Hopefully someone else hasn't gotten to this yet, but oh well, here goes:

Christoper Nolan has confirmed the title of the next Batman movie and it is (drum roll please)
The Dark Knight Rises. Now we actually have a name to go along with all our fun little discussions about the film here in our little Shangri-La of the internet.

However, Nolan was also quick to confirm that the one villain that most thought might be appearing in this film will in fact not: Edward Nigma aka "The Riddler." That's right, all the specualtion and fan made trailers featuring the Riddler were for nought. Let the specualtion on who the main villain will be start all over again!

Here's a link to the story: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/10/27/christopher-nolan-reveals-title-of-third-batman-film-and-that-it-wont-be-the-riddler/

Well, the title makes sense but I wasn't expecting it to be so similar.

I'm surprised they let him use it actually, I'd have thought they'd want something to differentiate it further.

I didn't think it would be so similar, but I don't really care, as long as it's awesome. My favourite part of the article on Empire is this part:

"What Nolan seemed most interested in imparting was that he?s convinced Warner Bros. to keep telling his story in 2D, and to continue down the path of hi-def IMAX sequences."

I'm so glad he's told 3D to fuck off. This guy knows what he's doing. However, seeing as the Riddler has been ruled out, do we want to throw it upon to suggestions as to who the villain might be? I don't have enough knowledge of the Batman universe to begin to guess. My only knowledge of Batman villains comes from Arkham Asylum.

Is that the definitive title or the working title? When I see a poster with that I'll believe it.

No Riddler? He's the only other interesting villain out there besides Bane, The Penguin, and Ghul. Please don't put Catwoman in there, she's easily the worst villain of all. On the other hand I'd love to see Killer Croc.

The trouble with Killer Croc is that he doesn't really fit into Nolan's 'realistic' Batman. It's alright having a psychopath in clown makeup running around the city, but a mutated half human, half crocodile? I just can't see it myself.

Also, the title suggests that this will be the last Nolan Batman film. The Dark Knight Rises? We had the fall of Batman in The Dark Knight, and he will restore Batman in this third instalment. I don't know, to me that suggests it might be an ending. Of course, you can't tell just from the title, but you can speculate.

Not the greatest title, far too similar to the Dark Knight.

However, I'm glad it's not the Riddler- it would most likely have ended up like a poor imitation of the Joker, and it leaves it open for one of the more interesting Batman villains.

Hmm, at least it's not in 3D, and villan wise, hopefully Mad Hatter, you can do some dark, twisted ideas with him.

Will it be Humptey Dumptey? I think it will be Humptey Dumptey! Or maybe Great White Shark...

Oh and Dark Knight Rises is a rubbish name and the scriptwriter should be ashamed.

No offence Nolan, but that's a really crap title. More and more you're beginning to conjure up memories of the Dark Knight Strikes Again, a comic-book run with only slightly less dignity than Batman and Robin and a good deal more shit.

And not using the Riddler vicariously proves soemthing I have suspected all along. Many people condemn the sillier aspects of Batman, like Robin, the Riddler, the entire Silver Age, because they declare that they add nothing to the character.

In the hands of a good writer the Riddler is a terrifying madman with a deeply disturbing motif. In the hands of a good writer Robin is a reflection of Batman, but becoming the man Batman could never be, because Robin's tale is always one of self-discovery, instead of running away from the problem.

You'll note the use of the words 'In the hands of a good writer.' More and more I suspect that the new Batman series is not in fact well written. What is well written is blanketly ripped off from better comic books and what isn't well written (hello awkward romantic sub-plot) just reads like someone vomited on the typewriter.

Of course, none of this will outdo my fanboyish need to watch the movie, because I was one of the people who tried to delude himself that Batman and Robin wasn't terrible, but the more I collect the backissues of the comics the more I realise that whoever this Nolan-verse man is, he's not a Bat-man

Give us a rogue red-kryptonite influenced Superman!

Worse than the Penguin? At least she has some actual powers.

"The Dark Night Rises?"

Hm, Yahtzee will love that one. I can see the naming session now.

"Well, The Dark Knight was a huge success so what can do so that people know our new movie carries on the series?"
"Well, Batman will still be in it, I assume people will just re-"
"I know! We'll keep the name The Dark Knight and just add something at the end! They do that all the time in video games."
"That's a stupid idea, we named the first one Batman Begins, and everyone figured out that The Dark Knight was the sequel. If we keep the names so similar, it's more likely to confuse people."
"Shut up, you're fired. Now, I personally like Rises, because he's rising see?"
"The Dark knight Rises? Are you joking, the internet's going to have a field day with that one! It sounds like a really bad euphemism! They'll make porn-parodies with that name!"
"Exactly! Free Advertising! And I said you're fired."
"Good, because the last thing I want to be associated with is anything talking about Batman's rising."

Seriously, anyone else think that sounds like a sexual reference?

I think it will deal with Batman overcoming impotence.
It brings a whole new meaning to the conversation:

"What would you have me do, Albert?"
"Endure, Master Wayne."

Bad title. But I am intigued by the potential villian. But I'm still going to see it, because it's motherfucking Batman.
