If you can still find it (and enjoy rhythm games), Elite Beat agents is excellent.
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story plays well is has a hilarious script.
The Phoenix Wright games are awesome as well.
And Pokemon is still a great series (especially with HeartGold and SoulSilver just released).

Advance Wars
Phoenix Wright
Elite Beat Agents
Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! (you'd need to import both of those)
Professor Layton

All amazing series that deserve to be in every DS owner's collection.

You kidding? The DS has one of the best libraries of games out there. Hell, its the best since the PS2.

Get all the Castlevania games first.

Very much agree with the DS library being one of the best out there.

I would add:
Age of Empires: Age of Kings
Zookeeper!!!
Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes

It even has horror titles.
Wonder at the squishy feel of zombies by playing Touch the Dead
Tour your future home when the white coats finally come to take you away with Dementium: The Ward
Pretend I said something witty about Theresia

Phoenix Wright, Elite Beat Agents, Your choice of Pokemon, Kirby Super Star Ultra, and New Super Mario Bros.

Special note for Elite Beat Agents: Don't even try playing it on public transportation past Cruisin Difficulty. You will find yourself being shaken off mark by the bus itself.

The pokemon games I guess... Though I haven't played them in a while, I remember D/P being quite touch screen heavy.

Good Luck on your Deployment.
Believe it or not, when I was deployed to Vietnam, in the 60's, I carried a small portable Chess Game. But I've always been a Gamer and I've played thousands of games. I own over 50 DS Games. Played everyone mentioned so far, but highly recommend "Clubhouse Games". You can play it over and over forever. It contains 20 classic games like; Chess, Solitaire, Backgammon, Dominoes, etc. Never gets old.

If the drumhasn't been beat enough.
POKEMON HG/SS
IF you're into that sort of thing. Kirby Super Star Ultra and Super Mario 64 DS are pretty good too.

Pick just about any RPG and you're bound to have a winner.

The Professor Layton games are kickass as well. Rythym Heaven is a good bit of fun. I've heard good things about Warioware DIY, too...

You know what? Just hit up Metacritic.

There are so many good games for the DS it is difficult to list them all. But for an easy guide I'll recommend my personal, bigtime favorites...

Bowsers Inside Story
The World Ends With You
Elite Beat Agents
Kirby Super Star Ultra
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
Chrono Trigger DS

All of those are excellent titles that'll keep you good and busy for a good while.

Tons of games to suggest but a few 'Essentials':

Elite Beat Agents
Pokemon HG/SS
Final Fantasy 12: Revenant Wings
Phantasy Star 0 (not very touch screen heavy, but a fantastic RPG)
Final Fantasy 4

Although, if RPGs are not your thing, most of my list is invalid.
