Nickelback Hate

I've heard a lot of people declaring how terrible Nickelback is, and I never got it. I enjoy their music. They're certainly not the best ever, but I find it good enough to listen to once in a while.

Some people simply call them unoriginal, which I see, but it doesn't make them bad. There are plenty of unoriginal bands that are considered much better than Nickelback.

I suppose their genre is another main complaint, that they have a type of rock that a lot of people simply hate to death. My response to that is: Hate the genre, not the band. Some people may not like what Nickelback does, but I'll say this much about it: They do it well. They've got a good singer, the rest of the band is certainly competent enough to play their songs well, their songs generally have decent lyrics, and I simply can't see where all this hate comes from.

So, could someone explain all this hate to me? Because I simply don't get it.

I love Nickelback, I don't think they're particularily talented or prolific. They are fun, loud and fast. and they've got this whole American Dream thing down.

Also the lyrics to "something in your mouth" are pants-on-head-retardley awesome.

For me, it was because in Britain, a sofa company (I think it might have been DFS) used "Rockstar" in their adverts. After hearing a song you didn't like to begin with being played ad nauseum throughout the day will annoy you after a while.

OT - I like How You Remind Me. And the video to Rock Star. Never really bothered with the rest of their stuff but I can't really understand the hatred they get. Just like... Well... Watch this site for a bit, Twilight, Justin Beiber (who noone has EVER explained to me who he is or why they hate him. In fact, I ONLY know him through the people on this site who are obsessed with him), hell, I'm thinking Tyra Banks is looking like a likly candidate to join the pantheon.

Dude, I'm pretty sure there's a lot of people who like Nickelback and don't post on the Escapist. I am not one of them, as I both post on the Escapist and hate Nickelback. It's mostly the lyrics. "If Everyone Cared" is the smarmiest, sappiest, most gut-wrenchingly happy song I've ever heard. Here's the chorus, if memory serves: (and please don't ask me why I know this. I also know that the man who gives Hurley his electronic wheel chair in the Lost season 1 finale also played a priest in an early Charlie flashback episode. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I KNOW EITHER OF THOSE THINGS.)

But really, what I don't understand is why you would be so bothered or curious enough to start a thread about it. You like Nickelback. So tonnes of people don't? fuck 'em, just listen to whatever you want.

The reason I started this thread is that I wanted to understand the hatred for them. There has to be some reason that people state that they're one of the worst bands ever when they're clearly not THAT bad.
Plus, no one has really been able to legitimately convince me that someone can hate Nickelback for their reasons. I'm getting much better points and I'm able to see the logic behind the hate much better this way.

For the record, "All the right reasons" is a fucking awesome album. Apart from "Dark Horse" the rest are so-so. I'm not a massive fan of the more radio friendly hits but I'm not stupid enough to hate Nickelback with a passion armed only with a vague knowledge of their most popular and over-played singles and the opinions of people from the Internet.

Actually, "Nickel" is the proper spelling for the Canadian 5 cent coin. I thought it was the same spelling for its American counterpart, seeing as the coin was named after the element. Strange.

I do like some of their stuff, like that song they did for spiderman, but most of it is pure garbage. I don't really hate them, but I do resent them for being Canadian; There are many Canadian rock bands who deserve more attention than these hacks have received.

I'd make the argument that Nickelback are part of the crap-copycat wave rather than being the guys that started it.

Cause Foo Fighters had the gravelly voice before them!

I listened to a song of theirs on my friend's ipod in high school and really enjoyed it. I then listened to several more of their songs only to discover they all sounded more or less the same with little variation. I stopped caring after that.

They're not the worst band in the world or anything, Brokencyde wins that no contest, but they're just boring. Between people bringing up topics like this, I honestly forget they exist.

Well I just hate the whole "whiny" movement that surrounds them. On 2/3 of their songs, the leader sounds like he's being constantly punched in the gut with his low whines.

That and they are schizophrenic: can't decide between slow or fast songs or if they want to be sappy or irreverent. All their slow songs are utterly horrible, the only song I do like by them is one of their faster, irreverent ones, I believe it's called "Animals".
