Nintendo sees skyward sales on Black Friday

Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword helped Nintendo to a successful kickoff of the holiday sales season.

The new Nintendo 3DS game, Super Mario 3D Land, which landed in stores Nov. 11, has become the fastest selling portable Mario game in company history, selling more than 500,000 units since launch, says Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.

Meanwhile, the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, released for the Nintendo Wii on Sunday, Nov. 20, has sold 535,000 copies since its U.S. launch, making it hte fastest-selling Zelda game ever, he says.

These strong new releases also drove sales of Nintendo 3DS and Wii systems, Fils-Aime says. Last week's 3DS sales tripled (by 325%) compared to sales the week of Nov. 6, the week before Super Mario 3D Land debuted; the week of its debut, sales rose 49% over the previous week.

The Nintendo Wii had its biggest Black Friday ever more with than 500,000 units sold just during Black Friday and the pre-Black openings at some stores, he says.

Reggie's said 3DS has outsold in 8 months the first 12 months of DS. Assuming what he says is correct and mixing NPD with NoA's internal tracking system.

DS Nov 04 - Oct 05: 2370k
3DS Mar 11 - Oct 11: 1690k
3DS in November until Black Friday >680k

Do you know what Market Saturation is?

Do you know how many Wiis have been sold since it was first released?

It's not hard to sell a console and its games during holidays when you have no direct competition. (DS)

Man, numbers like that would get you fired if you had released a game for the PS3/360. L.A. Noire has sold roughly 1.87 million copies on the Xbox 360 (800,000 in the first week) and roughly 1.9 million on the PS3 (760,000 in the first week) and Team Bondi was still closed down because they couldn't get any more work.

Oh, but good for Nintendo. If I had a Wii and didn't have a massive back-log of games to work through, I might have cared about Skyward Sword.

This. Wiis aren't selling because pretty much everyone on the planet already has one.

EDIT: I also didn't read the first line, and I also didn't read the other posts scolding the above poster for also not reading the first line.

The even more amusing thing is 500k in a single day is actually pretty insanely good, even moreso when you consider the amount of Wiis currently sold in the US. Reggie even says that it's the best ever BF for the Wii.

on the subject of not reading the first line I think I should change the title to MEGADOOMEDXINFINTY to make it very clear that it's a joke title haha

Key note, it's a first party game. All revenue is directly acquired by the Big N themselves.

Something just come to light.

The Skyward Sword team project was incredibly small [http://www.zeldainformer.com/2011/11/has-nintendo-been-dropping-the-ball-for-years-the-downtreading-of-nintendos-2011.html]

Yeah, Nintendo will be fine. They need to call it quits on the handheld market after the 3DS though. It's time for them to man up and release handheld games on 3rd party platforms, I'm sorry to say.

As long as they can woo enough good developers over to the WeeOOuuu, they'll kick butt.

Good for the 3ds. Nintendo should realize that t should be used to bring back hardcore gamers Instead of casual gamers

That's because Wii games don't have $1,000,000,000 budgets, of which %95 is blown on trying to create "realism" that also lags the game and creates excessive load times.

OT: Good for them. Since we don't have Black Friday here, I'll have to wait a while longer on getting Skyward Sword myself, but I will get it eventually. Possibly after I finish Twilight Princess...won't be able to play it after Skyward Sword, and I really do want to see its ending first-hand.

Yay! Nintendo is doomed! Now the people that work there will lose their jobs and possibly be forced to live on the streets or have their family starve to death! Oh...wait...

Seriously? Nintendo has been in the hand-held market for ages now. Why would they suddenly abandon that, especially when technology is getting better and allowing them to put more power into smaller pieces of hardware.

They have much more to gain by continuing to make their own platforms AND releasing games for said platforms, than by releasing games for their competitor's platforms.

Because if not true than handheld device singularity and brand/lifestyle identity is an issue. Nintendo can't create The Mac Existance for you. sony and MS CAN.

Remember the ridiculously small team with Skyward Sword, largest at Nintendo ever... for a flagship title no less.

You should probably get yourself one of these-

-and not jump to conclusions. You know what they say about assuming things.

OT: Yeah, the release date of the 3DS was a pretty terrible decision. Although now that they have a decent lineup, sales'll definitely pick up. Hell, I might even get one if I have the money after the Steam Christmas sale.

Great, now Nintendo just needs to conquer the Escapist.

The Skyrim to Skyward Sword topic ratio is sickening.

The skies are bright under the Zelda side, as well. And with less frostbite, ha ha ha.
