Creative Assembly did try a sci fi themed game that was sort of like Total War called Stormrise.

It was pretty terrible.

OT.
I want a 16th Century Total War. The English become the most powerful country in Europe under Elizabeth I, and they get into a big war with France and Spain.

Maybe I have my time spans wrong, but doesn't Empire pretty much fulfill this?

EDIT: Ah crap double post my bad, isn't there a way to delete one?

No, Empire starts in 1705, around the beginning of the Seven Years War.
The Elizabethan Era ran from 1558 to 1603. Renaissance times.

Personally I'd like to see Rome 2/Classical era, a game based around the time of the Reformation or a game set in the mid to late 1800s, when they stopped carving up countries, continents but the entire blinking world.

Of the 3, I'd most like to see a game based around the time of the Reformation, because the religion dynamic could be interesting; do you remain Catholic and face unrest as rebel preachers try to turn your people or do you throw your lot in with the other side, risking war with the Pope?
Rome 2 wouldn't go a miss, so long as we had the same leisurely time limit of the first game (really, your only real issues were outdoing Egypt or the Julii on a short campaign, which wasn't too hard); many of the new games just aren't very time-friendly.
I think the third idea would be ultimately infeasibly large.

Hang-on, just thought of another; Mongols - emulating or surpassing the exploits of Genghis and his descendents would be cool, or trying to stop them as another nation.

I want them to make "The Lord of the Rings: Total War"

Someone please try and tell me that would be the best RTS ever.
There have been a number of mods taking us to middle earth, however, an official product would be so much better, so I agree with you here.
Same; it would be awesome, although in terms of factions, it'd be interesting to see if they could implement it in a way it wouldn't immediately turn into Good vs Evil; I've found that two giant power blocks in TW games in the past don't really work as it becomes a war of attrition no one ultimately wins. The mods for Rome were pretty cool, although admittedly I never downloaded any of them.

Before Empire Total War, I'd definitely indulge in this sort of wishing. After Empire Total War and Total War Shogun 2, I would rather they not do any time periods I like, due to my extreme dislike/distaste with the mess they made with the interface and almost complete lack of moddability.

If it were closer to Medieval II Total War, with the technology/graphics/options available in the recent releases, I'd say...

Mesopotamian Total War (The great untouched era of warfare that no game ever really touches on in detail, and which the mods for in current Total War games are apparently dead. Assyria, Sumeria, Israel/Judah, Egypt, Hittite, Sea Peoples/aliens, Minoans, etcetera)

Hellas Total War (specific emphasis on the Peloponnesian War, Theban ascendancy, Philip of Macedon)

Warring States era (China from 475 to 221 BC, can finally put those anachronistic Sun Tzu quotes from other games to use in their context)

Late China (Three different eras, in my view; Late Ming to Early Qing, High Qing, Late Qing from the Opium Wars, the Taiping Rebellion, to the last emperor)

World War I (I'd prefer two options; one for the European Front, the other for the Middle Eastern front)

Westeros Total War (to hell with that LOTR kiddie stuff. There's actually a mod for M2TW set in Westeros but it's in its early stages)

Total War: Norths Vs South; American Civil War; although basically that'd be a mod for Empire.

Total War: Middle Kingdom; a Sangokushi Wei/Wu/Han battle for control of China.

Alternatively, a game that blends Europa Universalis turn-based mode with Total War battle mode. Now THAT would rock. Especially if it covered the incredible diversity of nations and time periods. The only problem is you would need a dozen DVDs for install, and a 1TB Total War-dedicated hard drive to store it all. Oh, and you would need to spend something like 1000 hours to finish a play through. People would DIE before finishing the damned game.

Y'know, Sangokushi is the Japanese name though ... what's the actual Chinese name? (I presume it's the same characters but not sure of the pronunciation)

A WWI game where you can easily transfer between campaign map and RT like with a zoom-scroll function or something. That way you can set up defences and stuff and use them only when another faction has moved units into their territory. I know the End Turn button is a staple but get rid of that and istead armies move all the time at a set pace with like planes and boats and trains moving faster than infantry. Ordering battalions to make trench lines and defending them would help define countries boarders. I think a WWI game would be awesome as it was the first true "Total War".

I thinking... why not just go the whole hog and call it 'Das Reich: Absoluter Krieg' to run from the political tensions as a result of the Crimean War right through the Wars of German Unification.

That was their foray into console RTS, though it didn't have that hybrid gameplay of TBS/RTT that is the Total War standard.

I'm with you on the Chinese & Hellenic, though Mesopotamian is an interesting one, even if I don't see it being that popular, largely because not enough is known about it (or that might just be me).

Sanguozhi. Sangokushi is actually quite similar to the Cantonese pronunciation Samgwokjin (I never know how to romanise Cantonese words...).

Further to my last post:

Thirty Years War... enough cross-Europe variation, historical figures and historical scenarios that can be played as standalone battles, it'd be a pretty good era to do. Surprised no-one's mentioned it. Go Gustavus!

As everyone's said, obviously the safe (and perfectly valid) option would be Rome 2.

One the slightly more wishful thinking side, it would be nice if they made a Romance of the Three Kingdoms era Total War. Or branching out a bit, an official LOTR Total War would be amazing.

Dammit, this thread has made me go and install Medieval 2 The Third Age again.
