Nintendo's next console will debut at E3 in June, moving the maker of Mario and Zelda into the HD era. The news, first reported by Game Informer today, confirms rumors that have been swirling for months in the wake of slowing game releases from Nintendo.

Furthermore, we've heard that the machine will be more powerful than current-gen systems, meaning Nintendo, currently backing a Wii that is weaker in horsepower than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, will be showing a new console that is more powerful than those current competitors.

We've asked Nintendo for comment and will let you know if they shock us and spill the beans. Update: Nintendo responded to our inquiry with a standard "Nintendo does not comment on rumor or speculation".

E3 kicks off on June 7, though Nintendo's E3 press conference may occur the day before, if tradition holds.

If this is true then I guess their reasoning is "we're literally rolling in money now, thanks to the Wii, and can afford the risks of making and selling a very powerful and expensive machine"

I'll believe it when I see it.

If it's a new console based around motion controls though, it can go straight to hell.

One would expect as much, the PS3 and 360 are old systems, so if they developed a new one now it would have to be more powerful..even with nintendo making it.

Considering how old the tech in the Xbox 360 and PS3 is, it's really not that hard to make a machine that's more powerful than them.

Calling Bullshit on this.

The wii was sucessful because of how cheap it was.
You also have to realize the Wii, while selling the most, has one of the lowest console to game attach rates. Most people don't use their wii much.

I'm not jealous at all that my thread on this from 2 minutes earlier got ignored...

Anyway, I am thinking they are either holding back Skyward Sword for this new console or they will do kind of the same thing they did with Twilight Princess.

So the virtual dogs and transvestite teens with 10 foot swords will look a bit better than 4 or 5 colored blocks with eyes?? Oh boy....

It would make sense.

Nintendo already owns most of the casual market and the handheld market.

The wii is still fine as a low-end entry level machine, so the only way to expand is to take the enthousiast segment away from Sony and M$.

I'd rather support Nintendo than Sony or Microsoft - so if it's affordable, and will get developers making fun games on it consider my interest piqued.

More powerful than 5-year-old hardware, eh? That's... something.

If they want to make it even in the slightest bit appealing (to myself, and quite a few others I imagine), they'll have to actually pull their dicks out when it comes to third-party support, since they obviously can't be relied upon to extend to anything beyond Mario/Zelda/Pokemon.

Excuse my pessimism; its just that I bought a Wii.

If this is true, then it should be interesting to see which direction Nintendo heads. Will they still try to pass off implements like motion control or 3D, or will they opt for a more traditional approach?

Personally I hope for the latter. Stuff like motion control is a fun little excursion, but the standard analogue stick and button layout is still better for precision and playing for long sessions.

Why?
Motion Controls work great.
Stop being so anti-new stuff.
I'm not anti-new stuff. I just hate motion controls. They're stupid and gimmicky and never work properly.
I like to play games as a form of relaxation. I can't relax by flailing my body around in front of a camera.

Then you're just jumping on the bandwagon of hate I'd say and not really played a Wii then.
They're not stupid nor are.. Okay, they might be gimmicky but is that a bad thing?
How are you flailning your arms exactly? I play my wii and I have never flailed my arms around. Not once.
I'm not jumping on any bandwagon. I was excited for the Wii when it first came out but was horribly disappointed by it. There were no games I enjoyed for it aside from Metroid Prime and it was all gimmicky shovelware bullshit. The only other games available were the flailing type.

I played it extensively trying to find something worth a shit on it and the only redeemable quality was the virtual console but playing old games on a new console shouldn't count considering I still have the old consoles.

And yes, I play games to relax and to unwind or to just be immersed into something else.
Shit motion control doesn't do that for me.
