New Xbox 720 is actually called Xbox.

Found this on Yahoo news today....any thoughts? Has graphical points as well as other interesting stuff.

The Xbox 720 will not be called that when it is finally announced. Instead, Microsoft will be reverting to the name of its first games console released 11 years ago, Xbox.

In addition, it will be seen as a hub to a number of devices to carry an "X" branding, one of which will be the much-rumoured 7-inch gaming tablet, which Pocket-lint has learnt will be called X-Surface, not Xbox Surface as previously thought.

The X-Surface will not be a Windows 8 or Windows RT device, we have been told by a tipster very close to the project who, naturally, wishes to remain anonymous. Instead, it will be a standalone portable gaming system. On launch, we are informed, it will be able to access the games, music and video hubs of the new Xbox, but will not have any apps of its own. It will not have a desktop as part of its operating system, rather be entirely focused on playing full console-quality games.

Although there are no technical specifications touted, we have also been told that the X-Surface tablet has much improved hardware over a Surface RT. With the source claiming that he/she "witnessed Unreal Engine 3 demos running at a solid 60fps".

There are also unconfirmed rumours that the X-Surface will have a proprietary 2.4GHz wireless protocol for compatibility with Xbox 360 controllers and, it is said, future control devices.

As for the "Xbox" itself, the tipster has confirmed some of the specifications previously leaked. "The majority of information leaked recently by many sources is true," Pocket-lint was told.

Microsoft is working with AMD on the central and graphics processors. The CPU will be 8-core, as previously rumoured, although each core will be running at 1.9GHz instead of the 1.6GHz reported. The rumours on the graphics trip were true, being an 800MHz GPU. "One benchmark used internally has been a custom build Watch Dogs E3 demo which runs at 55-60fps with only five cores at 100 per cent," we were told.

We've seen Ubisoft's Watch Dogs demo running on a super powered PC at E3 2012, so if this is true, the Xbox's graphical prowess will be most impressive.

One incorrect former rumour about the new Xbox that has been quashed by the tipster is that one of the cores will be dedicated to running the operating system. The OS will have a similar look to Windows 8, with moveable tiles, but won't be literally using that software. It will also require two-cores to run, as it will remain active in the background in order to provide full multitasking functionality. "Very much akin to Nintendo's offerings on 3DS and Wii U - but on a far larger scale," explained the source.

A couple of the features of multitasking explained to us include video calling in games (with users able to determine which corner of the screen to place the feed), and the ability to take screengrabs to save to hard drive or SkyDrive.

The source hasn't had access to the new Xbox controller, but says that button placement must be the same considering a normal Xbox 360 controller has been used in development. It will look different however, we have been told, as two design teams have been working on the controller alone.

Naturally, when a tipster is anonymous, there is some degree of trepidation attached to believing what they say verbatim. However, considering the facts Pocket-lint has been given, and the lack of outlandish claims, everything our source says is plausible.

What we haven't yet learnt is when the console will be launched, at E3 or a separate dedicated event. We'll keep you posted.

Not bothered by the names really, they have already got me hooked in with their branding tbh, now I've built up a network of friends etc on live, gamerscore and so on (did used to be a big PS player but they lost me with the ps3) yes so they could call it the gyrating s*** machine for all I care.

It's kl the next generation sounds like it's going to be such a leap forward but at the back of my mind all I can think is, it's going to cost a tonne of money an I'v just spent a skinful on a new pc lol.

The other thing is they keep saying developers are only just now taking the 360 to 100% capacity in what it can achieve so how are developers going to feel when its this much more powerful?

Are the discs going to bl-ray would be my big question, as thats the only big mistake Microsoft have made in my opinion all that HD discs, backed the wrong horse. That an claiming kinect was going to be sooo much better than everyone else's motion control.....

If it comes with a big obnoxious 'X' across the entire console itself, I might buy one for the lulz..

Man, I know naming conventions in the gaming industry are a bit stale, but really? Using the exact same name as a console released almost twelve years ago? How creatively bankrupt do you need to be...

Anyway, joy oh joy, new consoles.

I'll probably be a few years behind on getting these ones, like I always am, because I don't have the kind of disposable income to drop $600 for a console and two games willy-nilly.

It's just another attempt at copying Apple. It's kinda sad really. And they actually said that they want to be like Apple. You can Google it. So, where Apple has iStuff, Microsoft will have X-Stuff. I don't really care, but it's pathetic.

You do know that people have been doing this with brand since the beginning of time, Apple was not first and wont be the last one.

Well, this'll get confusing real quick. Do the call the first one Xbox Original now? I mean at least the first Halo had a nice big Combat Evolved so that we could tell it apart from everything else.

At 1:41am GMT today I sent out an email to a bunch of gaming sites claiming to be a Microsoft employee working on the new Xbox.

I made up every single word of it along with a couple of specs copied from other rumours that have been appearing on the Internet.

This was a bit of an experiment to see just how easy it is to get a fake story taken seriously. And it is shockingly easy in the games industry.

...

By 9:58am GMT, it was already ?in the news?.

At the time of writing, my fake news is appearing on major sites such as:

Yahoo
CNET
Gizmodo
Venturebeat
Tech Digest
VG247
NowGamer

Many games ?journalists? have no right calling themselves such things. The vast majority do nothing but copy & paste from other sites, and will willingly publish information without fact checking a single thing or attempting to verify the source.
Granted but still no proof of lies, only a portion of that link relates to this so truth within lies etc etc?? But then all news can never be accepted until we get the news from MS mouth. But all this stuff is interesting build up to the unveiling of the official news. :)

I'd take "X-Box" over "720". Really, the whole 720 thing just sounds awful. Yeah, I get that it is just 360 doubled, but it still sounds horrible. Why do people keep using it?

I was just calling it Xbox 3 for a while, but most places seem to have settled on "next Xbox" now.

The whole point of the 360 name was that it was a revolution (as in 360 degrees). Having the 3rd one being 720 or a double-spin doesn't really make sense. It would mean that the 4th gen one gets to be named after 1080, the cool snowboarding game though :)

Reverting to the previous name makes no sense at all, it's just unnecessarily confusing.

I have no real idea what they'll call it, other than there's about a 99% chance it will start with Xbox and have something after that.

If I can use the X-Surface as an eReader, I want one. I've been wanting a dedicated eReader for some time now, and if I can get something that would work with smart glass I think that'd be pretty sweet. I can handle something that I only use for reading or the occasional smart glass thing.

Ugh I'm not liking all this hub rubbish.

I just want a damn games console, not a 'media hub' with a ton of shitty tablets and phones connected to it where I can listen to music, while browsing the web, while updating my twittosphere with a photo of my latest meal, while talking with friends on facebook, while looking at the leaderboards, while I chat to my friends over XBL while I play a game.

I just want to play the freaking game. I've got my PC and my phone to do all the other crap.

THIS! OMG this every time. I'm fed up with every electronic device we own having to be able to do EVERYTHING. Smart phones, smart TV, bloody iPads, e-book readers etc. Now Microsoft wants to be the very centre of the entire media industry?

I just want to play my games, not be bombarded with adverts for another twenty zillion products and services.
