Man, I know naming conventions in the gaming industry are a bit stale, but really? Using the exact same name as a console released almost twelve years ago? How creatively bankrupt do you need to be...
It actually makes sense, I hear the 360 just flat out called Xbox all the time.

Everything will be called the X-thing? What is this, the nineties?
People who grew up in the '90s are now assuming control.

I hope this console's as big as the original Xbox!

Microsoft's not stealing ideas at all...
Seriously, they did NOT come up with a touchscreen controller on their own, just like Nintendo didn't come up with 7-gen motion controllers first. It was GOING to be the Wii Power Glove until they saw (and prevented through lawsuit) Sony's Move project.

It's just another attempt at copying Apple. It's kinda sad really. And they actually said that they want to be like Apple. You can Google it. So, where Apple has iStuff, Microsoft will have X-Stuff. I don't really care, but it's pathetic.
Yes, copying Apple. Because Apple isn't the biggest thief of ideas outside of China. They also couldn't have stolen the idea of a touch controller from NINTENDO, who invented the DS before the iPad was even an idea and was constantly bugged by fans to incorporate DS functionality into their console. I didn't ask for this...

microsoft actively tries to do things the way apple does because apple makes money and they feel they should get onto the closed-system-all-one-design-and-name-thing

If is Microsoft needs a mascot with some serious 'tude.

OT: MEh, seems dumb, but I'm not interested in Microsofts hardware anyway.

Why XBOX? Why not X-Sphere? or X-Cylinder?

Honestly, if it does become that, just please stop turning the Xbox into a hub, as others have mentioned.
This leak comes courtesy of Nintendo announcing a bunch of awesome stuff and poising themselves to win E3 this year with no doubts.

Microsoft already hinted that they wanted to go for a more closed set of systems with Windows 8. It's basically far less friendly than W7 when it comes to third party stuff. Xbox is already like that, all games coming through Microsoft. And now they want to add tablets and other devices too. They really do want to become like apple, which sucks big time. As apple and it's "If you use apple, everything needs to be from apple to work together" mentality.

Anyway, as for them going back to the name X-Box - does this mean we are getting a gritty reboot of the "franchise"?

Strikes me as being rather bland, kind of makes me miss the days where each new console that turned up actually had a new name, not just the previous one with a number slapped on the end. If they're going with this X-something naming convention, how long before they come out with a streaming service, which I could worryingly imagine them calling "X-Stream". Because that would be so cool, of course.

Why start this post with "anyway"? Well, I had something in before that initially then deleted it and just couldn't be bothered to reword.

what's the matter? Too X-treme for you?

Seriously, it's starting to sound more like obnoxiously marketed workout supplements than a line of tech products.

Why not just call it the neXtBox?

More Seriously, even if the whole article is BS, 720 is still a horrible name.

You do know that people have been doing this with brand since the beginning of time, Apple was not first and wont be the last one.
Are you mad? Apple always does everything first! Sure, the first tablet was launched by Microsoft a decade before Steve Jobs announced his, but the Surface is totally ripping off the iPad, and using an X-Branding is just ripping off the i-Branding!

That's no XBox

I'm disapointed they aren't calling it the XXXBox.

Serious Time: I'm hoping I get a job before this comes out 1) This whole set up sounds really expensive 2) I want to have money to drop on all the old 360 games that'll drop in price almost completely.

I know the whole thing is rubbish, but the idea of them calling it just "Xbox" got me thinking...

If they name it the same as the original console, could they also herald in the return of the old controller as well?

God I wish they would. I know "everyone" hated them, but I actually loved the gigantic controllers. They fit my hands well and the analog sticks felt much more sturdy than todays sticks.

Oh well. A man can dream.

so can yous can finally stop calling it xbox 720, that never made sense in the first place. oh its the next revolution of angles, but if it was called xbox 720 it would suggest that the resolution only went up to 720p.
