I'm baffled why you would build a stealth character when, with the dlc, you can get every skill to 100 easilly. There is no reason to specify your playing method because all styles are available by level 50. Just start with a reasonably high int (8 or more) and buy the extra stat in the medical centre east of vegas and then you can concentrate your perks on damage and effect increases.

Gambling is broken for the record. With luck 10 you will be able to double down on 19's in blackjack and almost always pull out a 2. With luck 1 you will almost always pull a 10 when you have 12...so if you want to make your game as boring and easy as possible, run to vegas with 9 luck and clean the casino's out which nets you around 40,000 caps and some combat armour. You can do this at about level 3 :p I say 9 luck because the last point doesn't have an effect on critical chance since it's half your luck rounded up...it's mainly a wasted skill point for the 10.

One last thing to consider, melee is totally broken. With no real skill in melee you can cause shit loads more damage with a super sledgehammer than with 100 skill in guns and a moderate firearm. Power strikes cause many creatures to bounce away from you so with a little practice you can push melee creaturs, like radscorpions, away before they can hit you...easy xp and reasonable cash value.

its very much like the old school fallout games where your skills actually matter
I disagree completely. The old games made you choose, this game gives you everything by the end. Having just played Fallout for the first time in ages i can honestly say that the only skill you need in that game is energy weapons, everything else is just a filling. Fallout 2 is a different beast altogether though. Good job you can get to level 20 in about an hour of gameplay and have all the best weapons in the game...in that respect New vegas is very much like Fallout 2.

I've just played all the games through again recently and i can say that Fallout is too simple. Fallout 2 is complicated but breaks really easy and xp is far too easy to come across. Fallout 3 is a good story but the game lets you max everything out. New vegas is more of the same but with a slightly less interesting story and slightly more powerfull weapons. Fallout tactics is the only game in the series that is a struggle to finish and the skills have more actual effect. Maybe that is why i now consider it to be the best game in the series when 2 used to be one of my all time favourites.

Well hell, if you use all the knowledge of previous playthroughs or even internet guides, many of the best Rpg's are broken in one way or another. But there's no way in hell you would know about all of that stuff the first time you play it, so it works out just fine. And if you decide to power-game your way to absurdly good equipment now that you know how to, that's your business, but it doesn't mean the game is broken. I'd rather a game lets me do something nuts from the get go and beat the whole damn thing within 30 minutes (see Fallout I and Morrowind) rather than gating every last area and forcing me to go through everything in the exact order it wants me to.

Well the Old World Blues DLC has stealth armor. So there's that.

And yes, there is gambling in the game. Mainly once you get to New Vegas. If you win too many games at one of the casinos there, they'll kick you out and prevent you from gambling there anymore.

And like you, I didn't really think much of New Vegas on my first playthrough, second time through, I fell in love with it. Hopefully something similar happens with you.

So I'm the kind of player that doesn't mind being OP as fuck, in fact I prefer it. I've found a guide to get me to the implant doc as quickly as possible and on level 1. Once I'm as powerful as I can possibly be I'll start the questing and exploring and junk.

I away!

New Vegas is perfectly fine WITHOUT MODS. One thing about New Vegas, compaired to 3 is that well, its more dangerous, especially if you venture off the path too soon. You can immediately go to most places in 3 and feel alright, but even if I want to mess around in NV, I usually follow the southern U to Vegas before I spread out.

NV has a better world though, atleast in terms of how it reacts to itself. I love the different factions. Plus the companions are worth having with you, unlike in 3 who mostly just got in my way.

There is no fuss - it's just a nostalgia trip, and people are biased about it because it has 'a original dev or two'.

Really though, it's nothing at all like the original games. It's kind of like a cowboy romp.

Ok, what's the deal with some NPC's pronouncing Caesar as Seezer and some pronouncing it more like Kaizer?

Far as I know, Legion supporters pronounce it with hard C as is historically correct. Others in modern way, with soft C.

And imminent hijack: I just got this minutes ago from Steam sale. How viable is talky, lucky guy for first timer?

Luck is mostly useless, although some find it fun to keep winning in casinos until they kick you out. Speach is helpful and my favourite skill, but do spend some points on Small Guns. You will inevitably forced to fight a lot of monsters and people.

You can talk yourself through a whole lot of quests, especially in the DLC. Luck is nice, but nothing special.

Apart from some mandatory combat you can actually talk your way through everything if you make sure you max out speech before the last quests.
I had barely any combat skills on my first playthrough as I just talked my way around stuff or bartered my way.

The "proper" roman pronounciation is believed to have been Kaizer, which is also the root for the term for Emperor in many languages (Tzar, kaiser, kejsare, et cetera). Presumably, Caesar/Edward Sallow learnt of this and insisted that his subject refered to him in the proper manner.

Those who call him Caesar/seezer are usually NCR or civilians, while those who call him Caesar/kaisar are affiliated with the Legion, or displaced tribals who have only heard of the new Caesar.

Remember, Speech and Charisma are rather useful stats. There are lots of situations that can be solved by showing up in a nice speech-boost suit and doing some smooth talking, saving you some bother.

If your character is a woman, the Black Widow perk has some very good uses. If your character is male, Confirmed Bachelor has some strategic benefits, as well. I think that is the thing I like most about New Vegas, being a big mouth really does give you some benefits, helping you save the ammo for the bloody Geckos.

I always grab both of them, the speech benefits are fun, along with the damage boosts. Like, if you're a guy with CB, you can skip "Come Fly With Me"

You can also skip Come Fly With Me by going into Manny's room and reading the stuff on his computer. Much easier.

Really? To be completely honest, going in and slaughtering everything in the Repcon building was generally on my to-do list.

You can still get and do the quest, but checking Manny's PC or using the Confirmed Bachelor option makes it not mandatory.
