so much salt. i find it funny that you're hating on Nintendos paid online service when we hardly even know anything about it yet.
You seem to believe that keeping consumers in the dark is a shield from criticism, it isn't.
even if they told us now when their VC service was starting people would just be whinging that it's too far away.

hell people were bitching and moaning about not knowing when ARMS & Splatoon 2 were coming out as if we were in some kind of massive drought on the Switch at the moment. why did we need to know that information last month? last month everyone was too busy playing Zelda and some people still are playing it (myself included), and just now when Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is just about to come out, they not only give us release dates for ARMS & Splatoon 2, but a whole bunch of other release dates as well including May release dates for both Minecraft & Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers.

sure it'd be better if there was a big game coming out every single week, but it's not like we're in a drought at the moment. there are plenty of smaller games to keep people occupied while they wait for the next big game and hell, ARMS is only coming out a month and a half after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 is literally a month after that. then we've still got things like Fire Emblem Warriors and Mario Odyssey for the years end. and that's not even counting stuff that Nintendo will announce at E3 either. ARMS even comes out on the last day of E3 i guess as a type of final celebration of that week for Nintendo.

i guess my point in a nutshell is, people are just way too impatient. it's not like you need a new big release game every week or anything. i sure as hell don't hell my wallet is barely able to survive as it is already with the amount of shit that gets put out. if something big came out every week i'd just get sad cause i wouldn't come close to being able to afford it all.

I am getting there too. Reggie says they know there is lots of demand and then they discontinue it. They are just enabling scalpers and they don't give a shit about consumers who really want one.
there have been plenty of restocks of the NES Mini console. it's not Nintendo's fault if you didn't grab one at any of those times. seems like a lot of people on the internet just want to take the easy way out and put all the blame on Scalpers while taking absolutely no responsibility for themselves

Well, we do know one thing, to access the paid online service I would need to buy a Switch, and for me it's too expensive to be justified. There is another product that I could buy that is much cheaper, but Nintendo have chosen to discontinue it even though there is clearly a huge demand from consumers.
so if you're not buying a Switch that's not really an issue for you then is it?

i mean you literally can already buy all those NES games through the Wii and Wii U Virtual Consoles
I don't have a Wii or a Wii U.

To summarise my position, I wanted to buy the classic mini, but have been unable to buy it so far because of stock shortages. I've waited patiently for Nintendo to make more stock to satisfy demand, but now they've discontinued the product despite the proven demand. I believe the reason behind this is to try to push people into buying the Switch, a much more expensive product, since the retro game online service thing was one of the selling points for the Switch. I am annoyed, because I have no intentions of buying a Switch.

How are you being forced to buy anything?

Outside of just buying the original console, you can just buy a 3DS, Wii or Wii U for about 1/3-1/4 of the price.

So where are you getting this paranoid delusion that this is all just a conspiracy to force you to buy a Switch?

and pay for their stupid online thing where you only get access to a retro game for a month.
You mean.. The online service that's literally a portion of the price of Xbox Live and PS+? And literally all because it doesn't attach "free" gifts that you neither need nor want.

Basic economics dictates that the online service for the Switch is the best one out of any console. Simply because of the money that you're not spending. (Assuming you only pay for one at a time)

So stop whining. This definitely didn't warrant its own thread.
The news that the Classic Mini NES is being discontinued doesn't warrant a new thread? There's plenty of articles about this. Why shouldn't it be discussed here?

And why shouldn't people speculate over the reason why this product is discontinued? I think it's a reasonable theory that a lower priced product is being discontinued in favour of a higher priced product, as there is a certain overlap in the product function.

Who's problems that? Yours or Nintendo's?

Wii's are extremely cheap if you're that desperate to play NES Virtual Console games

It is interesting to speculate why Nintendo would discontinue a popular product that is still in demand, that would still sell and make money. Saying "go buy a Wii" doesn't add anything.

Out of interest, does the wii have nes games preloaded or must they be bought seperately?

Bought separately at $5 each. However, it's probably a better experience because you don't need to sit a couple of feet from the console to have access to all it's functions AND the controllers are wireless as they connect through the Wii Remote (or just use the Wii Remote sideways for NES games).

Where can you buy a Wii U for 1/3 or 1/4 of the price of a Switch, I haven't seen any in my local stores (Wal Mart, Target, Kmart, Best Buy, Gamestop) since last fall. When they were there, they were still $300. A quick look at Amazon shows the lowest price at $288.93 (Refurbished). Lowest used price, $250. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=wii+u

Thread whining should be against the TOS.

Part of me is pissed at Nintendo for underestimating the demand but the other part of thinks a lot people got caught up in the hype since Jimstearling made a video bitching about the cost f the NES mini, then another video bragging about how he modded his NES Mini to play other NES Gams that Nintendo doesn't have the license too.

I lucked out and got one though.

Not really you can get a Wii or Wii U and just buy those old NES Games. Not to mention you can mod those devices if you want to go the Non Legit route. The value of the NES Mini is that, it output these games in HD with multiple preferences, it has like Zero boot time compared to modern consoles, and the controller is High Quality.

Your argument is that discontinuing the NES Classic isn't a step to push people towards the Switch because people can buy a Wii or a Wii U which are also discontinued products. You see, people upset that they can no longer buy an NES Classic wanted to buy it new and good luck buying either a Wii or a Wii U new unless you plan to spend as much as you would on a Switch.

The Switch doesn't have any NES Games how woud this push people to get the Switch. Also the Wii is like 50 bucks on Craigslist and has a better Library then the Wii U or Switch.

I read that Nintendo told people that the VC would be discussed more at E3 so NES games are coming. Is it new for $50 or did you just gloss over the new thing?

Let me explain a little more. Nintendo would not discontinue the NES Classic to push people to buy a used Wii or Wii U.

If you can find a new Wii (not a Wii mini which can't access the Wii Shop Channel) then it will likely be very expensive. I did say new which is something neither you nor kilenem saw. 'Buy a used console' is not a defense against 'Nintendo discontinued the NES Classic to push people towards the Switch'.

Where did you hear it was discontinued? The Wii is 50 bucks used on craiglist. Why are consumers so stupid that they would buy the new thing that is a Incremental upgrade with less features then the previous product. Please imagine that last sentence in sarcasm because I own a 3DS, Wii U and a Switch. Clearly Zelda Botw was made to use the Wii U's gamepad because Wind Waker HD and Twilight princess HD use that gamepad and at a previous E3 they show the gamepad being used with Botw. Clearly Nintendo removed the touch pad functionality so the Wii U didn't have the better version but they didn't completely optimize the Switch's version to run better then the Wii U's version.

Sorry for the tangent but basically people don't have to buy the new thing because they're new when you can get a old product for a cheaper price, that has more functionality.

The Wii doesn't output in HD, and if you bought a WiiU for those old NES games you'd still have to buy the NES games separately, so it's still the much more expensive option compared to the NES mini.

Ok well Nintendo's intent with discontinuing the NES Classic (to not compete against itself and to push people towards their newest console) and people's ability to buy a used console are not related and both could be true at the same time.

You can buy Wii up scaling devices for 10 bucks and there other devices that upscale old consoles to HD but the Nes mini is HD out of the Box.

Yes buying games would be more expensive but you get to Choose which games you get. There are some key games missing from the Nes Mini line up probably due to licensing issues. I'm surprised they got Konami to put games on the thing. Also some of these games have updates, I own a NES Mini but if I want to play Super Mario bros, Super Mario bros 2, Super Mario Bros 3 or te Lost levels. I grab super Mario allstars for Wii. Although some people want the authentic 8 bit experience.

I think the NES mini is nice for 60 bucks but instead of paying scalper prices on Ebay, you are better off getting a Wii buying a HDMI upscaller, and just Cherry picking what games you want.

I have no idea how well those up-scaling devices work, but I guess it doesn't matter as much for old NES games.

But still, the NES Mini is $60 for everything new (or it would have been if Nintendo kept making it). If you got the Wii you'd pay at least $50 for a used console, plus $10 for the up-scaling device, and then pay another $5 for every game that you want, and if you actually wanted even 1/3 of the games that are on the NES mini then that's another $50 at least.

You're still paying at least twice as much for less content, and used hardware. That's not a comparatively great deal.
