Considering the absurd prices found on the Origin Store (web version, New Zealand IP address) I'm not surprised about this.

Then again I don't buy EA products anymore so this will not affect me.

We here in Sweden pay 88$ to 100$ for a new game NOW, personally I think the Americans should stop whining, you're getting the best deal!

Why couldn't a working adult afford it? I mean they shouldn't buy it, but all adults I know have at least 100 quid to spare by the end of the month. The adults you know must be fairly poor or living above their means if they spend their entire wage on rent and such o.x
Is that £100 to spare on games, or £100 to 'spare' total?
To spare on whatever entertainment or leisure they see fit. A day to a theme park, a night out at the pub, clubbing, movies, etc.

People who really don't have enough for a single game per month (even though this is fairly overpriced and I wouldn't recommend anyone accepting this) should not own a current-gen console unless they won it or got it as a gift. If, according to the post I responded to, all the adults don't even have 100 to put towards savings or leisure at the end of the month, how exactly are they buying a console for 300-400?

this won't last long, they tried to raise the price at the start of this gen if I remember right (I distinctly recall picking up a used copy of Oblivion for £45 on the 360 soon after launch) wait untill near enough everyone has a next-gen console, the prices will go right back down, and hey...there's always the Ouya

Guys, who cares? Those who want to play £55 for a game, will pay for it, whilst the rest of us will wait until the price drops, or we won't buy at all. The same with any product.... in the world!

i'm mainly interested to see if they bump up the prices of pc games even more when next gen rolls around. it's been happening slowly over the last few years, biggest ones being skyrim and any game associated with call of duty, but EA has stuck to the £30-£35 afaik for the majority.

somehow i don't think that'll last...

That's simply not true.

You can buy a PS3 or 360 for about £100-150 new, or even less, second hand now. You can also wait a few months for the game to drop from £35 - £15 or less. You're logic only works if you assume everyone bought their console within the first year or whatever.

I know plenty of people that don't have £100 per month to spend on themselves either because they have families, are paying for things like mortgages, earn minimum wage jobs, or they've saving money for more important things. Heck, even I've been in a position where I've had less than £100 for food and other essentials, after bills.

Ahem. This shit won't fly, with me personally at least, and their games will not be purchased by this particular consumer. 15 hours of minimum wage, just for one game? Nah. The 60 bucks is difficult enough as is.

Again, I'm not saying it's justified. But it is mostly balanced when compared to the equivalent economies of other countries, unlike your neighbors New Zealand.
Charging someone MORE than average for the sole reason "Because they could afford it" isn't what I would call balance.

It's like charging you 15 bucks for a candy bar because you just happen have some extra spare change on you.
The difference is the average though.

The 'average' is higher in Australia, to match the fact that you have a higher average pay.

It'd be like me getting angry at games being $60 here in the US when they cost the equivalent of just over $20 USD over in India (which EA also chose to fuck up, so you know, good on them for being equal-opportunity bad-PR-generators).

The Australian dollar might be almost as strong as the US dollar, but your higher wages do off-set the exchange rate compared to the US.
They offset eachother so that it becomes even. That's the whole point of the exchange rates. The fact the average person in Australia gets payed more EVEN after you would offset the exchange rate, is simply because our government doesn't screw us over.
You guys had a higher minimum wage too until the corporate controlled government dropped em even lower. Doesn't mean the rest of the world should suffer for it.

Yeah, that's just a steaming pile of horse shit.

I work a decent paying job at the moment (I was just doing odd jobs to get by for a few years) and even though I can easily afford $60 games, the price has still managed to cut my buying habit in half compared to last gen. I maybe buy three (at most) AAA titles a year and very rarely do I buy new. I've learned to wait a few weeks since most games are broken piles of shit anyway, until they get patched. However, since I'm going PC only for this upcoming generation, Steam should allow me to expand my library more often.

As for EA? I swore them and Bioware off after the mess that was ME3.

Its backwards from the standpoint that retailers are seemingly doing themselves out of money.
Of course, retailers don't set the price for the most part. Sure, they can choose to undercut the MSRP, but if their markup is anything like the US that means they'd be cutting their profits to zero or a loss. Now, it being the UK I have limited experience with the retail system over there, but I doubt EA is letting them get much more money off it. I'm also betting EA's pocketing most or all of that new five dollar difference.

And I'm not sure the import business is really putting them out much.

Thanks for the info on taxes, btw. Good to know.

So, what I've gotten from this thread is that Americans are dirt poor and need to pay less then everyone else.

Or am I missing something?

Ozgameshop is good, I import games from there, they come from the UK, you can also use paypal, prices are in AU dollars and I think they ship to NZ.
I use the Kiwi equivelant NZgameshop. They are terrific websites really. I'm still having to pay a little extra, but not having to pay an extra $50-60 more is worth it. Seriously, I laugh like silly when I walk into EB Games and see their prices. It's too bad more people aren't aware of these options.

Let me quote Marcus from Borderlands 2 as saying, "AH-HAHAHAHa-hoho. No."

EA Games? Don't care. Won't buy them then. If they're for the Xbone then it hardly matters to me anyway.

It's more because it's EA I think than the actual price itself. EA charging $80=Money grubbing assholes.

Valve asking for some more money=Oh, well, since Steam always gives me such amazing shit why don't I throw in a free blowjob as well?

Or have a family and kids.
If you don't have money left over by the end of the month, you shouldn't have had kids. That means that if anything happens, unexpected injury, disease or a vital appliance/vehicle breaking down, you are screwed.
I see, only well off families get to have kids. Got it.

Heh, yeah right I'm paying that much.
I'm a cheap *****.
Least expensive games I ever paid for came from Steam sales.
Least expensive game I got full price are 3DS games.

Ride on EA.
Ride on.

Oh, and I can't wait to see the shit fest that will be Mass Effect 4.
I really can't fucking wait.
Please tell me you're joking, please tell me that EA is not ready to pimp out Bioware for another ME game, that...this...there are no words in the tongues of Man, Elfish or Ork/Orc for this sort of stupidity... I am almost afraid now, 3 was such a terrible game that we still have flame wars of epic length and vileness over it... A 4th installment is too terrible to even comprehend at this point...
