character.

Since you love Bioshock a story driven First Person Shooter you will really like Half-Life 2 + Episodes, then try to get into some "irratic" shooters like Modern Warfare 2 and Halo.

I see people reccomending STALKER: Shadow Of Chernobyl and its sequels but wait until you get more experienced at FPSs. STALKER happens to be harsh and unforgiving but otherwise an atmospheric and spooky game.

If you have a PS3 try Killzone 2, it can be sluggish, has no story and irritating characters (you will hate Rico by the end), it is worth a play though.

I might as well make a list:

Deux Ex (PC),
Half-Life 1, 2 + Episodes (PC),
STALKER: Shadow Of Chernobyl (PC),
Portal (PC),
Modern Warfare 2 (PC, PS3),
Far Cry (PC),
Time Splitters 2 & Future Perfect (a good PS2 classic),
Halo 1, 2 (PC),
Battlefield 2 (THE Online FPS),
Condemned 1 (A good spooky FPS for the PC),
Butcher Bay (You play as Riddick on the PC),
Painkiller (A stupid fun FPS)
Theif 1 & 2 (Avoid Deadly Shadows),
Rainbow 6: Vegas (A Tactical FPS avoid PS3 version),
The Darkness (A good gothic story driven FPS),
Doom 3 (PC),
Black (PS2),

Get Orange Box on the PC it is basicly the best version.
Thats all I got.

You cannot go wrong with Valve. This is the company that rewrote the FPS, and is still making great games today.

Single-Player: Portal, Half-Life
Multiplayer: Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, Left 4 Dead, Day of Defeat, Half-Life Deathmatch

If you can spare around $150, get the complete pack on Steam. That may sound like a lot of money, but your buying at least twenty games.

If not, get The Orange Box. Today its around $30, and each of the games it has to offer are around $20 each (buying the Orange Box rather than each game individually saves you around $50). Five games: gives you the Half-Life 2 saga, Team Fortress 2 (I think Valve's best online game), and Portal.

But, whatever you do, get all Valve games for the PC.

For PC, I recommend: The Orange Box, Left4Dead 2 (anything but australian version) and STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl or Call of Pripyat.

for PS3: Resistance series, Killzone 2

You've heard the Half-Lifes and such, so take that advice. But I will be the one to say that anyone knocking Halo here has some issues. Get Halo, starting with the first one, and play through them. Amazing series of games.

Gears of War, while not a first-person shooter, has some fantastic gameplay concepts and deserves to be checked out as well.
