Eh, "reboot" isn't really the word. Honestly, I think people are getting far too fussed about this. Usually when stories are adapted to film, the film isn't meant to be a definitive version or update of the original, it just does its own thing. To mention another fantasy film series, take Lord of the Rings. Follows the plot of the books more or less, but it leaves out stuff (e.g. Tom Bombadil), adds stuff (e.g. the warg attack), and alters stuff (e.g. the Army of the Dead on the Pelanor Fields). Stating that the movie is an alternate timeline is more a way of establishing the film's own continuity (already has EU material in its own timeline), but that aside, it's an adaptation like any other. Same story, but with the changes you'd expect from any kind of film adaptation.Samtemdo8 said:I really don't mind because they are essentially rebooting the lore. The Madman said:I want it to be good but I'm also pretty skeptical it will be, as a result I'm taking a careful wait and see approach.
Also the trailers have been enraging the lore-nerd in me. Why is Ironforge involved? Their involvement in the fight against the Orcs only really began at the advent of the second war after King Llane was killed and Stormwind destroyed. There also shouldn't be any gryphon as those didn't really become an element of the Alliance till, again, the second war after the Wildhammer clans joined the fight and lent their gryphon expertise and training. Lothar also never fought in any Orc arena thingy, it was by a band of mixed Ogres and bandits he was briefly held captive during the first war. He certainly never fought by Durotans side.
If this movie takes place during the course of the first war there also wouldn't be any real fighting in a desert environment as most of the fighting then took place in the southern half of the Eastern Kingdoms. Maybe that's meant to be Westfall or the Blasted Lands?
Grumble grumble grumble.
Now I am a die-hard Warcraft fan; propbably one of the few in this website, but even I admit the mainstream lore in WOW can be a bit too inconsistant, and flat out ridiculous at times.
This movie and its potential sequals has to opportunity to reboot the lore into at least something more consistant and with less plot holes.
And credit where credit is due, it's actually adapting a Warcraft installment rather than doing a "in name only" film. How many VG-based movies have we seen where that's the case?
