A shift up to the Industrial/Colonial era could be an interesting premise.

Or they could go one further and set it around the 1920's, time period of the first world war.

Yeah, but if he is finally the centre of attention, and judging from where the story seems to be going he should be, then we might actually see some proper character development

The conclusion that me and all my friends came to that the best option would be to put less emphasis on the ancestors and more on desmond as he travels around the world gathering the pieces of eden, perhaps only delving into the ancestors memories for clues as to the actual locations of the items, finding secret passages and traps, and then traversing the present world in an attempt to gain them. This way they could include things such as Victorian England, or the Civil War or a World War or places in Asia and Africa.

However that being said, i think the War of the Roses would be an amazing setting for another game...but thats just me

As long as there are still swords and knifes as your primary weapon and it's a time period that is new and fresh for gaming (like the previous two games) I'll be happy.

I'd imagine it'll be set in the modern day, as others have said the game really left no reason for Desmond to have to go back into the Animus.
If you pay attention at the end sequence of AC2 you can hear the blonde woman (forgot her name :O) specifically state that they are taking the Animus with them for you to play around with previous memories on the way as a way of finding out more information. This pretty much makes it a sure thing that there will be a new past time period to explore. I have no idea why people are so sure AC3 will be set primarily in the future because that's just a baseless assumption and would make no sense. I'm sure there will be sections set in modern times though (I bet the final boss will be) but they won't set most the game in modern times because it just won't work as well and wouldn't fit with the style of game they have set up for us.

My theory is you'll explore various past time periods this time instead of just one, there will be some flickers of modern time (perhaps some short missions where you have to achieve a goal outside of the animus), similar to what AC2 had, but you will spend more time in the present than before, perhaps 20% of the game at most; and the final boss will be against Vidic in the present who probably uses the Apple against you.

No guns, please!

17th century France, during the time of Lous XIV or during the French or American revolutions. If most of the game would take place past the 1850s Ubisoft would have to change the gameplay too much and I'd hate another WW2 game.

Maybe they'll alternate parts of the game when you're in the Animus, playing as one of Desmond's ancestors, with parts in modern times that are bigger than in the previous games.

I think it'll probably jump around while focusing on Desmond. Like, maybe three different time periods, each with a major city to troll about in. 1770's Philadelphia, 1790's Paris, and how bout 1940's Berlin, for kicks. Then Desmond will totally save the world on December 21st 2012 (note the dates of the first and second game) in some Mayan place or space or some shit. Things will get crazy hobo-talk.

I expect that the main protagonist of AC3 will be Desmond himself, and we'll see him use his new assassin skills to break into Abstergo offices and whatnot.

However, I also think that the plot will require the Assassins team to travel around the world to various sites of ancient technology, and in order to activate them or obtain their power, Desmond will have to enter the Animus and take control of one of his ancestors to find out how. The ancestor he takes control of and the era they live in could differ for each site.

It'd be a perfect way to end the trilogy. It'd give Desmond his chance to shine, and give the developers the chance to show off multiple historical settings instead of just one.

18th century Scandinavia. It hasn't ever been used as far as I know.

Modern day Baghdad. You'd still have all the minarets to climb up and jump off, and you'd have to use Eagle-vision to hunt for IEDs.

I think they're going to abandon the whole ancient history thing and focus it more around Desmond. this is foreshadowed by
him being able to move and kill like an assassin towards the end, mixed with that mindfuck of a story ending.

this is why i feel that the series that will no longer dwell within the ancestors of desmond, it's old territory now. unless ubisoft abandons the series, and EA picks it up. ubisoft isn't as bland of a developer as most others, they know better. if this doesn't happen with 3, it will certainly happen with 4.
This is what I reckon will happen. If there is a section set in the past, I think it'll be about half of the game set in the past, and half the games set now, with Desmond, though with him in a much more action-y role than the first two games.

That was my point

I really wouldn't like it set in England, mockney accents make my skin crawl.

19th century America so I can get Lincoln.

No way, from a business standpoint. I can see a 50/50 split between modern and ancient assassinations, but theirs no way they'll abandon the proven lucrative formula that is running around old cities with a hidden blade. That is, after all, the entire basis of this series.

i definately agree with you the scenes in ac1 when you were brought out of the animus were very immersive for me as well.
