Bought separately at $5 each. However, it's probably a better experience because you don't need to sit a couple of feet from the console to have access to all it's functions AND the controllers are wireless as they connect through the Wii Remote (or just use the Wii Remote sideways for NES games).
That seems steep for roms.

I kinda figured the things would be a brief little gadget from the get-go, but I can only imagine how hyped the scalpers are getting over this news. Though it just doubles down on the whole "just get a Pi" thing, now that the general public has been exposed to the idea of a tiny box that plays retro games.

so much salt. i find it funny that you're hating on Nintendos paid online service when we hardly even know anything about it yet.
I mean the idea of a mandatory subscription for online play is entirely hateable on principal alone, the potential wonkiness of whatever garnishes they throw in is just a bonus.

Not really you can get a Wii or Wii U and just buy those old NES Games.
Your argument is that discontinuing the NES Classic isn't a step to push people towards the Switch because people can buy a Wii or a Wii U which are also discontinued products. You see, people upset that they can no longer buy an NES Classic wanted to buy it new and good luck buying either a Wii or a Wii U new unless you plan to spend as much as you would on a Switch.
The Switch doesn't have any NES Games. Also the Wii is like 50 bucks on Craigslist and has a better Library then the Wii U or Switch.
I read that Nintendo told people that the VC would be discussed more at E3 so NES games are coming. Is it new for $50 or did you just gloss over the new thing?

Let me explain a little more. Nintendo would not discontinue the NES Classic to push people to buy a used Wii or Wii U.
Where did you hear it was discontinued? The Wii is 50 bucks used on craiglist. Why are consumers so stupid that they would buy the new thing that is a Incremental upgrade with less features then the previous product. Please imagine that last sentence in sarcasm because I own a 3DS, Wii U and a Switch. Clearly Zelda Botw was made to use the Wii U's gamepad because Wind Waker HD and Twilight princess HD use that gamepad and at a previous E3 they show the gamepad being used with Botw. Clearly Nintendo removed the touch pad functionality so the Wii U didn't have the better version but they didn't completely optimize the Switch's version to run better then the Wii U's version.

Sorry for the tangent but basically people don't have to buy the new thing because they're new when you can get a old product for a cheaper price, that has more functionality.
Ok well Nintendo's intent with discontinuing the NES Classic (to not compete against itself and to push people towards their newest console) and people's ability to buy a used console are not related and both could be true at the same time.
I think that is speculative again because the Switch can't play Nes games, the 3DS, wii and Wii U can.
Do you think that the Switch will not get the VC or that the Switch VC will not have NES games?

Not really you can get a Wii or Wii U and just buy those old NES Games. Not to mention you can mod those devices if you want to go the Non Legit route. The value of the NES Mini is that, it output these games in HD with multiple preferences, it has like Zero boot time compared to modern consoles, and the controller is High Quality.
The Wii doesn't output in HD, and if you bought a WiiU for those old NES games you'd still have to buy the NES games separately, so it's still the much more expensive option compared to the NES mini.
You can buy Wii up scaling devices for 10 bucks and there other devices that upscale old consoles to HD but the Nes mini is HD out of the Box.

Yes buying games would be more expensive but you get to Choose which games you get. There are some key games missing from the Nes Mini line up probably due to licensing issues. I'm surprised they got Konami to put games on the thing. Also some of these games have updates, I own a NES Mini but if I want to play Super Mario bros, Super Mario bros 2, Super Mario Bros 3 or te Lost levels. I grab super Mario allstars for Wii. Although some people want the authentic 8 bit experience.

I think the NES mini is nice for 60 bucks but instead of paying scalper prices on Ebay, you are better off getting a Wii buying a HDMI upscaller, and just Cherry picking what games you want.
I have no idea how well those up-scaling devices work, but I guess it doesn't matter as much for old NES games.

But still, the NES Mini is $60 for everything new (or it would have been if Nintendo kept making it). If you got the Wii you'd pay at least $50 for a used console, plus $10 for the up-scaling device, and then pay another $5 for every game that you want, and if you actually wanted even 1/3 of the games that are on the NES mini then that's another $50 at least.

You're still paying at least twice as much for less content, and used hardware. That's not a comparatively great deal.
Sure but the Wii can also play Wii games and if you pick up an older one, Gamecube games. Further the Wii Shop Channel isn't limited to NES games, you can get games from the SNES, N64, Genesis (I think) and more.

Twice as much for hardware that does more then play 30 Nes games.

Knowing Nintendo its going to be a second before we get and my bet is that it will be E3 and they will slowly role out the games instead dumping them all at one time. If you are desperate to play NES games but want to get them legit go buy a 3ds, WiiU or Wii.

..and it's possible that Nintendo discontinued the NES Classic because when they launch the VC on Switch, they don't want to compete against the NES Classic and would rather you buy those games on the Switch.

It seems like it was aimed at enriching scalpers. Anyway, I am not trying to sell you anything, just saying that your interest in the games themselves will determine which (if any) is the better value.

Yeah, yeah. Nintendo gonna Nintendo. Did you really expect otherwise?

Ninty giving a giant 'fuck you' to their fans and consumers is nothing new nor surprising. They built an empire on screwing people over, going all the way back to the 80's. They've become THE shit-stains of the industry who do more to abuse their fans than EA, Activision, Square-Enix, Capcom, and Konami. And, as long as the ass-hats in charge remain in charge, I don't see that changing any time soon.

I mean, look at the skivviness. Other publishers lock content behind piece-meal DLC. That was bad enough. But Ninty, being Ninty, couldn't just settle for adopting that shitty business model. No, they had to up the bullshit, so they locked content behind piece-meal DLC in the form of limited number physical items.

That's just disgusting. Then they made it even fucking worse by purposefully limiting unit numbers by region.

Fuck you Nintendo.

Sure, but if I ever wanted a Wii I could have gotten one at any point in the last 10 years. The fact that I don't have one means I don't really care about all the other stuff it can do, so that's really not a selling point to me, nor is it a selling point to anyone who wanted an NES mini and can no longer get one.

Getting a Nintendo Wii to play these games would mean dropping more money on something whose only benefit is that I can then buy more things for it, things that I have thus far not wanted.

well that's your problem if you refuse to ever buy a Wii. you can either keep being salty about missing out on an NES Mini OR you could buy an extremely cheap 2nd hand Wii from somewhere and then purchase and download these NES games you seem to be craving alot.

A quick check on Amazon.com and Gamestop.com (both places where you can be assured that the console is in working condition and you won't get shot/stabbed/mugged/murdered/abducted) shows that the cheapest used Wii is $80 American, not what I'd call extremely cheap for a used console now two (Nintendo) generations old. Add the $80 to the $10 upscaler and the tax/shipping charges and you're $100 in before you even get your first game. And if someone wanted all of the games on the NES mini that's another $150, bringing the total up to (roughly) $250.
Why potentially invest two hundred and fifty dollars when another hundred or so would buy you a brand new, current, console where?

i've seen people sell Wii consoles for like $20 Australian in facebook groups and such.

hell you could probably even pick one up from EB for like $50 Australian if you wanted to

You are telling me you only wanted 30 games that you couldn't pick out, a controller that was super short that required you to play two feet in front of the TV and a device that can't have more games added to it. Im only focusing on the negatives but they're pretty huge negatives.

I prefered a SNES Classic Mini over an NES, SNES has pretty much the same games on the NES but vastly improved.

I mean why play NES Metroid when SNES Super Metroid is superior?
Why Play Super Metroid when Metroid Prime is superior?

(yes i went there.)
I liked MP until I realized I needed to scan everything and the combat was horrible. Sad as it has great atmosphere.

you don't need to scan everything though. that stuff is there if you want to scan it but you don't HAVE to scan everything to progress through the game. it's mainly there for people who want to learn about the lore and backstory of the game since there's barely any cutscenes throughout the game.

..and it's possible that Nintendo discontinued the NES Classic because when they launch the VC on Switch, they don't want to compete against the NES Classic and would rather you buy those games on the Switch.
We have a fire emblem game coming out for 3DS,and the Switch yet most fire emblem fans are going to get both.
